Dallas Cowboys: Are They Doomed Without Tony Romo?

The Dallas Cowboys have lost four straight games since Tony Romo left during their Week 2 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. However, Romo’s collarbone injury has him out until the Cowboys face the Miami Dolphins on November 22. Then four days later they have their annual Thanksgiving game.

Before their game with the Dolphins, the Cowboys will face the Seattle Seahawks, Eagles, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Seahawks aren’t the team they were a season ago, but their defense is still formidable especially in the first three quarters of games. The Eagles are heating up at the right moments despite not playing their best football offensively. On Sunday, the Buccaneers blew a 24-0 lead in a 31-30 loss to the Washington Redskins.

Overall, it’s not the worst schedule, but those games could all be losses given how the Cowboys have played without Romo. Yes, they are without Dez Bryant as well, but Matt Cassel is a NFL veteran that should be playing better than throwing interceptions. He took risks and it didn’t pay off except for the one to tie the game late before the Giants special team ran back the kick return for a score.

The Buffalo Bills traded Cassel to the Cowboys in September because Dallas needed a viable option to replace Romo due to injury, because Brandon Weeden isn’t that guy. However, the trade isn’t paying off yet. Understandably, it’s a small portion size to evaluate right now, but the Cowboys are reeling with four-straight losses after starting 2-0 and Cassel didn’t impress in his Cowboys debut.

There’s still a chance to stay competitive within a rather mediocre NFC East. However, Cassel has some work to do with the offense this week before the Seahawks come to the Lone Star State. The Cowboys have the potential when they are fully healthy, but so far Cassel hasn’t showed any hope to the fans or his team.

They are reeling and could easily go on a seven-game losing streak without Romo. This would be way below the goal of staying competitive without Romo and Bryant. There’s still a lot of season left for the Cowboys, but it’s currently headed for the city of doom if they can’t turn it around.

Cassel is a better quarterback than Weeden. However, he is facing two tough defenses the next games in the Seahawks and Eagles. They will punish him if he repeats Sunday’s performance against the Giants. This week Cassel has a lot of film study and learning to fix his issues and help save the Cowboys season so there’s a chance when Romo returns from injury.
