Jared Goff’s progress has become stunningly more positive over the course of a single week for the Los Angeles Rams

Those Jared Goff progress reports, or more precisely, those Jared Goff lack-of-progress reports, may have been greatly exaggerated.

Last week, the blogsphere went off about Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay’s comments insinuating a vote of no confidence in the second-year quarterback. Now, Goff could be a candidate for comeback player of the year at the start of the third week of Rams OTAs.

McVay was complimentary of Goff in talking to the media after Monday’s voluntary practice, as TheRams.com’s transcript of the media session demonstrates:

"“We’re going to play the guys that give us the ability to win football games and the guys that are competing at the highest level. Clearly, Jared has done that so far. It’s a one day at a time process, but what he has done is just picking things up. He’s getting better every single day and he’s definitely commanded that role. He did that again today..”"

McVay’s sentiments regarding the Goff progress at OTAs were that much more positive than those that led to the firestorm about the quarterback’s performance last week, as SB Nation reported.

"“Right now, we feel very good about what they’ve both done. Jared has done a nice job getting better, but you always want to make sure that you’re playing the guy that you feel like gives you the best ability to win football games, because we owe it to our coaches, to our players and to this organization to do that. I think what we’ve seen is good for those guys, but right now Jared’s the starter and he’s done a nice job commanding that role.”“Right now, we feel very good about what they’ve both done. Both reactions show that any outside evaluations of Goff in June are not worth an abundance of deep thought. Goff’s teammates, however, also are saying they notice a change in his demeanor this season, according to ESPN.com. That suggests a positive outlook for 2017.

“You can tell, especially just starting with the command of the offense, him being able to take that and control the huddle and get guys lined up, and keep that poise when things aren’t going well and when things are going well,” tight end Tyler Higbee said. “He looks good.”

Of course, there’s still plenty of time to reverse the positive sentiments on the Goff progress before the 2017 season starts. However, the second-year quarterback has clearly earned more respect from the coaching staff and from his teammates than previously thought.
