It has been a long road, but the most anticipated event of the NFL off season is finally here. On Thursday night, all 32 NFL teams will assemble in Chicago as they look to find the superstars of the next generation.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are a team in an interesting situation. Despite finished the 2014 season with a disappointing 9-7 record, the Chiefs are built to win now.

Led by elite pass rusher Justin Houston, the Chiefs’ defense is a major strength for the team. Last season, Kansas City only allowed 17.6 points per game, tied for the second fewest in the entire NFL. While there are a few defensive holes that need to be addressed, the Chiefs have an elite-level defensive unit.

While the offense certainly lags behind their stout defense, the pieces are in place for them to have offensive success. Running back Jamaal Charles is an absolute stud, Travis Kelce has the potential to be the next big thing at the tight end position and Jeremy Maclin helps solidly a receiving core that has been lacking in recent years.

Their offensive success in 2015 will likely come down to the play of quarterback Alex Smith. While he does not have a ton of pure talent, Smith is a capable passer who will keep them in games.

While the offensive line has some upside, they simply have not performed well as a unit. The Chiefs need to address their offensive line issues.

With Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos taking a step back last season, the Chiefs are in a prime position to compete for the AFC West title.

Starting with the 18th pick in the first round, they need to find players in the 2015 NFL Draft who can help them immediately. There is plenty of talent on their roster, but certain positions could certainly be upgraded by a talented rookie who can contribute right away.

In recent years, the Chiefs have done a great job of sitting back and taking the best player available in the draft, pretty much regardless of position. This is a strategy that has served them well, and I expect it to continue.

That being said, the Chiefs are sitting very good at a lot of positions. Specifically targeting positions of need line offensive line, wide receiver, cornerback and defensive line may be the way to go early in the draft.

With 10 total picks, the Chiefs are in prime position to add impact talent in this draft. They even have plenty of pick currency to make a trade up if they see a proper scenario.

The division is seemingly up for grabs. The Chiefs have an opportunity to reach up and take it. With a strong draft at key positions of need, the Chiefs can quickly become the favorites in the AFC West.

It is always very difficult to predict how the draft will go. One pick can change things drastically. That being said, this mock draft is a good indicator to see who the Chiefs could be targeting at each of their picks.
