The Countdown to Kickoff series continues on with a profile on Buffalo Bills veteran running back LeSean McCoy.

Getting closer.

There are exactly 25 days until the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers open up the 2016 NFL regular season with a Super Bowl rematch. In the meantime, we at NFL Spin Zone are going to profile a player each day as we countdown the days to kickoff.

We began by previewing the rookie defensive end of the San Diego Chargers in Joey Boss (No. 99) more than two months ago. On Saturday, it was No. 26, Washington Redskins cornerback No. 26 Bashaud Breeland. You can play catch up here.

When it comes to the No. 25 and Pro Football Hall of Famers, there’s wide receivers Fred Biletnikoff (MVP of Super Bowl XI with the Oakland Raiders) and Tommy McDonald. Currently, there’s four-time Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles of the Kansas City Chiefs, who looks to bounce back in 2016 after an injury-marred year.

And there’s also LeSean McCoy of the Buffalo Bills. In his first season in Orchard Park, after six years with the Philadelphia Eagles, the 2013 NFL rushing champion led his new club with 895 yards on the ground despite missing four games. In seven NFL campaigns (four resulting in Pro Bowl invitations), McCoy has amassed 10,261 yards from scrimmage and 59 touchdowns. In 2015, the Bills led the league in rushing yards per game.

The additions of McCoy, quarterback Tyrod Taylor and tight end Charles Clay last offseason helped Buffalo made major strides on offense after an erratic showing in 2014. Unfortunately, the defense didn’t live up to expectations and the franchise is still looking for its first playoff berth since 1999.

Buffalo’s backfield will definitely have a different look to it this fall. The free-agent addition of veteran runner Reggie Bush helps what with second-year pro Karlos Williams (currently on the non-football illness list) suspended for the first four games of 2016 (via Kevin Patra of NFL.com).

There’s also Mike Gillislee and 2016 fifth-round pick Jonathan Williams. The running back position has been an area of concern this offseason for any number of reasons. But when it’s all said and done, head coach Rex Ryan needs LeSean to be the real McCoy.
