The market has been quiet for free agent cornerback Darrelle Revis, but could he be the missing piece the Dolphins are looking for to solidify their secondary?

There are still a few huge names left in free agency. Granted, these players may be a bit older and not quite what they used to be, but their name still carries weight among fans and in league circles. On the defensive side of the ball, no name currently left on the market makes ears perk up more than Darrelle Revis. The Miami Dolphins are in need of secondary help, so should they look to Revis?

There are a number of questions surrounding the once elite corner. We aren’t sure how much he has left in the tank, or how much money he’s looking to get. While he certainly declined noticeably last season, Revis wasn’t as bad as many would lead you to believe and seems to be a victim of the impossibly high standard he’s set for himself over the course of his career.

We’ve also seen many players, most recently Charles Woodson, revive their career when moving to safety, something anyone signing Revis must consider. With that said, if Miami decides to take a look at Revis, they need to understand they will not be getting an elite top corner and his contract must reflect that.

However, he can still contribute to a defense in need of a boost against the pass. In fact, if they are to sign him, they should almost certainly move Revis to safety and fill the void next to Reshad Jones. Not only has Revis proven to still be far above average in coverage, he’s also displayed strong ball skills during his time in the league. Although, his low-target rate has prevented him from really flourishing in that area.

A secondary with Jones and Revis manning the middle of the field has to intrigue the Miami front office. If he agrees to move to safety and they can sign him on a reasonable two-year contract, the Dolphins should jump on it. There isn’t a player left on the market that can have the impact Revis could, and it’s hard to believe a rookie can have a larger impact in Year 1.

So, why not make a move for Revis if the price is right? Moreover, there isn’t a Dolphins fan alive that wants to pass on an opportunity to stick it to the New York Jets.

Miami needs to make some sort of move in regards to their safety situation prior to the start of training camp. Nate Allen can’t be relied on as a 16-game starter. Perhaps Revis is the answer. It will be interesting to see what move they make. Nevertheless, for the first time in quite a while, I have faith in this front office.
