Brandon Marshall Trade: Why The Colts Fit Perfectly

Why does Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall make sense for the Indianapolis Colts to acquire this offseason?

There have been quite a few trade rumors surrounding Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him end up getting dealt. He made it very clear throughout last season that he wasn’t happy with the franchise and called out his teammates multiple times throughout the course of the year.

One team that has come up as a very serious suitor for Marshall is the Indianapolis Colts, who are looking to bring in a legitimate target to play alongside of T.Y. Hilton.

Andrew Luck would be a major quarterback upgrade for Marshall, and it is scary to think about for opposing teams. Pairing Marshall with Luck, Hilton, Donte Moncrief, and potentially Reggie Wayne would make them extremely dangerous through the air once again. The Colts also signed free agent wide receiver Duron Carter earlier this offseason.

Last season with the Bears, Marshall ended up catching 61 passes for 721 yards and eight touchdowns. He dealt with ankle issues all season long, but was still able to make an impact. Put him on the Colts with Luck and the rest of the wide receivers and there aren’t many defenses that could contend with the passing attack that Indianapolis would have.

At 6’4″ with the athleticism that he still possesses and above average hands, Marshall would be an ideal pickup for the Colts. Hilton is smaller receiver that is more of a deep threat, and Marshall would add the big target that Luck needed at times last year.

Perhaps the most underrated and forgotten aspect of Marshall’s game is his leadership ability. While he did call out his teammates in the media last season, he had every right to and he was simply stating the truth. His leadership would be big for a very young Colts’ offense, and he would help add a strong presence in the locker room.

Quite a few question marks surround this move for the Colts, especially with all of the other needs that they have. Running back is the biggest need offensively, while their defense could use some major improvements.

Obviously the Colts don’t necessarily “need” another star wide receiver after being the number one passing offense last year, but Marshall would take their offense to the next level. Now that Wayne is beginning to decline quickly, the Colts need to bring in a replacement. Carter has the chance to be a very solid receiver himself, but Marshall is the type of piece that can help build young players up as well.

Marshall is 30 years old now, and he doesn’t want to waste any more time waiting on a chance to contend with the Bears. He is ready to get traded to a team like the Colts who are a piece or two away from making the Super Bowl.

If a trade did happen between the Colts and Bears to send Marshall to Indianapolis, it would be a perfect fit for the Colts.

Not only would they be receiving the final weapon that they need offensively, they would be bringing in a strong leader. It would add a completely different dynamic to the Colts’ offense, and would take them one step closer to taking the final step into the Super Bowl.

Don’t be surprised to see more rumors surrounding the Colts and Marshall this offseason. They are seriously interested in acquiring him, and Ryan Grigson is going to be very aggressive after coming so close this past season. Marshall would love a trade to the Colts, and it will be very intriguing to keep an eye on the Colts and Marshall over the next few weeks.
