When it comes to the Houston Texans, they went all in by acquiring quarterback Brock Osweiler with hopes of finally having a franchise quarterback to push the envelope for the future. It might end up being a huge risk that won’t pay off in the long run.

The most important position on any team is easily at quarterback. He’s the one under center, commanding an offense straight to victory. It’s a position that the Texans have had some difficulty for quite some time in finding stability and success in. With their appearance (and shutout) in the NFL Playoffs last year against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Texans knew if they wanted to be a contender, they needed to have a true franchise quarterback in place ready to lead the charge.

The Texans had their sights on Osweiler since he’s an up-and-coming quarterback with a ton of upside. He showed moments of brilliance last season with the Denver Broncos but also at times proved that he just wasn’t ready for the spotlight just yet. He’s spent a ton of time honing his craft with future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning but he still is raw when it comes to adjusting his play and understanding what it takes to be consistent.

It got to the point where the Broncos had to resort back to Manning late last season, who was clearly on the decline and even injured to lead this team straight to victory. The Broncos ended up winning a Super Bowl Championship last season, but it wasn’t from their stellar play at quarterback. Manning wasn’t the same player we all grew to watch in awe and Osweiler was even worse. It has to leave much to the imagination as to why the Broncos didn’t want to risk taking a chance with Osweiler and went to Manning to seal the deal with everything on the line.

The Texans are hoping that the moments of brilliance they saw last season when Osweiler was leading the Broncos translates well in Texas. It remains to be seen if he can be an effective starting quarterback but the Texans paid him top dollar in believing he can be. He receiver a four-year, $72M contract since the Texans are built to win now and hope he’s the missing piece to put together a championship season.

At the end of the day, Osweiler is one huge question mark.

There is no guarantee he’s going to deliver major results for the Texans this upcoming season.

Hope is one thing but in the grand scheme of things, stats never lie.

In his career so far, Osweiler totaled 2,126 passing yards, 187 completions, 11 touchdowns and six interceptions.

The Texans paid top dollar for a franchise quarterback that well, hasn’t put up the stats to prove he can be one that throws for 30 touchdowns in a season. It’s a huge risk that could end up proving to be a major mistake if he doesn’t deliver huge results in his first year with the team.

Overall, if Osweiler doesn’t pan out, it will once again prove that the best teams in the NFL never win championships in free agency. It was a risky move on the part of the Texans to acquire Osweiler as sometimes hope doesn’t always equal successful results.
