You can now add rookie running back Knile Davis to the Kansas City Chiefs’ backfield as today he was officially signed. In this past April’s draft, Davis was drafted in the third round with the 96th overall pick. Davis who is a small back registering at 5 foot 10 and 227 pounds should be able to be a great compliment to starting running back Jamaal Charles if he can stay healthy.

At Arkansas, Davis had trouble staying healthy throughout his career dealing with ankle and collarbone injuries. His best season at Arkansas was 2010 where he had 1,322 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns but this past season he didn’t do as well as he only had 377 rushing yards and two touchdowns. This past season was Davis’ redshirt junior season. As I touched on before if he can stay healthy he will be able to take a heavy load off of Jamaal Charles’ shoulders.

An interesting fact about Davis is at the NFL Combine he ran the 40 yard dash in 4.37 seconds that was the second fastest time among running backs. With Davis now in the fold at running back, the Chiefs now have a total of four running backs including Shaun Draughn out of North Carolina and Cyrus Gray out of Texas A&M. The backup running back job is for Davis to either lose or win.

To kick off the 2013 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs have selected Offensive Tackle Eric Fisher from Central Michigan.

Finally the wait is over, we know who will anchor that offensive line in Kansas City with a new look offense lead by quarterback Alex Smith.

Andy Reid is bringing his west coast offense from the Philadelphia Eagles to try to turn things around in Kansas City after replacing Romeo Crennel.

Look for the Kansas City Chiefs to look for an Inside Linebacker, Wide Receiver, Defensive Tackle and a defensive back of some sort later on in this draft.

He is the highest drafted MAC prospect since Byron Leftwich in the 2003 draft who played for Marshall.

Jacksonville Jaguars are now on the clock.

There are two new faces in town and their names are Andy Reid and Alex Smith. Both who have solid playoff experience, just have yet to win the Super Bowl. So when you get a coach who has struggled at times (who hasn’t) but also coached his teams to division titles, wild cards even NFC Championship games and bring in a quarterback who can run his west coast offense and has also been to the NFC Championship game, you have something to be excited about.

The Kansas City Chiefs, who went to tie a franchise worst 2-14 season, have decided to use the ‘Out with the bad, In with the new’ card and it looks pretty promising. Right now they have the #1 pick overall in the NFL Draft coming up on the 25th and could be looking at 2 monsters of offensive tackles in either Luke Joeckel out of Texas A&M or Eric Fisher out of Central Michigan.

I honestly think with the piece that the Kansas City Chiefs added this off season and could be adding in the draft within a week, this team could be a surprise and could pull what the Indianapolis Colts did a season ago. The best way to see how this team can play together or if they can compete, circle the Houston Texans, Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins games on this schedule. We will see what type of team they will be after Week 2 of this season, not to take anything away from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

They can finally have the consistent passing game they need, to help balance a rushing offense and take some of the weight off of Jamaal Charles’s shoulders. A team I am very excited about watching this season.

“Who knows? I’ve visited Jacksonville and I’ve had workouts with Kansas City, Oakland and Philadelphia, so who knows? All those teams look like great candidates for me, but they’re not really saying much,” Joeckel said.

Norm Hitzges asked about his nerves ahead of the big day, now less than a week away.

“Yeah, it really is. Just ready for Thursday to get here. And just sitting around not knowing where you’ll be living in the next month or so kind of freaks you out a little bit.”

And despite saying he grew up a Dallas Cowboys fan, Joeckel expressed a desire to be picked by Kansas City with that first pick.

“We’ll see. We’re praying for it, but it’s all up in the air right now. Not really hearing anything. Whatever happens is gonna be great though.”

But if he doesn’t get drafted with the first pick, it looks like he is confident he’ll go in the first 5 picks.

The draft is one week away and still everyone is wondering who will go with the first pick of the draft currently held by the Kansas City Chiefs. CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora talked to several league sources who all confirmed who the Chiefs will take number 1 overall.

La Canfora writes:

“Texas A&M left tackle Luke Joeckel will be the first name called next week. According to numerous league sources, the Chiefs are locked in on him, barring anything unforeseen, after also strongly considering Central Michigan left tackle Eric Fisher.”

There were rumors that the Chiefs might not take Joeckel with their current left tackle, Branden Albert, digging his feet in and expressing his unwillingness to move to the right side.

This led Eric Fisher to state publicly that he could play anywhere along the offensive line, including right tackle and that he would be willing to do so.

But La Canfora also has the reason why the Chiefs chose Joeckel over Fisher.

“But Joeckel has played in a tougher conference and is a safer pick, and in a league where first-time general managers is becoming the rule (especially guys with college backgrounds), you are going to see a lot of clubs deferring to the safest guy (more on that later, when we delve into the guards).”

The Chiefs could emerge as a potential threat in the AFC with a shored up line protecting a better quarterback and leading the way for one of the league’s best rushers.

The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t likely looking at Geno Smith with the number 1 overall draft pick after securing quarterback Alex Smith from the 49ers via trade. They did use the franchise tag on their left tackle, Branden Albert, who said he is unwilling to move to the right side. A move many suspected the Chiefs would make with Albert if they spent their #1 overall pick on a left tackle.

Maybe, in an effort to improve his draft stock and jockey himself for that #1 pick, tackle Eric Fisher of Central Michigan said he’d be willing to play right tackle. A willingness to play on the right side would help the Chiefs draft a tackle and appease Albert.

“I think I’m a very versatile player,” Fisher said, via Sports Radio Interviews. “I played left tackle in college and hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to play it again, but I know there’s some great tackles in the league right now, and as a rookie if I had to come in and play right tackle I’d have no problem with that. … I can play anywhere on the line they need me.”

And Eric Fisher told the local KCSP station that he has met with the Chiefs.

“Me and the Chiefs had a great workout. … As far as me, you’re getting a down-to-earth player, somebody who comes to work every day and does his job for the team. I love putting rush yards up on the board, but even more I love protecting my quarterback.”

But he thinks he knows where he stands in the draft class.

“I think I’ve worked to be the best player in the draft. In the end, it’s not up to me to make that decision.”

Last season, the Kansas City Chiefs defense was among the worst in the NFL with an average of 5.9 yards per play allowed and the third-worst defensive EPA in the league. That abysmal defensive performance cannot afford to happen in 2013, and it sounds like new defensive coordinator Bob Sutton believes that becoming more aggressive is the answer. Specifically, with regards to forcing turnovers. The Chiefs forced just 13 turnovers last season, and that was tied with the Philadelphia Eagles for the lowest total in the NFL.

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

Star linebacker Derrick Johnson told the Kansas City Star’s Randy Covitz yesterday, “Coach Sutton is definitely going to bring an attack-style defense to our ball club. He’s already talked about it, about taking the ball away. One of my goals is to take the ball away … and score. That’s the name of the game. Of course the main objective is to win, but takeaways are going to be big for us this year.”

For the Chiefs, it all starts with the secondary. Despite having a great pass rush with sack artists on the edge in Justin Houston and Tamba Hali, the Chiefs were only able to pick off seven passes last season. That was the lowest total in the NFL last season, and it was also the lowest total for the Chiefs in franchise history. Cornerbacks Brandon Flowers (3) and Stanford Routt (2) combined for five interceptions, but the only other defensive back to record a pick was Eric Berry- and he only had one.

Sutton needs to preach aggressiveness and forcing turnovers on defense to the Chiefs, because forcing turnovers can bail you out on defense. Just look at the New England Patriots, because their penchant for picking off passes and forcing an extraordinary amount of fumbles helped make up for issues in the secondary last season. As a former linebackers coach with the New York Jets, Sutton learned plenty about aggressiveness on D from head coach Rex Ryan, as well as the importance of turnovers from watching the rival Patriots. The Pats actually specifically key in on forcing fumbles and recovering them in practice quite often to increase their efficiency in that aspect of the game, and it will be interesting to see if the Chiefs follow suit.

Derrick Johnson, interestingly enough, led the team in forced turnovers with four fumbles forced.

Now that the Kansas City Chiefs have Alex Smith at the helm, many think they’ll pass on Geno Smith with the number one overall draft pick this month. That has many, including myself, speculating that they’ll select Texas A&M OT Luke Joeckel with that slot. But if they have a OT they franchise tagged in Albert, and the LT of the future in Joeckel, some one is riding pine right.

Well the Chiefs let their right tackle, Eric Winston, leave in free agency this year by releasing him. So there is a hole on the right side. Clearly, the Chiefs need a tackle on the right side, but they won’t want their left tackle of the future playing over there then moving back, like the Cowboys did with Tyron Smith?

But Branden Albert isn’t going to just move over there either. This has led to many speculating that the Chiefs are looking to trade Albert to make room for Joeckel.

“I want to be a Chief,” Albert said on the NFL Network, via ESPN.

“[I want to know] if I’m going to be there long term. Right now, everything is uncertain,” he said.

But the logical thing is to have Albert play right, while their future left tackle plays obviously on the left side.

“That’s not something I want to do,” Albert said. “I want to play left tackle. I’ve been playing left tackle the last five years of my career.”

But Albert’s comments suggesting he isn’t digging his feet in about the left or right tackle position to force a trade.

“I want that long-term commitment,” Albert said. “But as you know in football, you don’t have too much control of the situation. I want to play for the Chiefs, but I want that commitment long term.”

As draft day gets nearer excitement is building. Teams are making their final free agency moves. The Bills are getting Kolb, the Cards are getting Palmer and the Raiders are getting Flynn. Looks like this may be the first draft ever where a QB will not be taken in the top 10.

1. Kansas City Chiefs – Luke Joeckel, T, Texas A&M – The A&M product is a sure fire hit at Kansas City’s biggest position of need. They can interchange him with Eric Fisher as many draft analysts say, but Joeckel has the experience over Fisher blocking some of the best defensive linemen in this draft from his play in the SEC. Fisher’s draft was eye popping, but then again so was Dontari Poe’s. Do you think Kansas City would pick Poe over Michael Brockers, Bruce Irvin or Chandler Jones if they had a time machine?

2. Jacksonville Jaguars – Dion Jordan, OLB/DE, Oregon – This is a toughie, Jaguars need a pass rusher and have the pick of the litter. They’re a team that takes a player solely based on draft stock (see Blaine Gabbart and Justin Blackmon). I think Dion Jordan will have the highest stock of the edge pass rushers for the Jags and will be the first one in a few years to actually earn their GM a pat on the back.

3. Oakland Raiders – Shariff Floyd, DT, Florida – Like the Chiefs, Oakland has a choice here at the best 2 interior linemen in Floyd and Lotulelei. They choose the safer pick in Floyd here, who like Joeckel, has the SEC experience to go with his monstrous gameplay (how many Pac12 O linemen are 1st or 2nd round prospects this year?). Oakland needs to make a safe pick here, they’ve done some crazy things in the past (drafting Jamarcus Russell over Darrelle Revis, Patrick Willis, Calvin Johnson, Marshawn Lynch – also trading the house for Carson Palmer). It’s time they get conservative and build back their franchise as safely as possible.

4. Philadelphia Eagles – Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama – The Eagles have a choice of getting 3 potential superstars in 3 positions of need here: Dee Milliner, Eric Fisher and Ezekiel Ansah. Cornerback is by far the most glaring need for them and Milliner is the crown jewel of this class who can become a Joe Haden or Patrick Peterson like cornerstone to the Philadelphia defense.

5. Detroit Lions – Eric Fisher, T, Central Michigan - The Lions need help badly on their offensive line. Although they did just draft Riley Reiff in the first round last year, rumor has it that they’re thinking about moving him to guard. The Lions can’t pass up the opportunity to put an end to their O-Line woes. They take Eric Fisher here to help protect Matthew Stafford so that he can get the ball to Calvin Johnson next season.

6. New Orleans Saints (Trade with Browns) – Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah – The Saints trade up to fill that missing piece at NT in their new 3-4 defense with Utah’s defensive standout, Star Lotulelei. The Saints currently do not have a true nose tackle and need someone who can come in and immediately make an impact. Lotulelei may do this and more, he can be the guy to anchor New Orleans’ brand new defensive scheme next season.

7. Arizona Cardinals – Lane Johnson – T, Oklahoma - The Cardinals decide to sit out a year on drafting a QB by pulling the trigger on Carson Palmer. They now have a QB worthy of getting Fitzgerald the ball. They still need major help blocking for him. When every single player in the Cardinals back field got injured at some point last season, it’s a sign you go offensive tackle in the 1st. Lane Johnson is one of the most athletic in this class and give Carson Palmer that much needed protection this season.

8. Buffalo Bills – Cordarralle Patterson – WR, Tennessee – The Bills decide to give Kolb a shot rather than go for Geno. They bank on the best looking WR in the draft in Cordarrelle Patterson. This way, when they do sign their next franchise QB, he’ll already have his weapons to throw to.

9. New York Jets – Ezekiel Ansah, OLB/DE, BYU – The Jets have so many choices at #9, but with Ziggy Ansah and Dion Jordan gone and Eric Fisher falling, the smartest move is to pull the trigger on a lineman many considered to be worthy of a #1 overall pick. A quintessential step in the rebuilding of the Jets. Eric Fisher will immediately bring their below average offensive line to one of the best in the NFL with Mangold and Ferguson at center and left tackle. Fisher could play right and eventually replace Ferguson at left, while Ducasse, Howard, Colon and possibly a later round pick can rotate at guard. Now whoever wins the battle at QB, will have time to relax and throw the ball and Mike Goodson whose always been great at finding the right holes can have his best NFL season yet.

10. Tennessee Titans – Chance Warmack, G, Alabama – The Titans whose greatest need may be at Guard have the opportunity to sign the best guard in the draft and a surefire starter. He’ll give Chris Johnson the help he’s been complaining about not having in the run game and can help Jake Locker stay off the injury reserve list immediately.

The Chiefs have been busy this off-season and have made vast improvements to their team for next year. They temporarily solved their QB problem in the signing of Alex Smith. They also now may have one of the most talented defensive backfield in football adding Sean Smith and Dunta Robinson to a secondary that already bolsters a solid Brandon Flowers at the #1 CB spot. Chiefs’ defense seems to be in great shape with Eric Berry, their CBs and a strong defensive line. The Chiefs can draft a linebacker, but should focus on building a solid offense with this draft. The Chiefs need run and pass protection above everything, they must keep Jamaal Charles and Alex Smith safe and productive this season, which is why they likely pickup an offensive lineman with pick #1. The Chiefs have a play-maker in Dwayne Bowe, but that’s all they really have as a weapon for Alex Smith right now.

Round 1 – Luke Joeckel, T, Texas A&M- We all can assume they use this pick on an offensive tackle. The popular pick here would be Joeckel but some people argue that the Chiefs may take Central Michigan’s Eric Fisher. I say Joeckel is safer, we’ve seen him on tape against numerous 1st round defenders in this class and know exactly what we’re getting. Eric Fisher will probably be good too and may even have a higher ceiling but the Chiefs need to make sure to get it right this time.

Round 2 – Tyler Eiffert, TE, Notre Dame – Does any team need an early round tight end more than the Chiefs? Since the Bears acquired Martellus Bennett, I can’t think of one (maybe Tennessee? – they have many other needs though). Eiffert can be a good grab at the top of round 2 for the Chiefs, giving them not only some more help blocking but also potentially becoming the 2nd playmaking receiver that Kansas City has been searching for for the last few years. The Chiefs may get lucky and see Eiffert drop just due to teams having more pressing needs in round 1.

Sleeper – Cobi Hamilton, WR, Arkansas – The brightest spot on a dismal Arkansas team, Hamilton may just be who Kansas City is looking for to take pressure off Bowe. He’s a big bodied receiver at 6’3 209, who can complement the athletic, speedy Bowe well. He has over 1,300 yards receiving, was a 3rd team all-american and still is only being projected as a 5th rounder. Cobi Hamilton can very well turn out to be the gem of this draft. Paired with Bowe, a playmaking tight end in Eiffert and Baldwin and McClustor splitting slot duties, the Chiefs all the sudden seem to have some serious firepower for newcomer, Alex Smith
