New Orleans Saints make terrible decision to start Drew Brees

Quarterback Drew Brees is expected to start tonight against the Dallas Cowboys but it’s a terrible decision by the New Orleans Saints to rush his return.

While many understand the impact that Brees brings to the table for the Saints, truth of the matter is he’s still not truly 100% from his shoulder injury. Times are desperate these days for the Saints who have yet to win a game this season and are looking for anything to help build some sort of momentum towards a better direction. But this decision to start him somewhat prematurely is a terrible decision.

For the first time in his days with the Saints due to injury, Brees missed last week’s game against the Carolina Panthers in which the Saints lost 27-22. Dealing with a shoulder injury is pretty tough considering how much wear and tear Brees has accumulated over his 15-year career in the NFL.

At the current moment, his exact injury is a bruised right rotator cuff which requires time off to heal properly. I understand that it’s important for the Saints to put themselves in a position to win but to rush Brees instead of giving him just one more week to come back healthier is a drastic mistake.

The Cowboys will absolutely bring the heat to Brees all night long tonight on Sunday Night Football. The Cowboys are also a great road team and will make sure to unleash some strategic defensive strategies to not only contain Brees but keep him on his toes by blitzing him often.

Should Brees get roughed up tonight and further injures his shoulder, it would be a devastating blow that could see him miss significant amounts of time or even the rest of the season should he suffer a shoulder tear or aggravate things even more.

In an article written by Mike Triplett of ESPN.com, here is what Brees said about the latest on his shoulder injury:

"“Basically what the doctor told me was the cuff muscles at times will just shut down if they’re inflamed,” Brees said. “They’re basically telling the body, ‘I’m injured. I need time to heal, I’m not going to work until the inflammation goes away.’ The tough part was with the balance between resting it, getting the inflammation out of it and, at the same time, strengthening it.”"

Even Brees sounds like he’s concerned that perhaps he didn’t get enough rest to let his shoulder heal naturally. Another week off could have done the trick but he will be put in a position to once again carry this team to get a win that could effectively save their season. Going 0-4 is incredibly hard to bounce back from but it just doesn’t make sense to rush him when it’s clear he needs a bit more time.

If all goes well tonight for Brees, he’ll get back into the swing of things after missing just a week of action. If he goes on a throwing clinic and does more damage to his shoulder, this could be a decision that comes back to haunt the Saints in the future. They might regret this decision big time if things don’t go according to plan.
