The San Diego Chargers need to bolster their defensive line heading into next season. That’s why it makes sense for them to set their sights on defensive end Joey Bosa in the 2016 NFL Draft.

It’s no secret that the Chargers’ defense was one of the worst last season. They couldn’t get to the quarterback or create key turnovers and often times looked like a complete disaster as opposing teams were able to efficiently execute anything against them. Thanks to this year’s draft however, things should hopefully head into a much better direction on defense.

With the way initial mock drafts have been shaping up so far this offseason, many analysts believe Bosa could drop to the Chargers when they’re on the clock with their No. 3 overall pick. Even in my most recent mock draft, I have the Chargers easily selecting him as offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil heads to the Tennessee Titans and quarterback Jared Goff to the Cleveland Browns, respectively.

Bosa would bring some much-needed aggression and a very impressive resume to the Chargers’ defense. In his collegiate career at Ohio State, Bosa totaled 148 tackles, 26.0 sacks and five forced fumbles. He has a high football IQ, speed and an incredible ability to either rush or take down opposing quarterbacks. He also has great character attributes that could make him a future captain on the Chargers.

At 6’6″ and 275 pounds, Bosa would be exactly what the Chargers need to bring their defense back to a respectable standard next season. He’s an immediate starter and would undoubtedly make some major noise in his rookie season.

The Chargers would have to change things up a bit when it comes to their defensive playbook if Bosa is indeed the direction they want to go in.

It shouldn’t be a problem since certainly, their abysmal defensive playbook of last season should be completely redone to cater to his strengths as well as all the new additions the Chargers are expected to make.

Bosa would also add a nice dimension to the Chargers’ run defense since he knows how to get to the ball-carrier with speed and precision. Defense wins championships in the grand scheme of things as everyone will do their best to copy the strategy of the reigning Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos to replicate such success in 2016.

The Chargers will more than likely make the majority of their selections based on upgrading their defense in this year’s draft. They have needs at defensive end, linebacker and even in their defensive secondary. Bosa would be the biggest addition they could make to lead the way for a major overhaul on that part of the team to make it a strength again next season.

It’s hard to predict anything these days but make no secret about it, Bosa will more than likely be the next big thing to hit the NFL. As the Chargers do their very best to bounce back from their 4-12 season last year, drafting Bosa is an easy way to restore hope that better memories are indeed coming to San Diego.
