The Kansas City Chiefs need help when it comes to their defensive secondary. Safety Vonn Bell would be a smart selection to make on draft weekend thanks to everything he brings to the table.

Besides their need at upgrading their offensive line via the 2016 NFL Draft, the Chiefs also have some weaknesses when it comes to their defensive secondary. At the current moment, there is a bit of uncertainty when it comes to keeping top safety Eric Berry from hitting free agency.

According to Colin Hubbard over at BloggingDirty.com, the contract talks between the Chiefs and Berry have stalled. Both sides can’t find a common ground in order to move forward into a new deal that would lock up one of the premier safeties in the NFL.

While the Chiefs also have their franchise tag handy, there is no guarantee they’ll use it on Berry who will have plenty of teams looking to acquire his services should he hit free agency. If such a fate happens, the Chiefs would have to draft his replacement and even if Berry does stay, adding more quality depth around him will also be another key to continued success.

Safety Vonn Bell would be a nice addition to the Chiefs’ defense that could be molded to the next level easily. While in my recent mock draft I had the Chiefs go with offensive lineman Cody Whitehair at No. 28, in the second round they should be able to draft Bell who fits their needs well at the position.

At 5’11 and 205 pounds out of Ohio State, Bell brings speed and a keen defensive awareness to a defense. He’s able to keep up with speedy receivers coming his way and loves to make big defensive stops against opposing teams.

In his collegiate career, Bell totaled 175 tackles, one sack, nine interceptions and 15 passes defended. While I don’t think the Chiefs should reach high for Bell in the first round, he should be available in the second or even third round depending on how his draft stock is come that time.

Bell has a lot of great attributes that make him stand out from the rest when it comes to his work ethic, leadership and overall consistency. He was a solid part of Ohio State’s defense as he continued to hone his craft each season preparing for his big moment in the pros.

He should have an easy transition into the NFL as he’s good with either zone or man-to-man coverage, which bodes well with how the defense of the Chiefs operate. He’s also confident in every single thing he does and brings an incredible amount of energy when he’s on the football field to rally his teammates straight to victory.

In an article written by Tyler Dunne of The Buffalo News, here is what Bell had to say about why he’s good at what he does and the possibility of being a high first-round draft pick:

"You just want to be that guy who provides that energy. And it’s all off preparation. Constant film study. Knowing your opponent. Know what type of routes they run, know what type of ball the quarterback throws."

Overall, no matter what happens between the Chiefs and Berry, Bell sounds like and would excel for the Chiefs either as his future replacement or someone to be groomed for a bright future. Either way, he makes a ton of sense for the Chiefs to take a chance on as he could be the real deal once he enters the NFL.
