Final New York Jets Pregame Thoughts

facebooktwitterreddit

Everybody is ready for some breakfast football.  The New York Jets take on the Miami Dolphins in the first ever divisional matchup in the International Series.  Take a look at my keys to the game here.  Here are some final thoughts from a Jets’ perspective:

  • Watch for a key matchup on the Jets’ offensive line.  Willie Colon did not make the trip, and starting in his place is Brian Winters.  Winters has stated that he feels better at right guard than he does at left, where he has played for the Jets in the past and been inconsistent.  Winters will be put to the test in this one, as he will see a lot of Ndomukong Suh.  It’s  huge matchup that will go a long way in deciding the fate of the Jets’ running game.
  • Watch how the Jets handle Jarvis Landry.  We know he is the best wide receiver on the Dolphins.  Antonio Cromartie and Darrelle Revis, although full participants in practice at the end of the week, were on the injury report all week.  Will Cromartie’s hip and/or Darrelle Revis’ hamstring allow more openings for Landry to exploit?  Watch this early, and see how the Jets respond.

  • Will Eric Decker be able to go?  Todd Bowles didn’t really tip his hand as to which way he was leaning with Decker, and we saw how the Jets’ passing game suffered without him.  Chris Owusu has been listed out for the game, so if Decker can’t go, the passing game will suffer.  Watch him, if he plays, and see if he is looking like his old self, or is still hampered by the knee injury that kept him out last week.
  • This could be a very interesting game for Ryan Fitzpatrick.  For the first time last week, we saw the reason why Fitzpatrick never made a career for himself as a successful starter.  For all of his Harvard smarts, he forces the ball into tight coverage, and throws interceptions.  Which Fitzpatrick will Jets’ fans see from London?  Will he get back on track, or will we see more of the same journeyman quarterback that is inconsistent and a career backup?
  • Watch out for a strong surge from the Dolphins early.  There has been a lot of talk about the team receiving some shakeups in their coaching staff if they lose to the Jets.  Though there are reports that Joe Philbin has nearly lost the team, don’t be surprised if the Dolphins garner the strength to rally around their coach and come out flying.  The Jets may just have a strong surge from their 1-2 opponents to deal with as the game opens.
  • The running game for the Jets will likely hinge on the quad muscle of Chris Ivory.  He didn’t take a snap last week, but is expected to be a full participant in the festivities in London.  The Jets need him badly.
