The 2014 NFL regular season has been one of the best in quite some time. With three games remaining, there are twelve teams in the mix for a playoff berth in the AFC. The NFC doesn’t have as many playoff contenders, but the winner of the NFC South will potentially finish with a record of 8-8 or worse. Could the NFC South champion actually go on to win the Super Bowl?

Some fans and even players will be demanding that the playoff format be changed because there will be teams with better records missing out on the postseason, but I think that we should hold up on those conversations for a second. The only other time in the modern era that a team has hosted a playoff game with a record under .500 was the 2010 Seattle Seahawks (7-9) who went on to beat the New Orleans Saints in the wild card round.

Here are the teams that I project to make the 2014 postseason:

Teams to represent AFC:

1 New England 12-4

2 Denver 12-4

3 Indianapolis 12-4

4 Cincinnati 10-5-1

5/WC1 San Diego 10-6

6/WC2 Baltimore 10-6

Teams to represent NFC:

1 Green Bay 13-3

2 Philadelphia 12-4

3 Seattle 11-5

4 Atlanta 7-9

5/WC1 Arizona 11-5

6/WC2 Detroit 11-5
