Why Brandon Scherff is a perfect fit for New York Giants

With the New York Giants holding the ninth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, there are certainly a lot of options to consider. While names like Vic Beasely, Landon Collins and Shaq Thompson have all been thrown around, the offensive line is still the chief priority for Big Blue.

This year, the Dallas Cowboys have shown the NFC East the blueprint to reloading. Over four years, Dallas rebuilt the offensive line and the resurgent group has played an invaluable part in the team’s postseason run. This is something the Giants can learn from.

Anyone that watched the Giants in 2014 knows that while the offensive line was improved from 2013’s horror show, the group could still use a lot of improvement.

Enter Brandon Scherff.

The man labeled as a “football freak” by his teammates is the ideal first round fit for the New York Giants.

The 6-foot-5, 320 pound senior is a hard worker, and he would provide the offensive line with immediate help. CBS Sports has him ranked as the best offensive tackle. Plain and simple, this kid is an absolute monster.

A fear that some Giants fans might have is that he comes from a school, Iowa, that isn’t exactly a big name. Central Michigan’s Eric Fisher went first overall back in 2012, and he’s had an incredibly disappointing season.

Yes, Iowa isn’t Alabama, but it’s a Big Ten school, and Scherff dominated most of the competition during his senior year.

It’s not like Scherff was playing against teams like Georgia State and SMU every week.

He was like a short-order cook thanks to all the pancake blocks he had. The game against Ohio State was probably Scherff’s most impressive of the year as he laid out defenders, and on one play he even drove a defensive player out of bounds into the sidelines, a la The Blind Side.

More from New York Giants

One great thing about Scherff are his instincts. He was skilled at picking up blitzes, and he’s just everything you look for in an offensive lineman. Another reason why he’s the perfect fit for the Giants is what it would do to the offensive line. Aside from drastically improving the group, Scherff’s arrival would most likely lead to a shuffling of the group for the better.

Justin Pugh would likely move to left guard, while Weston Richburg would move back to center, which is his natural position. A group of (from left to right) Will Beatty, Justin Pugh, Weston Richburg, Geoff Schwartz and Scherff would be stellar. The Hawkeyes’ standout is so versatile and talented that he will excel anywhere, even if the Giants want to move Scherff to guard and keep Pugh at tackle.

NFL.com’s Mike Mayock has even compared Brandon Scherff to Dallas’ rookie standout Zack Martin, as well as Cleveland’s superb rookie Joel Bitonio.

“(Scherff is) a better prospect than Bryan Bulaga and Riley Reiff,” said an AFC East scouting director. Both Bulaga and Reiff attended Iowa, and both players were selected in the first round.

Mayock also alluded to the fact that if an offensive lineman is from Iowa, they’re likely well-coached. That would be a plus, considering how many times Giants offensive linemen were penalized in 2014.

If the Giants do in fact draft Scherff, the offensive line will be set for years to come thanks to their young nucleus. It’s not the sexiest pick, but it’s the most sensible and the best for the long haul. If Scherff falls to the ninth spot, I expect the Giants to select him. It might draw some ire from fans, but before you cancel your season tickets, look at what Zack Martin has done for Dallas.

I still project the Giants to draft a linebacker, albeit in the second round.
