St. Louis Rams: Making the case for Brett Hundley

The St. Louis Rams are heading into next season with hopes of finally having a solid quarterback in place to head into clearer waters. They have yet to push the enveloped due to inconsistencies at quarterback but this offseason has proved that they might just finally have the answers they need to succeed. Acquired via trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, Nick Foles could very well be the guy they need to really make some noise and become more competitive in the NFC West. However, with the 2015 NFL Draft coming up, should they still add another quarterback into the mix just in case?

It’s no secret that Foles could indeed be something special if everything works out as envisioned. Only problem that could occur really is if he gets injured again or needs more time to fully master the Rams’ offensive playbook. However, his football IQ is so good, he should be completely fine with the latter. Drafting another quarterback though, makes sense in the grand scheme of things.

While I don’t see the Rams trading up in the draft to get one of the top quarterbacks in Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota, I can definitely see them drafting a good quarterback to develop for the future in the later rounds. Someone like Brett Hundley would be a solid direction to head in if he’s acquired later on in the draft.

At 6’3″ and 226 pounds, Hundley has a tremendous upside as being coached and trained to possibly be a hidden gem in the draft. He’s a bit raw and needs a lot of help with his pocket presence and throwing mechanics but the Rams could put him in a great position to grow over the next few years. His speed and abilities to make big plays on the fly would be a nice dimension to have on offense.

Looking at the Rams other options at quarterback currently on the roster, Austin Davis and Case Keenum are decent but not really anything to brag about. In the unfortunate scenario if Foles misses significant amounts of time in case he gets hurt, the Rams might have major problems at quarterback again if both play to their sub-par performances we’ve seen in the past.

Davis showed potential last season but needs more development from a veteran perspective. Foles should be able to mentor and show him what he needs to improve on so he could be even more consistent on the field. Last season, Davis three for 2,001 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Keenum was re-acquired via trade with the Houston Texans for a 7th round draft pick in 2016 in order to bring him back because the Rams made a mistake in waiving him earlier last season. It was a blunder by the Rams’ front office but I believe his return was done to make sure they don’t have any issues with depth moving forward.

I like what Hundley would bring to the table since I honestly believe the Rams need to load up at the position to have a great system in place for the future. I’m sure that Foles will be deemed their starter for next season with Davis as his primary backup and a developmental position given to either Keenum or Hundley in which they earn.

It’s always good to have more options than less in situations like this with the Rams at quarterback. It’s been quite some time they’ve had stability at the position and this year could the one that changes that.

A quality backup and someone they can spend a few years with to develop their traits towards the possibility of becoming something special in the future is an ideal situation to be in.

Overall, Hundley could fill that work-in-progress role nicely since he has a better upside than other quarterbacks projected to go via the later rounds of the draft. I’m also confident that he would be a better option to work with for the future than Keenum thanks to his dual-threat capabilities.
