Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson has reportedly been lost for the season with a torn ACL suffered against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Sunday afternoon’s preseason game. While the Packers still await final MRI results to confirm the diagnosis, the first word from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network suggests the worst case scenario is Green Bay’s reality.

This is a gut-punch for the Packers, and for Jordy Nelson himself, who was coming off an incredible season and entering 2016 as a top-10 receiver in the NFL. Last year, the 2008 second round pick hauled in 98 passes for 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Green Bay was set to open the season with an extremely talented group of skill-position players, which will prevent this major blow from sidetracking their season entirely. Randall Cobb is a proven top option from the inside and outside, while second-year man Davante Adams will now have a massive opportunity to establish himself amidst great offseason hype.

Nelson’s injury, assuming it does result in him missing the entire 2015 season, shouldn’t require the Packers to look outside of the organization. I immediately saw pleas for Reggie Wayne or Wes Welker, but I’ve never believed any rumored interest between Green Bay and the two veterans. General manager Ted Thompson believes in building from within, and should continue to do so.

Rookie Ty Montgomery may now be thrust into a role quicker than he’d expected, while physical marvel Jeff Janis now enters the conversation for a heavy dose of snaps. The Packers will carry on just fine with Aaron Rodgers under centre regardless of the weapons surrounding him, but this takes some serious air out of the Packers fan base.
