Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was carted off the field after taking a big accidental hit on the sidelines.

The Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers were facing off at Mile High in NFL Week 8. However, the AFC West matchup took a scary turn early in the second quarter as it pertains to Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.

With the Chargers on offense, the Broncos defense read the play perfectly. Bradley Roby jumped the route and went off to the races for six points on the pick-six. However, what happened behind the interception was how the frightening moment got started.

As one of the Chargers receivers was still running his route toward the Broncos sideline, his momentum carried him hard into the Denver bench. In doing so, the Chargers player came directly into contact with Phillips and delivered an unintentional big hit on the defensive coordinator. The veteran coach and coordinator was sent flying to the ground on the sideline, where he stayed down for quite some time:

While NFL players may be able to take that type of hit, Wade Phillips is a 69-year-old coach. He’s in no way ready or able to take that type of blow or even that type of fall to the ground.

The Denver coordinator was treated on the ground for several minutes before the cart was brought out and he was stretchered off of the field. He was waving his finger from the car as he exited the field, but there’s no word just yet as to his condition.

Let’s all hope Phillips is okay after a harrowing moment in Denver.
