Dallas Cowboys: Case For Picking DeMarcus Walker in 2017 NFL Draft

All the focus is on pass rushers for the Dallas Cowboys in the 2017 NFL Draft and one player who could fit well is Florida State’s DeMarcus Walker.

The Dallas Cowboys need help rushing opposing quarterbacks. In 2016, they were overachievers in this area during the regular season, but in the playoffs they couldn’t generate any pressure on Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. That resulted in a one-and-done postseason, followed by non-stop speculation about how to fix the issue.

While most draft gurus are pining for a defensive end in Round 1, the Cowboys don’t necessarily have to go this route. This draft is pretty stacked with talented edge rushers and one guy who was incredibly productive in college that could be available in round two is DeMarcus Walker of Florida State.

Targeting a guy like Walker would allow Dallas to use their first-round pick on another position of need, like safety or cornerback. For Dallas, these two positions are almost as vital with safeties Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox as well as corners Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne all headed for free agency.

Walker could also be a great fit in Dallas thanks to his ability to set the edge as well as move inside to play the three-technique if needed. While some scouts think he doesn’t fit into one role, Dallas defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli may like his size and fit as he loves to use his defensive linemen in waves while also moving their position.

Tackles David Irving and Tyrone Crawford played inside at their normal positions as well as outside as defensive ends. Walker could be a similar player that allows greater flexibility for their defensive coach.

A statistical monster, Walker is considered a tough tackler, and won the 2016 ACC Defensive Player of the Year Award. Where he falls short is in his overall speed and there are questions about his motivation. There is no question however that when he is zeroed in, he is incredibly disruptive.

Questions about where he fits in the line and his motor are the reason Walker may be there in Round 2. His production, howeve,r makes it seem like he shouldn’t be. In four seasons with the Seminoles, Walker recorded 41.5 sacks with 16 of those coming during his senior season. While he may not be the impact pass rusher that many would hope for, Walker would be a welcome addition that could develop into a star for Dallas.
