Mike Wallace’s father told the media that his son was offered $76 million by the Minnesota Vikings. If this were true it would mean that Mike Wallace turned down more money to play for the Miami Dolphins. His deal with the Dolphins was a 5 year $60 million deal, $16 million less than the Vikes offer.

“In free agency, with so many great guys, when you get the prize deal, it’s always a good feeling,” Wallace told the USA Today, via the Green Bay Press-Gazette. “I just wanted to be happy. Money isn’t everything. A lot of people last year, when I held out in Pittsburgh, took it the wrong way, felt like I was just being greedy.”

But money isn’t why he chose the Dolphins, he chose Miami to get a shot at rings and Pro Bowls.

“I performed so well for so long, I just wanted to be well compensated,” he said. “I feel I got a bad rep. Free agency paid off for me. But it was bittersweet. The money is not all I’m in it for. I want to be a great player – win Super Bowls, go to Pro Bowls continuously.”

He certainly will make Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill happy, but the Super Bowl rings might a stretch.

What’s not to love about Miami? The weather is incredible, the city is one of the best in the country, and its basketball team has been to three straight NBA Finals. But this year, there is something different – the football team that calls Miami home is on the rise.

The Miami Dolphins arguably made the biggest splash in free agency this offseason, signing big-name players such as receiver Mike Wallace, cornerback Brent Grimes, and linebacker Danelle Ellerbe. So, do these signings alone make Miami the new favorite in the AFC East?

“Ahem, Rishi, I think you forgot about New England?” I did not. As much as some hate to recognize it, New England’s so-called dynasty of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady is declining. Losing Wes Welker certainly helps Miami’s cause.

But just the free agent signings alone don’t give Miami a better chance to win their division, but that, along with player development and a strong incoming draft class, do.

The key to success in 2013 is based on the right shoulder of quarterback Ryan Tannehill. His development as a passer and chemistry with new and returning receivers can make or break Miami’s season.

Tannehill was an average quarterback who showed flashes of excellence in 2012 with a below-satisfactory receiving corps. Now, Tannehill should be able to stretch the field with newcomer Mike Wallace. This season, Tannehill can not only take his team to the playoffs, but also prove that he was worthy of a top 10 pick.

Wallace has the capability of taking the top off a defense any given Sunday. Although experts may question his consistency, I believe he will evolve into a solid number 1 target for Tannehill.

A common cliché of football is the saying that “Defense Wins Championships.” In 2013, Miami’s defense could help them secure a division title.

The addition of Brent Grimes reinforces the secondary. Although he is coming off an Achilles’ tear, he should be able to step in right away as a starting corner and produce.

Danelle Ellerbe is an underrated player at the linebacker position, having been overshadowed by Ray Lewis in Baltimore. He should only improve, and expect him to be a tackling machine. He is more than a viable replacement for Karlos Dansby.

I especially liked the aggressive move to trade up to No. 3 overall and select Dion Jordan to play opposite Cameron Wake on what now looks like a menacing defensive line. Jordan should contribute right away alongside Wake.

Miami’s defense looks legitimate. So does the team. They will surpass the Bills and Jets in the division, but their one obstacle is the Patriots. On paper, New England seems to be the better team. On paper. On the field could be a different story.

Watch out, New England.

In under 100 days the Denver Broncos and the Baltimore Ravens will kick off the NFL regular season in Denver Colorado. If you want to break it up even more the first training camps usually open in late July(2 months), the first preseason game is between the Miami Dolphins and the Dallas Cowboys in the Hall of Fame Game on August 4th(little over 2 months) and Madden NFL 25 is released on August 27th. Considering all this information I figured it was about time to start with a few prediction articles and why not start with predicting a few breakout players for the upcoming season?

David Wilson – He was drafted in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft to one day be the starter for the Giants. With the departure of Ahmad Bradshaw and only Andre Brown to compete with, the stage is set for the speedy Wilson to shine. Bradshaw was let go in part due to the confidence the club has in Wilson after he showed glimpses of the talent that made him worthy of a 1st round pick. Wilson’s season was highlighted by his 13 rush 100 yard performance he had against the Saints in week 14. It will be interesting to see if the Giants continue to use Wilson as a returner where he was very productive. Wilson was much more sure handed after his 1st game scare against the Cowboys where he lost the rock and found the Tom Coughlin doghouse.

Sept. 16, 2012; Miami, FL, USA; Miami Dolphins running back Lamar Miller (26) runs for a touchdown during the fourth quarter against the Oakland Raiders at Sun Life Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Lamar Miller – All the talk in the recent weeks has been about Reggie Bush and the Detroit Lions and rightfully so as Bush finds himself in a high octane offense that could be scary good. But I wouldn’t overlook Lamar Miller stepping into the role left by Bush in Miami. Miller is another speedster who is more of a north south type of runner. With 51 carries in 2012 he averaged 4.9 yards per carry and he is said to be aiming for 1,500 yards this season at a 5 yard per carry clip.

Emmanuel Sanders – This isn’t a shot in the dark, this is about as close to a sure thing as you will find when it comes to guys stepping into a new starting role and shining. Sanders is stepping into the vacancy left by Mike Wallace in the Pittsburgh Steelers offense. He will be the number 2 receiver behind Antonio Brown in a productive offense led by playmaking Big Ben. As a restricted free agent he was rumored to be offered by numerous teams including the New England Patriots (could you imagine Sanders in that offense?). By the end of the season Emmanuel Sanders should be a household name for NFL fans.

December 23, 2012; Pittsburgh, PA, USA; Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders (88) reacts after making pass reception for a first down against the Cincinnati Bengals during the third quarter at Heinz Field. The Cincinnati Bengals won 13-10. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Aaron Dobson, WR, New England Patriots – Danny Amendola has fantasy geeks everywhere drooling over his potential in the pass happy New England offense, but the guy starting opposite Amendola is the guy with the highest ceiling. With speed to burn and the size to fight off the growing corners across the league he is set to see an insane amount of targets from Tom Brady. The home paper has him slotted as the starting X receiver and if you want to know what that means in terms of targets just look at what Brandon Lloyd received last year in the same spot.

September 4, 2011; Morgantown,WV, USA: Marshall Thundering Herd wide receiver Aaron Dobson (3) runs the ball against the West Virginia Mountaineers during the second quarter at Milan Puskar Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-USPRESSWIRE

Ben Tate, RB, Houston Texans – This is my long shot. I know Arian Foster is there and he is a pro-bowler. I don’t know about you but I have a hard time thinking of the Texans without thinking of Foster. Being a star at running back in the NFL comes with the ware and tare of the carries of multiple seasons. Over the last 3 seasons Foster has averaged over 300 carries and has seen his yards per game average steadily drop from 101 to a low of 88 last season. Foster has been a stud but any running back not named Adrian Peterson is bound to eventually slow down and/or get hurt from that type of mileage. Ben Tate is waiting in the wings to take over for Foster and has the ability to breakout and become the marquee back in Houston. With Houston you have to keep in mind that they run the same zone running scheme made popular by Mike Shanahan. Kubiak is a Shanahan disciple and has had great success with this scheme in Houston.

Dec 16, 2012; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Texans running back Ben Tate (44) runs the ball against the Indianapolis Colts in the second quarter at Reliant Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

So there you go, a few potential breakout players for the upcoming season. I did my best to not use the obvious rookies like Tavon Austin or Montee Ball. I wanted to hit on a few players that might have been forgotten or overlooked. What player on your favorite team is primed for a breakout?

As a Jets fan, I often found myself pondering reasons for optimism for the NY Jets this year and what they would need to win their division. Earlier this week I wrote part 1 which talks about the Jets additions that will immediately help reach that goal. Then I wrote part 2 which was more about the team’s remaining holes and weaknesses. It is time for the last and perhaps most important reason why the Jets have a shot at the division next year: an analysis on the competition.

Reason #5: The AFC East is a weak and winnable division this year

Let’s take this opportunity to look at all the teams in the AFC East as they stand now:

New York Jets

Strengths: Defensive Line, Cornerbacks, Offensive Line, Defensive Coaching, QB Coaching

Biggest Holes: Quarterback

Also Needs To Step Up: Safeties, Wide Receivers, Pass Rush

May 10, 2013; Florham Park, NJ, USA; New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith (7) talks with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg (right) during New York Jets rookie minicamp at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Let’s assume all before mentioned reasons in Part 1 and Part 2 of these articles happen as I predict they could. We’re looking at a Jets team with a reupholstered offensive line with the depth to finally be able to stay fresh throughout the season. We also have a new QB in Geno Smith, who on paper, looks like he should have somewhere between a Ryan Tannehill and Matt Ryan rookie season depending on the mentality he comes into camp with. We know one thing; he’ll have good offensive line support. That is probably the most quintincential thing a rookie QB needs for his first impression in the NFL. It will strongly benefit his mental growth and composure. Rex Ryan got it right this season and hired Marty Mornhingweg a coach who has been a head coach before and can take on 90% of the teams offensive coaching responsibilities while Rex focuses on his specialty, the defense. Now the Jets lost Revis, but gained Sheldon Richardson and Dee Milliner. While most don’t see Sheldon’s pick being relevant to the Jets needs, you have to remember Rex’s value as a defensive coach. If a player is a top 4 overall player on his board, that’s something worth trusting. Coples was drafted in 2012 for his athleticism and versatility so this season is where he has to show it, as Rex moves him into the 3-4 outside linebacker role. Coples will be supported by Calvin Pace and a new free agency addition, Antwan Barnes, one of San Diego’s top pass rushers in 2011. The linebackers aren’t the strongest point, but they also aren’t a problem area in the defense. The Jets will surround them with an outstanding defensive line and cornerback group. If Rex can just coach the safeties up, this is one of the best defenses in the conference. The biggest piece IF in this Jets fan pipe dream is can Geno start by week 1 and can he approach the game and play like a 1st round pick, the more he can do that, the less pressure off the other areas of need for the team. This season basically rides on Geno Smith this year for the Jets.

Miami Dolphins:

Strengths: Wide Receivers, Defensive Line, Linebackers

Miami is my favorite to win the AFC East as it stands now, not the Patriots. They gained Mike Wallace who has carried the Steeler offense on his back the last few years. It helps that he really seems to be clicking with sophomore QB, Ryan Tannehill in camp. Miami’s big hole is their CB situation. They traded away Vontae Davis last year and let Sean Smith go to the Chiefs this offseason. They drafted Boise State’s Jamar Taylor in the 2nd round who seems like a good prospect, but they’re going to need either him or 3rd round pick, Will Davis to be good enough to start to begin to close up the cornerback hole in their defense. They look to have a very strong defensive line with the addition of Dion Jordan and a good linebacking corps with the addition of Phil Wheeler and Dannell Ellerbe. Miami’s defense as of right now is about where the Jets defense is personnel wise (maybe a bit below with a big question mark at CB), but the Jets have one big thing the Dolphins don’t, and that’s an off season of Rex Ryan’s defensive development. The Dolphins season rides on the play of the CBs, Offensive line and Ryan Tannehill.

New England Patriots:

Strengths: Quarterback, Runningbacks, Head Coach

Biggest Holes: Wide Receivers, Safety

Also Needs To Step Up: Health of Tight Ends, Defense as a Unit

Mandatory Credit: Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

The Pats are always a solid team with Tom Brady at QB. It’s the hardest position to find a standout to play and they have a future hall of famer. The only problem? Just about every position other QB and RB on the Pats will be weak this year. They had maybe one of the worst off seasons I’ve seen since following football, losing both Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd. To accommodate for these losses the Patriots picked up injury prone Danny Amendola who wasn’t resigned to the Rams and drafted some off the radar wide receiver prospects in Aaron Dobson (Marshall, round 2) and Josh Boyce (TCU, round 4). These seem to be decent prospects but I have a hard time seeing either of them replacing Brandon Lloyd. The Pats, however have 2 tremendous tight end weapons in Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski for Tom Brady to throw to, but both had injury problems this past season. Each of Tom Brady’s proven targets this year were injured for 5 or more games last season. That’s only issue #1. The Patriots defense has been a struggling unit for years. They started fixing it by adding Chandler Jones and Donta Hightower but it seems like the Patriots sidestepped on that defensive rebuilding project this off season, letting safety Patrick Chung go to Philadelphia without finding an adequate replacement. Most of their draft picks are unfamiliar names to most and don’t seem to be likely immediate contributors to the Patriot defense which makes the unit as a whole look like its taken a step back from last season’s mediocrity. If the defense can’t step up, it can mean critical games losses against the Jets and Dolphins, especially if Ryan Tannehill and Geno Smith are having good days. Yes, I know you can never count out Tom Brady; but let’s just keep in mind that a far less talented Jets team took a far more talented Patriots team into overtime in Foxboro last year.

Buffalo Bills:

Strengths: Runningbacks, Defensive Backfield

Biggest Holes: Quarterback, Defensive Line, Offensive Line

Also Needs To Step Up: Linebackers

May 10, 2013; Orchard Park, NY, USA; Buffalo Bills quarterback EJ Manuel (3) talks to the media following rookie minicamp at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

There’s not much to say here. The Bills seemed to be a good team on paper last year but did worse than the Jets. They lost their #2 and #3 receivers in free agency as well as a pair of guards. Their most note worthy pickup in free agency was Kevin Kolb. They did have a decent draft offensively getting Robert Woods, a very talented WR out of USC in the 2nd round. They should have a decent pair of outside receivers once they pair him with Stevie Johnson. They also drafted Marquise Goodwin in round 3, the quickest receiver in the draft. His big question is his lack of production and ability to beat defensive players in college. He’s a big question mark but can be a threat as a possible slot receiver or kick returner for the Bills. I’m not too high on EJ Manuel, he’s a much riskier prospect with an equal or lower ceiling than Geno Smith given his inferior production against weaker college competition. The Bills need for him to step up in an even bigger way than the Jets need Geno to just to be competitive at all this year. The Bills added a few linebackers both in free agency and in the draft, but it doesn’t look to be enough for them, unless their veterans can lead by stepping up this season.

One last BONUS reason: Good Timing with a strong NFC, weak AFC

Given all of the above info, the Jets can be in it, given the weakness of the AFC East this year. In fact, the whole AFC conference is pretty weak outside of the Broncos, Bengals and Texans. The NFC has a lot more teams that look good this season. Look at teams like the 49ers, Packers, Seahawks, Falcons, Saints, Giants, Bucs and Vikings. Even the lower tier NFC teams like the Rams, Lions and Panthers look like they’d be favorites against all but maybe 3 or 4 teams in the AFC. Having middle and upper level AFC teams like the Pats and Dolphins losing their NFC games will help level out the playing field and put more importance on the games where the Jets play them. The Jets can pull out this division if they can win against the Pats and Dolphins which could be doable in 2013 with work and focus.

Mike Wallace has followed LeBron James and taken his talents to south beach. And while he is leaving a two time Super Bowl champion quarterback to catch balls from a young one still looking to prove himself he isn’t stressed about it.

In fact, he thinks Ryan might be able to throw the ball further than Ben Roethlisberger.

“Both have strong arms. Ryan has a cannon, can really fling it,” Wallace told the Miami Herald. “Ryan may be able to throw the ball a little farther than Ben. Obviously, Ben is more experienced in game time experience. The way it’s going, it won’t take long for Ryan to be one of the great quarterbacks. I feel like we can make a lot of big plays.”

Mike Wallace has been pigeonholed as a one trick pony only capable of going deep, so a quarterback with a big arm is an essential.

“By the time we get to training camp, we’ll be fine. We throw two to three times after practice every day,” Wallace said. “I like this team. I like how everybody works. Not much talking, just grinding. That’s the way it should be. I’m one of the older guys on this team, so it’s different than being in Pittsburgh.”

With the #3 overall pick in the NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders have traded their pick to the Miami Dolphins who selected Dion Jordan out of Oregon.

I figured when the Miami Dolphins traded with the Oakland Raiders for the#3 pick, they would go after offensive tackle Lane Johnson. Miami needs protection for Ryan Tannehill, after losing Jake Long to the St. Louis Rams.

A defensive end who is a great edge rusher, will definitely help this defense who is lead by Cam Wake. An interesting decision by the Miami Dolphins, but I think Dion Jordan will do just fine in Miami.

Philadelphia Eagles are now on the clock.

The Miami Dolphins last season showed a little more fight in a 7-9 season (2nd place in the AFC East) only being blown out 4 of 16 games. It looks like Ryan Tannehill could indeed be the quarterback they are looking for, they just need to give him the weapons he needs in order for this team to continue to improve. Not that bad of a football team who traded their 2011 Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall to the Chicago Bears for a 3rd round (defensive end Oliver Vernon) draft pick . They lost Reggie Bush to the Detroit Lions, who rushed for nearly 1,000 yards and had 6 rushing touchdowns. Another key departure was tight end Anthony Fasano (Kansas City Chiefs) who lead the team in receiving touchdowns with 5.

This season they will start off with 2 games on the road then have a tough stretch of games having the Falcons, Saints, Ravens and Patriots all within 6 weeks.

Leading up to the Draft, the Miami Dolphins have been very active in the free agent market. They have already signed several new starters to the team, including WR Mike Wallace, ILB Dannell Ellerbe, and TE Dustin Keller. Because they had failed to retain standout LT Jake Long, they have been searching for a new starter to protect Ryan Tannehill’s blindside. Well, the search may be coming to a swift end, as the Sun-Sentinel is reporting they are discussing a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs for their star LT Brandon Albert. From that very source:

According to league sources, the Dolphins have had extensive talks with Kansas City about acquiring Branden Albert for a second-round pick, and team sources acknowledge a trade could be finalized before next Thursday’s NFL draft.

The Miami Dolphins have both a pair of 2nd round picks, as well as a pair of 3rd round picks thanks in part to trades conducted between the Dolphins, Colts, and Bears. On separate trades, they gained a 2nd round pick from the Indianapolis Colts for CB Vontae Davis, and a 3rd rounder from the Chicago Bears for WR Brandon Marshall. GM Jeff Ireland is showing he’s not afraid to use one of his top picks in the draft, if it means he can get a great deal for a player that fills an immediate need.

Brandon Albert, meanwhile, was tagged by the Chiefs earlier in the off-season. Despite his injury concerns, he is a very capable pass protector that has proven himself in shutting down some of the better pass-rushers available in today’s game. The Dolphins have been hopeful to at least add competition for Johnathan Martin at the LT position thanks to Jake Long’s departure to St. Louis on a 4-year deal. He, provided the deal works out, will certainly add competition if not an upgrade to that position.

Now this is interesting. The Miami Dolphins are set to work out Texas Longhorns safety Kenny Vaccaro, who is the best safety in the 2013 NFL Draft and has the ability to play at either strong safety or free safety, according to a source close to James Walker of ESPN’s AFC East blog. A workout with Vaccaro would have made more sense had the Dolphins not re-signed free safety Chris Clemons, but they were able to re-sign Clemons on a surprisingly cheap deal to keep a very good safety tandem intact with rising star Reshad Jones locked into the other spot.

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

The Dolphins hold the 12th pick in the draft, and Vaccaro is expected to be taken within the first 17 picks of the draft. This could be a smokescreen from the Dolphins in order to provoke teams into trading up; they likely want to make other teams feel less secure about their chances of nabbing Vaccaro from their spot. This draft is laced with talented safeties, though, so teams might not fall for the Dolphins bait (if this is indeed a motive for working out Vaccaro).

But the Dolphins could also be interested in Vaccaro anyway and just want to work him out to explore all available options. The Dolphins have needs at cornerback and offensive tackle that need to be addressed, and many people believe that they will trade up into the top ten in this draft to try and draft Oklahoma’s Lane Johnson to shore up their situation at tackle. It would also make more sense for them to draft a cornerback like Xavier Rhodes or Desmond Trufant at 12 instead of Vaccaro, but it is true that Vaccaro is better than either of those CBs.

The report from Walker that the Dolphins will work out Kenny Vaccaro is extremely interesting, and I’m sure Dolphins fans will be weighing in heavily on this subject.

12. Miami Dolphins – Bjorn Werner, DE, FSU – The Dolphins get Bjorn Werner who many thought would be a top 5 pick all the way down at pick #12. The Dolphins just signed a big CB in Brent Grimes in free agency, plus there should be some very high potential CB picks at the top of round 2 to fill in the #2 slot and eventually become #1. The Dolphins hit a home-run here filling their greatest need with one of the best overall players available at pick #12.

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia – Tampa Bay can’t let a linebacker like Jones fall any farther than 13th overall. They have a glaring need for an upgraded linebacker corps. Not only that, but Jarvis Jones according to the body of work he’s put on film, is the best player available at this point in the draft. They take him, wisely and become a force to be reckoned with next season in the NFC South which can be 2013’s best division in the NFL.

14. Carolina Panthers– Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri – The Panthers continue to build up their talent rich but hole-y defense with one of the top 4-3 defensive tackles in this class. Richardson would join an up and coming defense anchored by Luke Kuechly at MLB and Charles Johnson at DE. The Panthers also signed free agent DBs Drayton Florence (CB from Detroit) and Mike Mitchell (SS from Oakland) who will step in and make an immediate impact in the Carolina secondary.

15. Cleveland Browns (trade with New Orleans)– Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB, LSU – The Browns get a few extra picks trading down with New Orleans here yet still fill their hole at pass rushing jack DE/OLB. Without a 2nd round pick this year the Browns needed to do something to get some slack. The Saints don’t have a 2nd round to give but I’m sure Cleveland gets this years 3rd and another pick from the Saints in 2014, yet still get one of this draft’s elite pass rushers
