We all understand the 2016 NFL Draft is still six months away, but the Dallas Cowboys are currently 3-8 overall and are having their issues with the quarterback position this season, with multiple injuries to franchise quarterback Tony Romo, and the players chosen to replace him on the field this season have vastly under performed.

Romo has missed all but parts of four games this season with left shoulder injuries, after being injured in Week 2 in the second half against the Philadelphia Eagles, and then after returning after missing around two months was injured again in the second game of his comeback, leaving the Cowboys with Matt Cassel as the starting signal caller for the remainder of the season.

Cassel and then-Cowboys quarterback Brandon Weeden (who is now with the Baltimore Ravens) went 0-7 in their starts this season as the Cowboys’ starter in replacement of Romo. Cassel didn’t do a lot to keep the Cowboys viable in the Thanksgiving loss to the Carolina Panthers, though it should be stated Romo and the Cowboys were having a terrible game before Cassel even entered that game.

Currently, the Cowboys hold a draft pick from 4-6, so that’s an early idea as to where they would be drafting if it were upcoming. After 12 weeks, the Cowboys have the aforementioned three wins, but the state of the NFC East is awful as the Washington Redskins and New York Giants are tied for first place at 5-6 each and the Philadelphia Eagles are 4-7 overall, leaving the Cowboys just two games back of first place. So sadly, the three-win Cowboys still have a chance to repeat as division champions.

With the playoffs all but a hope and a prayer, the Cowboys should start evaluating players on and off their roster for next season (which I’m sure they are doing), as this year is a wash and never gained any momentum since Week 2.

The Cowboys need a much better plan at the quarterback position for the future, because with the injury history of Romo, and the fact he is 36 years old next season, they need to begin a longterm place for the future of the quarterback position.

That thought leads us to the ’16 NFL Draft with the Cowboys most likely holding a Top 10 pick (barring any miracle), so in one of the rounds where they hold a draft choice, they need to really take a look at drafting a potential replacement for Romo. The Cowboys really need to begin grooming a quarterback for the future, because with the injury history of Romo, he’s no sure thing anymore.

As stated earlier, the draft is still six months away, and this is just a quick look at four quarterbacks who will most likely be in the draft to get our motors started in beginning to think about a potential backup at the position for next season.

Each week, we can start taking look at a variety of quarterbacks who might draw the Cowboys’ interest this offseason.
