Take an in-depth look at the Detroit Lions potential 2017 NFL draft first-round pick, cornerback Marlon Humphrey.

Marlon Humphrey has been idolized in Alabama for years. It’s now time for him to make a name for himself on the Detroit Lions. The son of a former NFL player Bobby Humphrey, he quickly followed in his father’s footsteps attending his alma mater, Alabama. After just his redshirt sophomore year in college, however, Humphrey declared he was entering the 2017 NFL draft.

Humphrey diversified his role for the Crimson Tide. He played pass and run coverage, as well as special teams. Humphrey received the starting role as a redshirt freshman in 2015. In 2015, Humphrey was named a member of the Freshmen All-SEC Team. That year he had three interceptions, two forced fumbles and 45 tackles. Yes, that was during his first year of college football.

The following year was even more impressive. Humphrey played 14 games where he recorded 36 tackles. He also had two interceptions, returning one of them to the end zone, recording his first touchdown.

Following that, he declared for the draft and began the process. With that, here’s a look at his  athletic testing at the NFL Scouting Combine and at his pro day

Strengths

More from Detroit Lions

Humphrey’s size and speed are extremely impressive, and he uses his build to defend. He’s aware of his surroundings and can read and understand plays in a timely manner. Humphrey is athletic, flexible and explosive. He has great eye contact and hand usage. With high endurance and stability, he has started every one of his college games. His speed and defensive skills also make him an important and talented addition to special teams.

Weaknesses

Although he’s athletic, he can’t cover the slot. Humphrey doesn’t make plays on the ball because he gets too focused on the receiver rather than the ball. He doesn’t re-route well due to his hip stiffness. Humphrey is also penalty prone when it comes to holding.

Draft Day Prediction

History seems to repeat itself when it comes to the Lions needing a solid cornerback. Despite signing ex- Raider D.J. Hayden, the Lions need a young cornerback like Humphrey for future years to come. Unfortunately for the Lions, Humphrey is expected to be drafted with the 13th pick going to the Arizona Cardinals. Should he fall in the draft, and still be available by the 21st pick, the Detroit Lions need to make a move on this top-ranked cornerback.
