New York Jets, Darrelle Revis reunion not plausible

One of the biggest areas of opportunity for the New York Jets is easily with their defensive secondary. Their cornerback situation is especially terrible since they were picked apart for the majority of last season. Against the pass, they allowed an average of 234 yards per game and got burned by some of the top offenses that came their way.

The Jets don’t have any talented stars at cornerback and it’s hurting them tremendously since the NFL is a passer league and if you can’t stop it, you will lose plenty of football games. Due to this, the Jets are expected to spend some serious money come free agency and will try to lure cornerback Darrelle Revis back to the team that originally drafted him. Should the Jets expect a fun reunion back on Revis Island?

Absolutely not!

Let’s take a look at the reality of the situation. Revis is coming off his first Super Bowl victory in his career as he finally was able to be on a championship caliber team and actually get a ring to show for it. It wasn’t easy but he did what any football star would do that wants to win a championship and head to the best team that gives him the opportunity to achieve the ultimate victory. Revis was indeed a star on the Jets back when they were competitive but now they are in a rebuilding phase.

Why would Revis leave a team that just won a Super Bowl to head back to a team that is nowhere near that caliber? Let’s face it, if you want to win in the AFC East, you head to Foxborough. The Patriots are the team to beat in the division and have been so for the past 15 years. It just isn’t in the best interest for Revis to head back to the Jets considering that his bond with Rex Ryan doesn’t really matter anymore since he’s now with the Buffalo Bills; a team that is actually worse than the Jets.

The Patriots have exclusive negotiating rights until March 9 and make no mistake about it, he’s sticking with the champs and get highly compensated for it. I highly doubt he’ll even reach free agency since he Patriots know he was an instrumental part in their defensive strategies and need him for the future. If you want to be the best you must have the best. Revis is hands down one of the top cornerbacks playing today and it only makes sense that he’s with one of the best teams in the NFL.

Plus don’t also forget that history always speaks for itself. There is still some bad blood between Revis and owner Woody Johnson from all those training camp holdouts, contract problems and the fact that they had to trade Revis because he didn’t want to deal with the Jets anymore.

Even though they have a whole new regime in place to make the Jets head in a much better direction, they are nowhere near contending for at least another year or so as they get the right talent in place to compete.

Overall, while it would be incredible to get Revis back on the Jets, realistically it just isn’t going to happen. Reunions are amazing when both sides want it to happen and a common goal is in place for a positive future together.

Unfortunately for the Jets, they are on the outside looking in when it comes to landing the services of Revis ever again since the Patriots will unlikely part ways with one of their defensive centerpieces.
