The Cleveland Browns have a dire need at the quarterback position. Trading for Robert Griffin III would clear up that need.

How long has it been since the Cleveland Browns have had competent play from their quarterback position? Knowing this, it’s clear that the Browns need to upgrade the quarterback position. It’s a huge need now and it’s been a huge need for awhile.

Last season, the Browns finished 8-8, and they did with a timeshare at the quarterback position between

Brian Hoyer

and

Johnny Manziel

, two subpar quarterbacks. Granted, the jury is still out on Manziel, but from the evidence we saw last year, it’s clear that Manziel may not be the long-term answer at the quarterback position.

With two first-round picks in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Browns have the ammunition to move up and select either Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota, however, there may another quarterback that could be brought in by a trade. It’s no secret that the Washington Redskins are having problems inside their franchise. Robert Griffin III and Jay Gruden have a tumultuous relationship, and with the Redskins’ interest in Winston, there’s a possibility that the Redskins could be ready to move on from Griffin.

If that is the case, the team that could trade for RG3 is none other than the Browns. Not only do the Browns have a need at the quarterback position, but they really do not have a face to their franchise. Acquiting Griffin would not only be huge for the team’s performance, but it would boost their jersey sales and give them a face to be proud of.

By coming to Cleveland, Griffin may not be working with the best talent, but he would really his own keys to the offense. In Washington, however, he did not have complete say over the offense. That’s not the case in Cleveland. Another thing is that the Redskins do not have an established offensive, whereas the Browns have one of the better ones in all of football. An offensive line is vital to a quarterback’s progression in the NFL, and with the Redskins, Griffin III never really had the time to look through his reads and find the open man. This pressure led to many turnovers and many dubious passes.

Cleveland won’t have players like Alfred Morris, Pierre Garçon, Jordan Reed, and DeSean Jackson, but a fresh start could really be the cure for Griffin. The Browns hired John DeFilippo to be their offensive coordinator this offseason. DeFilippo was the quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders. He played a huge role in Derek Carr‘s transition to the NFL. If the Browns traded for RG3, both sides would benefit, as the third-year quarterback would work with an established offensive coach and DeFilippo would work with a signal-caller that has a ton of potential.

The Browns have so many needs to address in the draft, but at the end of the day, the quarterback position is the position that matters most in the NFL. It’s the most acknowledgeable as well as the most recognized position in football. Currently, the Browns are relying on either Manziel or Josh McCown to man the position in 2015. If the Browns fill out their roster correctly, they actually have an outside chance of making the playoffs. However, that will not happen with Manziel or McCown running the offense. The Browns need a franchise quarterback and Griffin III needs a fresh start. The two really are a match made in heaven.
