Philadelphia Eagles: Is Nick Foles on the way out?

The Philadelphia Eagles’ offseason is underway, and for their head coach Chip Kelly it is also his first season controlling personnel for the Eagles, which means Nick Foles could be out in favor of a certain quarterback he coached in college.

It is no secret that Kelly needs certain type players to effectively run his offense, as we have seen the Eagles have added players like Darren Sproles, and Jordan Matthews who figured to work well in Kelly’s system.

Since Kelly has been in the NFL he has had three starting QB play for him in Michael Vick, Nick Foles, and Mark Sanchez. The QB that probably would have fit Kelly’s system the best would have been Vick, but unfortunately for both of them, Vick had already lost a step by the time Kelly was the coach in Philadelphia.

Kelly has shown already that his system can make quarterbacks better, and there is no better example than what Foles did in his first year with Kelly. In 2013, Foles was able to have one of the most efficient seasons in NFL history. Foles was able to throw for 2,891 yards with 27 TD to just an amazing 2 INT in 13 games.

It was Kelly’s first season in the NFL after making the transition from a very successful tenure at Oregon, and he had no problem with the NFL, as the Eagles won the NFC East, and hosted a playoff game in 2013.

2014 was a bit more of a challenge for Foles as he attempted to replicate the fantastic 2013 season. Foles was only able to play in eight games for the Eagles before he suffered a season-ending broken collarbone injury. Prior to the season-ending injury, Foles had 13 TD to 10 INT, as it was impossible to expect a season like 2013, 2014 was a bit of a disappointment from Foles.

After the injury to Foles, it was Sanchez who was thrown into the starting job, and after years of ineffective play in New York with the Jets, Kelly seemed to get more production out of Sanchez than many Jets fans felt was possible.

Sanchez would play in nine games for the Eagles in 2014, throwing for 2,418 yards which almost matched his yards passing that he had with the Jets in 2012. He also threw for 14 TD last season, which was one more than his total in the 2012 season. Mistakes were certainly an issue for Sanchez, but for a backup QB, he played very well for the Eagles and kept them in the playoff hunt.

Now with the offseason starting in Philadelphia rumors are starting to fly about their QB situation, as with Kelly in control he may look to bring in a QB that he feels can be best-suited for his offense.

The biggest rumor surrounding the Eagles is that Kelly is going to be going hard after his former QB at Oregon in Marcus Mariota. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans are both atop the NFL Draft, and both need a QB, but if Kelly is willing to pay a steep price, Mariota can surely be gotten.

Despite playing well in his three seasons with the Eagles, Foles could very well see himself packaged with draft picks in order for the Eagles to land Mariota early in the first round.
