Oakland Raiders: Andre Holmes To Miss 3-4 Weeks

The receiving corps in Oakland jumped quickly this offseason from being one of the weaker units in the league, to being one of the team’s best pieces. The additions of former San Francisco star Michael Crabtree and first round draft pick Amari Cooper created a bit of a logjam at receiver for the Oakland Raiders, as pointed out by NFL SpinZone’s Jonathan George. But now, it appears that may be just a bit more clear, at least for the time being, as wideout Andre Holmes is expected to miss 3-4 weeks due to a broken hand, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

This is tough news for Holmes as he was in a battle for the third receiver spot with Rod Streater, who just returned to practice on Sunday after missing most of training camp with an illness and missing most of last season with a broken foot. Now it looks as though Streater may be the starter alongside Cooper and Crabtree, as Holmes will not get much time to work with the offense in the upcoming weeks.

Andre Holmes is entering his third season with the Raiders, and led the team in receiving yards in 2014 after he effectively became the No. 1 guy due to Streater’s injury. The team’s depth chart which was last updated on August 18th had listed Holmes as directly behind Amari Cooper, but now he may be in a fight to even make the final roster due to this injury. Receiver Kenbrell Thompkins, also expected to battle for targets this season, is likely to move up on the depth chart as well, leaving Holmes out in the cold.

An undrafted player out of Division II’s Hillsdale College, Holmes has just over 1,100 career receiving yards and five touchdowns in four seasons in the NFL. He also caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Christian Ponder in the team’s first 2015 preseason game. Hopefully he can return to the field quickly so as to participate in his team’s thriving wide receiver competition.
