DeMarcus Ware is set to hit free agency and a possible return to the Dallas Cowboys isn’t out of the question.

DeMarcus Ware won his only Super Bowl ring with the Denver Broncos after the 2015 season. But his legend began with the Dallas Cowboys. It sounds like he could be eyeing a return to Dallas, which seems to be back on the road to glory with Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott leading the way.

When the offseason starts getting into swing, the Cowboys are a part of some big-ticket rumors. Some of them, such as showing interest in Adrian Peterson, seem ridiculous and designed to get attention. However, there is one potential signing that could benefit the Cowboys and would also make sense for the player interested in joining.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, while DeMarcus Ware is interested in returning to the Broncos, a statement he made himself after new head coach Vance Joseph confirmed that he would be a part of the Broncos future plans, he has kept the idea of returning to the Cowboys in mind.

Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli placed second in the Associated Press’s “Assistant Coach of the Year” honors, because he was able to lead the Cowboys defense to a credible season despite completely lacking a pass rush.

Demarcus Lawrence‘s injury woes and Randy Gregory‘s suspensions for substance abuse make them both unreliable. Those two young talents are easily their best edge rushers, and the Cowboys must add a better defensive end if they want to push the envelope for a Super Bowl in an increasingly competitive NFC.

Ware is 34, but he is still one of the league’s most effective edge rushers. The former 20-sack artist in Dallas recorded just four sacks last season and wasn’t completely healthy, but he was excellent in 2015 when the Broncos won the Super Bowl. At his age, Ware wouldn’t be too expensive, and he wouldn’t command a long-term deal due to the injury concerns. Remember, Ware is currently recovering from back surgery.

A reunion between the Cowboys and Ware would be nice, but it would have to come at the right price. Ware’s veteran know-how and work as a pass rusher can help the Cowboys, but it would be a problem if he ends up being their best pass rusher in 2017. If they sign Ware to pair with Lawrence, they should still add another body.

There aren’t many good pass rushers set to hit the free agent market this offseason, and you could argue that Jason Pierre-Paul, Jabaal Sheard, and Dwight Freeney are the only superior 4-3 defensive ends. Starting with Ware, though, would be a nice beginning to free agency in Dallas.
