Dallas Cowboys: How would Eddie Goldman fit with defense?

Florida State junior defensive tackle Eddie Goldman is a name now being thrown around with the Dallas Cowboys at the 27th overall selection of the 2015 NFL Draft.

I understand it, but after thinking about it, is defensive tackle the way to go in the first round for the Cowboys as they look to rebuild parts of their defense?

According to ESPN.com NFL Insider Todd McShay, his latest mock draft has the Cowboys selecting Goldman with that aforementioned selection at No. 27:

"“Goldman doesn’t offer much in terms of getting to the quarterback, but he’s very stout against the run and will make Dallas stronger down the middle of its defense.”"

In a closer look at the Cowboys from last season, the defense allowed an average of 4.2 yards per carry in ’14 (103.1 yards per game), so there is a need for defensive tackle with the Cowboys, but is it worth a first-round selection?

Goldman (6-4, 336 pounds) is projected by CBSSports.com as a first or second rounder, the No. 5 defensive tackle in the draft and their 32nd overall rated prospect.

The defensive tackle from Florida State will most likely be drafted anywhere from 21st to 32nd overall, so it is a safe bet to say he will won’t make it out of the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

One problem with Goldman is how he could be a fit in a 4-3 defense, the same defense the Cowboys use.

According to Lance Zierlein of NFL.com in his draft profile on Goldman, he writes about how a 4-3 scheme could be a problem for Goldman in the NFL:

"“His power at the point of attack and ability to discard blockers and actually make plays rather than just eating space will have 3-4 teams very excited about their potential nose guard of the future.”"

As the draft gets closer, the more I believe the Cowboys should stray away from defensive tackle in the first round and look to draft the best available cornerback when their turn arrives on Thursday, April 30.

The defense has already improved upon their pass rush this offseason, and they have added depth at linebacker (though they still need some work), but the cornerback position worries me the most right now for the Cowboys.

The team gave up too many big plays in the postseason (and regular season) when it came to the defensive backfield.

Yes, Goldman is a solid player, don’t get me wrong, but my belief right now is the Cowboys are best served by working to improve their defensive backfield and trying to hit the lottery by gaining an impact player at cornerback for the upcoming 2015 season.
