Washington Redskins: Dan Snyder wants Kirk Cousins for long haul

Reports now suggest Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder wants Kirk Cousins around for a long time.

The ongoing saga regarding Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins’ talks about a long-term contract has been tumultuous, to say the least. One party says one thing, another says something else, and no one really has much of an idea what’s going to happen. However, there may be some optimistic headway being made as of late.

Owner Dan Snyder’s involvement in the contract talks with Cousins are a good sign. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the situation has “improved”:

"One reason for the positive outlook is that Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has gotten involved, making it known how much Washington wants to re-sign Cousins."

Let’s just assume Snyder had a part all along in negotiations. Giving his take on the situation obviously sparked team president Bruce Allen. I don’t think he cared one way or another. All Cousins has to do is his job. Everyone is happy.

July 15 is only getting closer. If they decide to continue with the tag on Cousins, he has every right to make a move next offseason. The former Michigan State quarterback will make $24 million this year if things stay on track.

A lot of what’s going on has to do with trust. When you trust a person, you’re going to invest in them long-term. Whatever they saw last season rattled them. I’m not talking about the interception that ended their playoff hopes. I’m talking about the entire body of work.

Look at the numbers and yes, they look great. However, they are waiting for something to reveal itself in the way Cousins plays. What that is, only the Redskins front office knows. With the all the defensive pickups and wide receiver adjustments, it would be a shame to have a great season and then watch a person you developed walk out the door in 2018.

Cousins has been honest about his feelings. He wants to be where he’s wanted, and he’s said on record it’s on them to make it happen (per ESPN). He’s right. I think Snyder realizes it’s time for the Redskins to walk the walk.
