The Washington Redskins have been surprising everyone with their selections in the 2016 NFL draft. Their third round pick was no different.

The Washington Redskins selected Virginia Tech cornerback Kendall Fuller with the 84th overall pick in the draft. While Fuller is a great player, I don’t think anyone saw this one coming.

With Josh Norman, Bashaud Breeland, Chris Culliver, Quinton Dunbar, Will Blackmon, and Greg Toler, cornerback wasn’t exactly the number-one concern of the Redskins.

If anyone is cut, expect it to be Culliver, simply because of the money it would save Washington (via John Keim of ESPN). However, the Redskins could decided that they’d rather have the deepest cornerback group in the NFL. Norman and Breeland will be the top two, there’s no doubt about that one. Dunbar is the development piece, and Blackmon and Toler will be there strictly for depth purposes.

Culliver’s no slouch. In fact, he was one of the Redskins biggest offseason acquisitions last year. He tore his ACL and MCL in 2015 however, and may not be ready for the start of 2016.

Kendall Fuller saw his production decline over the years, ending with no interceptions in just three games last season due to injury. While that may not look pretty, he did record six interceptions in 2013 and two more in 2014. He’s got the ability to find the ball in the air and make the play.

After the second round, I had no doubt in my mind that the Redskins would take a defensive tackle in the third round. When they’re turn came to pick in the round and Andrew Billings for Baylor University was still available, it seemed like a no-brainer.

For the second straight round I was completely fooled however, and the Redskins went with a cornerback.

Kendall Fuller is a great player, but his injury concerns, production drop off, and the fact that he’s not a defensive tackle (specifically Billings), makes this a tough one to grade.

I’m giving the Redskins a C grade for the Kendall Fuller pick, however, he’s definitely got the potential to prove me wrong.
