One NFL analyst thinks the Dallas Cowboys and Adrian Peterson could finally join forces after years of speculation of a pairing

For years, there have been dots connected between the Dallas Cowboys and future Hall of Fame running back Adrian Peterson. The Texas native starred at Oklahoma and has since gone on to have seven Pro Bowl berths and is No. 8 all-time in rushing yards.

Peterson did most of his damage with the Minnesota Vikings but has spent the past two seasons with three different teams. He did have a career resurgence in 2018 as Peterson rushed for 1,042 yards as a member of the Washington Redskins.

Once again a free agent, Bill Barnwell of ESPN says the dominoes could fall in a way that sees AP wearing the star on his helmet in 2019.

"“It has been a rumor going back half a decade by now, but Peterson has reportedly wanted to make a stop in Dallas before ending his career. The Palestine, Texas, product impressed as Washington’s starter in 2018, but with Derrius Guice coming back, Peterson might want to take his chances behind Ezekiel Elliott on a one-year deal.” ‚— Barnwell, ESPN"

Of course, this would only happen if Peterson is resigned to being a backup. There’s no way that he will unseat Ezekiel Elliott, who led the NFL in rushing in 2016 and 2018. Having said that, the Cowboys would be wise to get someone who can take some of the load off Elliott’s shoulders as he’s taken a beating with the number of touches he’s been given.

Another factor that could lead to Peterson landing back in his home state is the rumor that Zeke could be a potential holdout. Should something happen to where Dallas is without Elliott for any amount of time as the business side of the game takes place, someone like Peterson could keep the offense moving.

Of course, that’s something that’s far off in the offseason and fans hope it doesn’t come to that at all. The real reason for wanting Peterson would be the benefit of having someone capable of carrying the load and giving their workhorse a breather should Elliott again start to get banged up during the course of a long season.
