Carson Wentz Dominates Opening Drive, Throws First NFL Touchdown (Video)

The Carson Wentz era has started well in Philadelphia.

The big question heading into the 2016 NFL season for the Philadelphia Eagles was whether drafting Carson Wentz was the right decision. The Eagles moved all the way up to the second overall pick, just to take the former North Dakota State quarterback.

One drive into his career, it looks to have been smart.

Wentz dominated on the drive, going 4-5 with 57 yards passing and a touchdown. His only incompletion was a drop by Jordan Matthews on a perfectly thrown ball.

However, Wentz did get some help on his first drive from an amazing one-handed catch by tight end Zach Ertz.

It is a perfectly thrown ball by Wentz, putting it only where his player can catch it. Ertz shows great body control and catching ability as he holds on hitting the ground with the one hand. Having a tight end that can become a security blanket for a rookie quarterback is huge, so this was obviously a moral booster for the first year signal-caller.

The best part of the drive, however, wasn’t this beautiful catch by Ertz. It was Wentz flashing his elite accuracy when he delivered a dime for his first NFL touchdown pass.

The ball couldn’t have been thrown better, as Wentz put perfect touch on it and led Matthews right into the end zone. Matthews made up for his earlier drop on the drive by securing this one and getting both of his feet inbounds.

It couldn’t have started any better for Wentz, but there is a lot of game left for the rookie. Still, that looked like the No. 2 overall pick out there, which is a good sign.
