The Jets decided to part ways with Darrelle Revis, sending him to Tampa Bay for a 1st round pick in this years draft and a conditional 3rd or 4th round pick in next year’s. This clears cap and pressure to the Jets front office and sets the stage for a heavy rebuilding phase. The Jets now have 2 top 15 picks at the price of possibly the best defensive player in football, the Jets must make the most of this opportunity. This year’s draft seems to have a few elite players but has many more great mid round prospects with high ceilings. With 2 top 15 picks, the Jets have the power to trade back and use this deep 2nd round grade draft to fill more glaring needs with starters immediately. If players like Star Lotulelei, Barkevious Mingo, Cordarrelle Patterson, Tavon Austin or Chance Warmack are still available at pick #13, the Jets will seamlessly be able to pick up at least a 2nd rounder for a not too deep trade back. The current positions on the team without surefire starters include TE, RB, OL, WR, OLB, S, not to mention quarterback. Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson proved last year that they can cover WRs without the help of Revis, so the Jets can wait and get a high ceiling developmental slot CB instead of a potential #1.

Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Round 1 – Eziekiel Ansah, OLB, BYU – The Jets need an elite pass rusher to get back on the map defensively. There is no perfect pass rusher in the draft, that has both the stats and the good workouts. A team with the Jets should focus on an athletic player and can count on Rex to coach a raw talent player like Ansah up. Ansah is versatile and can play LB and has also played DT and DE. In selecting Ansah, a true defensive coach like Rex Ryan now has a pass rusher that he can line up to rush the pass from anywhere, which seems like something Rex would be into.

December 29, 2012; Bronx, NY, USA; Syracuse Orange quarterback Ryan Nassib (12) runs with the ball against the West Virginia Mountaineers during the fourth quarter of the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Round 1 TRADE BACK with Pittsburgh (possible if Star Lotulelei is still available at #13) – Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse – After losing Revis, the Jets are going to have to do something to get their fans excited for the future. There’s no way they don’t use one of the extra first rounders on a QB to win the job from Sanchez. It seems like Nassib is the QB the Jets like in this draft. With at least the Chiefs and Eagles also high on him, the Jets will most likely have to execute a mid-late 1st rounder for him. Trading back for a potential franchise QB is risky but feels a lot nicer than trading up for one, especially if you’re a team with as many needs as the Jets. If the Jets can pull off Ansah, Nassib and an extra 2nd rounder, it would be an A+ of a first day at the NFL Draft.

Jan 7, 2013; Miami, FL, USA; Notre Dame Fighting Irish tight end Tyler Eifert (80) catches a pass defended by Alabama Crimson Tide defensive back Dee Milliner (28) during the first half of the 2013 BCS Championship game at Sun Life Stadium. Elfert was ruled out of bounds on the play. Mandatory Credit: Eileen Blass-USA TODAY Sports

Round 2 – Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame – Tyler Eifert, the best tight end in the draft can step in and fill Dustin Keller’s void immediately. He was a leader and the #1 offensive weapon on a Notre Dame offense that marched into the National Championship. He lined up at both TE and WR and is the type of player that can help spark some life into a Jets offense that has been in a coma for a few years. If the Jets can trade back for an athlete like this AND pick up an extra 2nd rounder, it will be a big win for this team.

Oct 27, 2012; Chapel Hill, NC, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels running back Giovani Bernard (26) returns a punt for the winning touchdown with 13 second to play in the fourth quarter.
Round 2 – (from Pittsburgh) Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina – Regarded as one of the top running backs in this class, Bernard is a safe high floor choice for a running back to work into a high ceiling stable of young running backs in Goodson, Powell and McKnight. Some consider Bernard to be 1st round talent, he definitely has the potential to come in and immediately prove to be New York’s next franchise running back.

Dec 1, 2012; Waco, TX, USA; Baylor Bears senior wide receiver Terrance Williams (2) takes the field before the game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys at Floyd Casey Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Round 3 – Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor – A tall outside receiver who happened to be the most productive wide out in college football last year, Terrance Williams is the potential #1 WR the Jets have been searching for. In my opinion, he’s the Jarvis Jones of this receiver class; probably one of the best on tape and production wise, but was not a top performer in workouts. This is an easy way for a prospect to become be under valued. These are the types of players the Jets need to be looking for on the 2nd day of the draft.

Sep 24, 2011; Morgantown, WV, USA; LSU Tigers cornerback Tyrann Mathieu (7) against the West Virginia Mountaineers at Mountaineer Field. Mandatory Credit: Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Round 4 – Tyrann Mathieu, CB, LSU – The Jets are in a place to take a risk and bring a new headline grabbing player into New York City. Tyrann Mathieu only needs to play in the nickel for the Jets which he should be ready to step in and do immediately, being that that position was exactly what he was famous for holding down at his time at LSU. Will he grow to be a #1 CB in the NFL? Hopefully, but either way he helps out the Jets defense out and completes the cornerback depth as the nickel after Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson’s recent promotions. Not to mention, he seems like the type of guy who can be a great fit with a coach like Rex Ryan.

Jan 26, 2013; Mobile, AL, USA; Senior Bowl south squad offensive lineman Jordan Mills of Louisiana Tech against the Senior Bowl north squad during the second half of the Senior Bowl at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The South squad defeated the North squad 21-16. Mandatory Credit: Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Round 5 – Jordan Mills, RT/G, LA Tech – He played his entire college career as a right tackle and was dominant in the position for Louisiana Tech, which had the 5th most effective offense in the nation last year (only behind Baylor, Texas A&M, Oregon and Oklahoma State). Scouts also project that he can be a good guard in the NFL. This is a great use of a 5th rounder for the Jets; at the best they get the guard they need that can plug in and start right away, at worst they have an experienced right tackle (most will be college Left Tackles converting for their NFL rookie years) to rotate in with Austin Howard who sometimes finds himself with too much on his plate. Win-win situation for the Jets offensive line.

Feb 24, 2013; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Michigan Wolverines wide receiver Denard Robinson makes a catch during the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Round 6 – Denard Robinson, WR/RB/KR/Wildcat QB, Michigan – The Jets finally find their replacement to Brad Smith early in the 6th round in Denard Robinson. Robinson is a wild card and has lots of raw athletic talent that can be developed as a WR, RB, Kick Returner and most of all, wildcat QB. He’s good sleeper pick that could add an extra dimension to the Jets offense and has the popularity to help bring its character back. Denard is another headline grabbing player who will help a team sell tickets and draw fans out whether or not he makes an immediate impact on the team, so that’s always another plus.

Nov 10, 2012; Raleigh, NC, USA; Wake Forest Demon Deacons wide receiver Brandon Terry (86) defends after North Carolina State Wolfpack safety Brandan Bishop (30) made the successful interception during the first half at Carter-Finley Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mark Dolejs-USA TODAY Sports

Round 7 – Brandon Bishop, S, NC State – 7th Round equals sleeper round. The sleeper pick I like is NC State safety Brandon Bishop. It’d be nice to see a player like him come in and try to win one of the wide open safety spot on the Jets. He was a second team all-ACC selection this year, Brandon Bishop is buried in this year’s deep deep safety class but has shown on tape that he has the potential to be a solid contributor at safety in the NFL. Started 8 games as a true freshman for the Wolfpack and totaled 32 tackles (17 solo and 1 TFL) and broke up 4 passes making the All-Freshman Team. He became the solid starter at safety for the rest of his career. In his senior season he totaled in 103 tackles (71 solo, 3 TFLs), intercepted 3 passes and broke up 7 more. He is a sleeper who is overlooked because of a mediocre 40 time and could step into camp fired up to make an immediate impact in the NFL.

With the draft soon approaching and many teams looking for upgrades or depth at the receiver position, this is the year to do so. Below are my favorite 5 receivers entering the draft. This was tough and I’d like to say off the bat that I think Baylor’s Terrence Williams, Texas A&M’s Ryan Swope, Tennessee’s Justin Hunter and USC’s Robert Woods are all my honorable mentions. I will also give you my choice for the best fit based on team needs, player stock (according to rankings from ESPN and NFL.com) and draft position.

1.Tavon Austin, West Virginia

December 29, 2012; Bronx, NY, USA; West Virginia Mountaineers wide receiver Tavon Austin (1) is tackled by Syracuse Orange cornerback Wayne Morgan (2) during the third quarter of the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

SENIOR:1287 yds, 12tds,

JUNIOR:1185yds, 8tds

SOPHOMORE: 787 yards, 8tds

FRESHMAN: 151 yards, 1 td

Best Potential Fit: St. Louis Rams(probably will need to trade up)

The most versatile and high potential receiver in the draft, Tavon Austin has it all. He can come in and be a Wes Welker or Ty Hilton prototype slot receiver, a kick returner or become a Percy Harvin/Desean Jackson type outside guy who can run amazing reverses as well as burn defenders with his blazing speed. At best you get a full package skill position player here, at worst you get a great Ted Ginn like kick returner/#2 WR. The odds are in Austin’s favor if you ask me.

2. Keenan Allen, California

September 8, 2012; Berkeley, CA, USA; California Golden Bears wide receiver Keenan Allen (21) scores a touchdown ahead of Southern Utah Thunderbirds defensive back Tyree Mills (6) during the fourth quarter at Memorial Stadium.
SENIOR: 737 yards, 6tds,

JUNIOR: 1343 yards, 6tds,

SOPHOMORE: 496 yards 5tds

Best Potential Fit: Minnesota Vikings(can potentially fall to them)

A great, productive and established receiver from Cal who broke Desean Jackson’s career reception record for the Golden Bears. Any team looking for a high ceiling and already skilled hands guy, Keenan Allen is the move.

3. Cordarrelle Patterson, Tennessee

Nov 10, 2012; Knoxville, TN, USA; Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson (84) scores a touchdown against the Missouri Tigers during the first half at Neyland Stadium.
JUNIOR YEAR: 778 yards, 5tds

Best Potential Fit: San Diego Chargers (can potentially fall to them)

Has great athleticism and a prototypical build of an NFL receiver. Hasn’t quite proved himself on tape with the level of success in his numbers seen from WRs like Deandre Hopkins, Tavon Austin, or Keenan Allen. Probably is someone who can use another year of school but has the measurables to potentially become the best receiver of the class under the right coach.

4. DeAndre Hopkins, Clemson

January 4, 2012; Miami Gardens, FL, USA; Clemson Tigers wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins (6) scores a touchdown after eluding the tackle of West Virginia Mountaineers defensive back Ishmael Banks (34) late in the fourth quarter in the 2012 Orange Bowl at Sun Life Stadium.

SENIOR YEAR: 1405 yards, 18tds

JUNIOR YEAR: 961 yards, 5tds

SOPHOMORE YEAR: 626 yards, 4tds

Best Potential Fit: Houston Texans (Can potentially fall to them)

Great production and stepped in to fill Sammy Watkins’ void when his team needed him to. Was the only player ever in the ACC to record 50+ receptions his freshman and sophomore years. Hopkins has potential to be a top #1 WR in the NFL who has the skills now to definitely come in as a possible #1 or a great #2 threat. We saw during his career in Clemson that he’s a guy you can count on to step in if need be.

5. Quinton Patton, La Tech

SENIOR YEAR: 1392 yards, 13 td

JUNIOR YEAR: 1202 yards, 11 td

Best Potential Fit: Pittsburgh Steelers (Can trade back in the first or up in the 2nd)

May be the value of the draft because of going to a mid major school. Quinton Patton was the weapon on his team that made them a cut above their competition. He’s proven that he can step up to greater competition during his game against a tough SEC foe in Texas A&M where he caught 21 passes for 233 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Louis Rams (From Redskins) – John Cyprien, S, FIU – The Rams fill in their need at safety here with John Cyprien, a standout free safety from Florida International, where he currently holds the record for all time leading tackles. This is a guy who may be unfairly overlooked because of his school but will put out some major numbers to whatever team drafting him. It’s a homerun hit for a team like the Rams who are only a stand out safety away from fielding a complete defense with no other glaring needs

23. Minnesota Vikings – Keenan Allen, WR California – The Vikings use this opportunity to upgrade their 2012 WR situation. It’s unfortunate they lost Percy Harvin, but to be able to sign Greg Jennings AND be able to draft a playmaking receiver like Keenan Allen, elevates their offense more than if they had stayed put with Harvin. Plus, it’ll be nice for Minnesota to have a receiver on the team that won’t miss games due to migraines that occur when the team makes him stop smoking pot for league drug tests.

24. Indianapolis Colts – Damontre Moore, DE/OLB, Texas A&M – The Colts get a highly heralded pass rusher way down in the draft. Damontre, originally thought of to be a top 5 pick, was one of the best pass rushers in the nation last year at A&M. A flimsy combine and decent pro day made his draft stock take a bit of a free fall. The Colts picks him up here, hoping his performance in Indianapolis is better the second time he comes to town

25. Minnesota Vikings (from Seattle Seahawks) – Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia – Minnesota has 2 picks and can take a shot at the quarterback everyone has been talking about. This gives Christian Ponder much needed competition at the least and a new franchise quarterback at the most. At this point given every team’s situation, Geno makes the most sense in Minnesota if Jacksonville isn’t comfortable enough to reach for him with the #2 overall pick.

Austin like McClustor can also take a few snaps at the RB position in certain packages giving Daryl Richardson a spell or two (but I’m sure the Rams will find another RB that can spell Richardson full time). He’s the full package, or at least appears to be. We’ll see come September if Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey made Geno or if it’s the other way around.

17. Pittsburgh Steelers – Johnathan Hankins, NT, Ohio State – The Steelers’ whole defense is getting old, they need to start going position by position. Not only is Hankins one of the best prospects on the board here, but he’s also a true nose tackle which is very rare and hard to find. If he pans out the way everyone thinks, he can be the perfect first block in the rebuilding of the Steelers.

18. Dallas Cowboys – Kenny Vaccarro, S, Texas – The Cowboys love making sexy picks. This year they can fill their biggest need doing it. They take Kenny Vaccaro, one of the hottest, most talked about players in this year’s draft. Kenny doesn’t travel far and keeps his in state Longhorn fanbase by being picked 18th overall by the Dallas Cowboys

19. New York Giants – Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia The Giants get the pick of the inside linebacker litter here at #19. It’s a tough choice, between Alec Ogletree, the long time #1 ILB prospect in this year’s draft and Kansas State’s Arthur Brown. Both had great seasons leading top 10 ranked defenses to be conference championship contenders. Alec Ogletree carries a little more liability with minor injuries and off field issues but is clearly the most exciting ILB in the draft this year, putting up numbers that still outshine other players at his position despite playing 10 games. Without his off field drama, I’d think Alec would be top 15 maybe even a top 10 pick. The Giants have trust in their coaching staff to keep this kid on track and pick him up with the 19th overall pick.

20. Chicago Bears – Arthur Brown, ILB, Kansas State
Guess who else needs an inside linebacker and has a great prospect on the board? That’s right. The Bears. Arthur Brown seems to be a great replacement for Urlacher. Both were said to be undersized for their position (Arthur Brown’s biggest knock). Chicago understands that size isn’t everything and that it’s possible to play bigger than you actually are. What better place for Arthur Brown to step in immediately in the shoes of a great player with similar criticisms and prove the critics wrong?

The Chiefs have been busy this off-season and have made vast improvements to their team for next year. They temporarily solved their QB problem in the signing of Alex Smith. They also now may have one of the most talented defensive backfield in football adding Sean Smith and Dunta Robinson to a secondary that already bolsters a solid Brandon Flowers at the #1 CB spot. Chiefs’ defense seems to be in great shape with Eric Berry, their CBs and a strong defensive line. The Chiefs can draft a linebacker, but should focus on building a solid offense with this draft. The Chiefs need run and pass protection above everything, they must keep Jamaal Charles and Alex Smith safe and productive this season, which is why they likely pickup an offensive lineman with pick #1. The Chiefs have a play-maker in Dwayne Bowe, but that’s all they really have as a weapon for Alex Smith right now.

Feb 21, 2013; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Texas A

Round 1 – Luke Joeckel, T, Texas A&M- We all can assume they use this pick on an offensive tackle. The popular pick here would be Joeckel but some people argue that the Chiefs may take Central Michigan’s Eric Fisher. I say Joeckel is safer, we’ve seen him on tape against numerous 1st round defenders in this class and know exactly what we’re getting. Eric Fisher will probably be good too and may even have a higher ceiling but the Chiefs need to make sure to get it right this time.

Feb 23, 2013; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Notre Dame Fighting Irish tight end Tyler Eiffert runs the 40 yard dash during the 2013 NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Round 2 – Tyler Eiffert, TE, Notre Dame – Does any team need an early round tight end more than the Chiefs? Since the Bears acquired Martellus Bennett, I can’t think of one (maybe Tennessee? – they have many other needs though). Eiffert can be a good grab at the top of round 2 for the Chiefs, giving them not only some more help blocking but also potentially becoming the 2nd playmaking receiver that Kansas City has been searching for for the last few years. The Chiefs may get lucky and see Eiffert drop just due to teams having more pressing needs in round 1.

Nov 23, 2012; Fayetteville, AR, USA; Arkansas Razorbacks wide receiver Cobi Hamilton (11) makes a catch ahead of Louisiana State Tigers cornerback Tharold Simon (24) during the second half at Donald W. Reynolds Stadium. LSU defeated Arkansas 20-13. Mandatory Credit: Beth Hall-USA TODAY Sports

Sleeper – Cobi Hamilton, WR, Arkansas – The brightest spot on a dismal Arkansas team, Hamilton may just be who Kansas City is looking for to take pressure off Bowe. He’s a big bodied receiver at 6’3 209, who can complement the athletic, speedy Bowe well. He has over 1,300 yards receiving, was a 3rd team all-american and still is only being projected as a 5th rounder. Cobi Hamilton can very well turn out to be the gem of this draft. Paired with Bowe, a playmaking tight end in Eiffert and Baldwin and McClustor splitting slot duties, the Chiefs all the sudden seem to have some serious firepower for newcomer, Alex Smith

Man oh man, the Jets have had a rough free agency. Instead of adding a few key under the radar pieces, they managed to lose 1 of 2 proven talents on their offense, Dustin Keller. Now, we can add TE to the many needs of the Jets. Let’s count them: OLB, S, QB, TE, WR, OL, RB. Those are just the glaring needs, the Jets also could use some padding at nose tackle after losing Pouha. The big question is, will the Jets be able to salvage a decent team by having a great draft? It’s time for new GM John Idzik to roll up his sleeves. At this point, I wouldn’t touch the unrecoverable situation at quarterback in the draft, since next year’s class will be about ten times better than the 2013 QB class. Plus with the right pieces, Sanchez, Garrard or whoever wins the starting role could win games as a game manager. If it were me stepping in right now, here’s what I’d do come April:

Mar 21, 2013; Athens, GA, USA; Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Jarvis Jones participates in drills during Georgia pro day at the University of Georgia.
ROUND 1: (TRADE DOWN with the Rams – who may want to trade up for Tavon Austin) Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia – The Jets need to find a trade partner to gain an extra 2nd rounder to help rebuild this team. Jarvis Jones shows lots of promise on tape but a decent pro day and a combine no show will have him slip out of the top 10. It would be a HUGE win if the Jets can find a way to trade down in the 1st round for an extra 2nd rounder and still pick up one of the following: Ziggy Ansah, Jarvis Jones, or Kiki Mingo. I’d be very surprised if Ansah slipped out of the top 10 but stranger things have happened.

Oct 13, 2012; Shreveport, LA, USA; Louisiana Tech Bulldogs wide receiver Quinton Patton (4) catches a touchdown over Texas A

ROUND 2: Quinton Patton – WR, La Tech – A monster at receiver who probably is a first round value who will go in round 2. Against Texas A&M’s elite SEC defense, Patton racked in 244 yards and 4 TDs almost carrying his team to a big upset victory over the Aggies. That’s enough to impress this Aggie fan. Just ask Marques Colston, TY Hilton and Victor Cruz, don’t sleep on small school receivers!

Jan 26, 2013; Mobile, AL, USA; Senior Bowl south squad defensive back Bacarri Rambo of Georgia (18) returns an interception against the Senior Bowl north squad during the first half of the Senior Bowl at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

ROUND 2: (from Rams in theoretical trade down)- Bacarri Rambo, S, Georgia – A player who would be a first rounder but because of character issues got knocked down to a 2nd day grab. I think Rambo may be the Janoris Jenkins of this year’s draft and teams know that. Many will try to wait until the beginning of the 3rd, so if you want and need this dynamic playmaker at safety, you may have to spend a mid-late second on him

Jan 7, 2013; Miami, FL, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban and offensive linesman Barrett Jones (75) and quarterback A.J.
Round 3: – Barrett Jones, OL, Alabama – If the Jets don’t want to spend an early pick on a safe offensive lineman, they could use a utility blocker in Barrett Jones. He’s played G, T and C and could immediately step in and fill the glaring need the Jets have at guard. If Mangold has anymore injury issues this season, he can also fill in at center, the Jets need a player like this to at least add to their depth of their offensive line

October 20, 2012; Gainesville FL, USA; South Carolina Gamecocks running back Marcus Lattimore (21) stretches prior to the game against the Florida Gators at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Round 4: Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina – This pick is like Rambo in that every team kinda wants to take a chance on Lattimore. But he still needs some more time to recover from his gruesome injury. The fact that it was his 2nd injury keeps him in the 3-4th round range. A team desperate for a running back like the Packers may throw a late 3rd rounder for him, but I think the majority of teams will look for him in the 4th and think of him as a potential 2014 starter. If he can come into the league and stay healthy, it’d be a HUGE splash because without injury issues, Lattimore is the best running back prospect in the 2013 class. Either way, he would have an underrated Mike Goodson and Bilal Powell to take the pressure off of him

Sep 8, 2012; Little Rock, AR, USA; Arkansas Razorbacks tight end Chris Gragg (80) holds the ball up after a catch during the game against the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks at War Memorial Stadium.
Round 5: Chris Gragg, TE, Arkansas – The Jets all the sudden need help at tight end, Chris Gragg was one of the most athletic at the combine and can come in and be an effective pass catching tight end with the right opportunity

Jan 26, 2013; Mobile, AL, USA; Senior Bowl north squad offensive lineman Ricky Wagner of Wisconsin (58) against the Senior Bowl south squad during the first half of the Senior Bowl at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Round 6: Ricky Wagner, OT, Wisconsin – When in doubt grab a Wisconsin lineman off the board. Ricky started as a left tackle for the Badgers but can probably step in right away on the right side for teams. He could either be a great rotational player with Howard or if he surprises, can take on a full time role on the Jets’ offensive line.

November 12, 2011; Athens, GA, USA; Auburn Tigers tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen (43) scores a touchdown under Georgia Bulldogs safety Shawn Williams (36) during the first quarter at Sanford Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Round 7: Philip Lutzenkirchen, TE, Auburn – He’s a big prototypical NFL sized tight end who holds the record for touchdown receptions for a tight end for the Tigers. He’s a big red zone target almost unblockable by a single defender for short yardage, also great in pass protection. The Jets can afford their 7th in exchange for getting Lutzenkirchen into their tight end competition.

The St Louis Rams filled a lot of holes in last years draft pretty successfully. With the signings of Jared Cook and Jake Long, Sam Bradford should at least have some protection and a big target in 2013. If they can use this draft to get him another weapon who can come in and make an impact immediately, they can become a dangerous team this year. The Rams defense was a much improved unit in 2012 with the great rookie additions of Michael Brockers and Janoris Jenkins. However, they lost their starting safeties and might look to replace them in the early rounds of the draft. In regards to polishing off their remaining holes with immediate playmakers this spring, the Rams are sitting really pretty with 2 first round picks.

Feb 24, 2013; Indianapolis, IN, USA; West Virginia Mountaineers wide receiver Tavon Austin runs the 40 yard dash during the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Round 1 – Tavon Austin, WR, WVU – I would be surprised if Tavon Austin is not at the top of the Rams draft board. He’s one of the most versatile receivers in the draft this year and can be used at both WR, slot receiver, the wildcat and in some situations even running back. Imagine Dexter McClustor versatility with Percy Harvin speed and you have Tavon Austin. Sam Bradford doesn’t just get a weapon but gets a nice new shiny swiss army knife in Austin because of the multiple ways he can be used.

Jan 26, 2013; Mobile, AL, USA; Senior Bowl north squad defensive back Jonathan Cyprien of Florida International (37) prior to kickoff of a game against the Senior Bowl south squad at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Round 1 – John Cyprien, FS, FIU – If the Rams just miss Kenny Vaccaro here, it’s no biggie because of John Cyprien, a small school safety with big time potential. A starter even as a true freshman Cyprien earned all-conference selections each of his 3 years at Florida International. After an impressive senior bowl showing, some scouts even have Cyprien rated above Kenny Vaccaro. This will be quite a splash for the Rams, especially if he can make an immediate impact like his former teammate, TY Hilton.

The Carolina Panthers are on the path to greatness, with playmakers emerging in various different positions. They have Cam Newton leading a pair of great running backs in Stewart and Williams, an aging but still quite effective Steve Smith and a defense with a strong young cornerstone in Luke Kuechly. The Panthers also have some talent at defensive end in Charles Johnson and retained Captain Munnerlyn at CB. Carolina should focus on solidifying their defensive front with a solid defensive tackle. A wide receiver who could eventually take over for Steve Smith would also be really nice.

November 3, 2012; Salt Lake City, UT, USA; Utah Utes defensive tackle Star Lotulelei (92) chases Washington State Cougars quarterback Jeff Tuel (10) during the first half at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

Round 1 – Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah – If any team should trade up for a specific player it’s Carolina for a playmaking defensive tackle like Star Lotulelei. He’s been one of the hottest prospects since we started talking about the draft. With the sudden emergence of Shariff Floyd and speculated health problems, Star Lotulelei may actually be snagable at #14 (but unlikely). The trade up would be worth giving Kuechly that support on the defensive front and would fill Panther’s biggest position of need with one of the biggest potential players in the NFL Draft. Star Lotulelei will not only fufill a need, but as his name hints, can be a star on the defensive side of the ball in Carolina.

Dec 1, 2012; Waco, TX, USA; Baylor Bears wide receiver Terrance Williams (2) makes a catch in front of Oklahoma State Cowboys cornerback Justin Gilbert (4) during the game at Floyd Casey Stadium.
Round 2 – Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor – A high production young WR is exactly what the Panthers need to take if given the opportunity. Terrance Williams led the nation in receiving yards his last year and showed that he could put up high numbers with two different types of QBs in RG3 and Nick Florence. Cam may be a little reminiscent of RG3 for Williams and can have him hit the ground running his rookie season. Of the 2nd round receivers, I can see this red zone threat catching the most touchdowns from Cam Newton.

The Giants (along with all the NFC East teams) are weird in that they always look pretty good on paper but then will have a few games a season that leaves their fans scratching their heads in confusion. They’re a team that generally has no blatant needs but always has a few positions that could use upgrades and strengthening. This year, those positions are in their defensive secondary, offensive line (including tight end) and linebacker spots. Look for the Giants to address these needs in this year’s NFL draft.

January 01, 2013; Orlando, FL, USA; Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback Taylor Martinez (3) is sacked by Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Alec Ogletree (9) during the second half of the Capital One bowl at The Citrus Bowl. Georgia defeated Nebraska 45-31. Mandatory Credit: Brad Barr-USA TODAY Sports

Round 1 – Alec Ogletree, MLB, Georgia – After releasing the decent Chase Blackburn, look for the Giants to fill the ILB (which has been a weak spot in their defense since Antonio Pierce left) in a big way. Alec Ogletree is by far the best inside linebacker in the draft this year and may also be the best player overall on the board by the time the Giants make their pick. He played safety in his freshman year at Georgia which translates to a lightning fast inside linebacker. As long as he can focus, stay out of trouble and stay on the field, he’s a steal for the G-Men. If he’s not available, look for the Giants to look at Notre Dame TE, Tyler Eiffert to fill in for vacant Martellus Bennett

Round 2 – Eric Reid, FS, LSU – A standout safety originally thought to be a first round pick. The Giants lost Kenny Phillips in free agency and the best player on the board in round 2 will likely be a safety, WR or HB and the Giants are pretty set with Cruz, Nicks, Brown and Wilson. The only reason a player like Reid would fall to the Giants here is because of the depth at safety this year not only in the draft, but also free agency. The Giants had very bad luck with the last LSU standout safety they drafted, but my gut tells me Eric Reid’s career will have a considerably happier ending.

Late Round Sleeper Pick – Barrett Jones, G/C, Alabama – The Giants bolster their line by adding maybe the most versatile offensive lineman in the draft, Barrett Jones. Jones has had experience playing and doing well at the center, guard and even left tackle spots on the Crimson Tide offensive line. The Giants need to upgrade and get a younger offensive line on all fronts, what better way to start than with a player who could move around and play any spot on it?

The Colts are in a great position to return to dominating their division. Andrew Luck and co got to playoffs with a team with many holes. The Colts need to focus on building their defense. Gaining a feature back that can be an 1,000+ yards/season would also be ideal being that the Colts haven’t had that since Joseph Addai’s second year in the league.

Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Round 1: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama– The Colts can really use a back like Eddie Lacy to show support to Andrew Luck. Eddie Lacy is a strong, smart back who is used to winning on the collegiate level (2x national champion, All-SEC 1st team RB in 2012). The top rated running back in the draft and the only one whose across the board expected to go first round. He is exactly what the Colts have been looking for in their backfield the past few years and will likely be available for them in the for them as long as Cincinatti doesn’t snag him first.

Late Round Sleeper: Bacarri Rambo, S, Georgia – Every year there are great players with “character concerns” that dramatically plummet their draft stock (see Janoris Jenkins). This year, that is likely to happen to Georgia safety Bacarri Rambo who was suspended the first 2 games of his senior season for “accidentally” ingesting pot brownies. We’ve all been there right? However, the man is a playmaker making 73 tackles and causing 6 turnovers (3 INTs, 3 FFs) in the 10 games he played in 2012. The year before, he made 8 interceptions, was named an AP All American and was on the All-SEC first team defense. Any other year even with the character concerns, a player like this should go in round 2 at the latest. This year is a bad year for safeties because of the enormous supply of both free agents and the strong safety class headlined by Texas’ Kenny Vaccaro and Florida’s Matt Elam. Smarter teams like the Colts may wait until day 2 to snag a gem like Rambo who may even turn out to be the crown jewel of this safety class.
