So after winning my league Super Bowl following the 2006 season, I quit playing Fantasy Football for a few seasons. Honestly, I must say I did NOT miss it. It’s nice to enjoy football for what it is, and not end up screaming at the TV and ruining a Sunday over something stupid like “Damn, why did Brady throw it to Hernandez? I started Gronk!!!” That said, I’m still an idea man… and I’ve got a great idea to breathe new life into Fantasy Football for anyone getting bored or looking for a new twist: Divisional Fantasy Football.

Each of the 8 players gets one NFL Division and can field his team from any players in that division. So the person with the NFC East could choose from Eli Manning, RGIII, Michael Vick, and Tony Romo at QB. Meanwhile the guy with the AFC North could pencil in Ravens RB Ray Rice and Bengals WR A.J. Green every week. Whoever drafts the AFC South would boast a team featuring Texans RB Adrian Foster and Colts QB Andrew Luck. You get the idea.

It would sort of take the fun out of the draft, since there’d only be one round, but the guy with the first pick still has to strategize… does he take the NFC North so he’ll have Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, Vikings RB Adrian Peterson, and Lions WR Calvin Johnson? Or take the NFC West just to have Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson available at QB to be paired with Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald and Rams WR Tavon Austin? And of course you’d still have week to week strategy of who to start/play.

Besides semi-killing the draft element, another stumbling block is the bye week. Usually the NFL schedule has most or all teams from one division on a bye at the same time. If one division does NOT have several teams on bye the same week, then that team would have an advantage. BUT, what if you had an active/inactive roster, so you could keep most of your top players active, but still leave plenty of “free agents” for other divisions to use one-time only when their division is on bye? Maybe you’d have to leave X number of QB’s available… Maybe each week you could move players to/from inactive list.

So I have the NFC South, and they’re all on bye except New Orleans. Maybe I start QB Drew Brees the best of the Saints players and then fill in with the unprotected players from the other divisions. Maybe force everyone to leave 1-2 QB’s from their division on an unprotected inactive list so the talent pool was decent….

Not sure if this format would work in head-to-head style of play, or more suitable to a “rotisserie” format where you don’t play against anyone, just accumulate points each week. Maybe it could be done either way.

Not sure how this idea could make money. Unless you could have a website where people would play for $10 and just spread the word around until it’s really popular. Perhaps I could copyright the concept so I could cash in if ESPN and Yahoo wanted to start offering this. Probably not, who knows. But consider this date/time-stamped blog entry from 2008 as my official claim on the idea; feel free to contact me with big-money offers.

The San Francisco 49ers are going to have a beautiful new stadium. As details begin to emerge about what will be inside, fans across the league should be getting giddy.

While the 49ers have taken a shot at Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and his palace by saying they would not have an oversized scoreboard, they are ready to appeal to fans in this new digital age of the sport. Per Darren Rovell:

[blackbirdpie url="https://twitter.com/darrenrovell/status/270184536170717184"]

It is a brilliant marketing tactic. It seems that these days everyone and their mother plays fantasy football and cell phone signals are often overloaded at a stadium during a game so it makes it hard to check up on scores and stats around the league that could be impacting your fantasy football match ups.

The 49ers have the answer.

It’s only a matter of time until team’s around the league adopt this strategy to appeal and cater to the needs of fans in our new technologically advanced age of enjoying the sport.

It’s time to look at the individual fantasy matchups that the Indianapolis Colts will be facing when they take on the Miami Dolphins today. The biggest injury for the Colts is the knee injury to Donald Brown, and he is listed questionable on the injury report after it was found that his knee swelled yesterday. He practiced fully on Friday and will be limited if he does play.

QB Andrew Luck

The Miami Dolphins defense is an underrated unit overall, despite being thin at the safety position. Cornerback Sean Smith does a solid job of shadowing receivers, and the pass rush is up there with the best of them. Cameron Wake is the headlining name, but Randy Starks is always one to watch on the inside.

There’s no reason to start Luck in this matchup, especially with No. 2 WR Donnie Avery consistently underperforming each week. He doesn’t even catch 50% of what’s thrown at him. Stanford teammate Coby Fleener will be out for two weeks, and Luck is once again a player who is an absolute no-go for your fantasy team.

Jim Brown-US PRESSWIRE

RB Donald Brown/Vick Ballard

I think he will be able to play through the pain, but he’s going to be splitting carries pretty evenly with Vick Ballard even if he does play. It’s difficult to pick one player over the other, because it depends on what you think Brown’s chances are of playing and how many carries he gets in comparison. The difference maker is probably going to be the fact that Brown is the better running back and averages almost a full yard per carry more.

Update: Start Ballard, because Brown is unlikely to play.

WR Reggie Wayne

Reggie Wayne is, once again, a must-start and will be the most productive player on the Colts offense. He’s the most talented player, and he has arguably the best matchup overall. Smith is a good CB overall, but he does get burned quite a bit and isn’t the best against precise route-runners like Wayne. At this point, the Colts veteran wideout is likely one of the best ten at the position this week. I think he can break a deep catch or two, in addition to all the targets he’s able to hoard. Wayne isn’t even going to draw all of his assignments against Smith, and that’s a good thing given the weaknesses of the rest of the DBs in coverage.

WR Donnie Avery

Even if you are in a 14-team league, there are better options at WR and, hopefully, at the flex position. Avery doesn’t even average 50 receiving yards per game.

TE Dwayne Allen

Even though he is productive on a per-target basis, Allen doesn’t get many targets and will only gain about three more targets with Fleener out. The focus is going to be on Wayne, and there are better options than Allen out there.

Colts Defense/ST

Reggie Bush is going to light up the Colts run defense, especially since they allow running backs to average 4.8 yards per carry against them. The pass defense is even worse, and the only thing going for them is the fact that Brian Hartline and Ryan Tannehill are both listed questionable. Matt Moore is a great backup QB as well. I mean, there is no reason to roster the Colts defense in the first place with how bad the secondary is and the lack of push against the run. I love the pass rush from Robert Mathis and Jerry Hughes, but this defense is clearly one of the worst ten in the NFL.

Need help with preparing for your fantasy football league? The Fantasy Guru is here once again to give you a few tips on how to play the crazy game of fantasy football.

Fantasy Football rankings are always a stretch most weeks when you are trying to predict how players are likely to behave in any given matchup. However, at least in that case you have recent history, team strength and opponent to consider for only one week. Trying to predict several weeks ahead is another matter as is shown by how many errors you inevitably find in any fantasy analysts preseason ranks. With that said, there is always a need to at least try and get that crystal ball working and, with many leagues having their trade deadline very soon, I figured it was time I chimed in and gave you guys some idea of who I like overall. This special edition of my rankings could help you determine your team’s worth and who you should consider for trades in the next week or two.

Need help with preparing for your fantasy football league? The Fantasy Guru is here once again to give you a few tips on how to play the crazy game of fantasy football.

It’s Friday and Friday means it’s time to open the mailbag again. Let’s just get right into it with this week’s emails.

Q: I own Calvin Johnson and I want to trade him because I am sick of his lack of touchdowns. Two questions – what do you think I should get for him and do you believe he is a victim of the fabled “Madden Curse”? – Kevin Nelson from Madison, Wisconsin

A: Second bit first – I am not really the superstitious type but it is spooky just how many of those who appear on the cover of Madden have a poor statistical season that year. With that said, Megatron is still having a fairly good season overall. Despite having only one touchdown, he’s still a top 20 wide receiver scoring wise, still getting double digit targets every week, averages six receptions per game and averages an unreal 91 yards per game. The only number that is lacking is the touchdowns so I wouldn’t call Calvin a Madden Curse victim just yet.

Now, what’s he worth? Well, first of all I’d advise you to check out my Rest Of Season Rankings that come out tomorrow. I’ll be listing my top 200 players – maybe top 250 – to finish the season. Here’s a sneak peek – I still have Calvin Johnson in my top 20 overall and maybe top 15. I would target top guys with high upside that their owners may be a little wary of – the likes of Trent Richardson, LeSean McCoy, A.J. Green, Mike Wallace, Jimmy Graham or Robert Griffin III. With that said, I wouldn’t rush to get rid of Megatron – I think he’s in for a big second half.

Q: I am leading my keeper league and am looking to trade for Tony Gonzalez to help me. Do you think I can get a discount because he’s probably retiring? – David Jackson from Des Moines, Iowa

A: The short answer is no. The thing about Tony Gonzalez is that he may be on his way out but he is still an elite tight end in a year when the position is pretty shallow compared to the explosion of offense we saw in 2011. You may be heading to the playoffs but your opponents will also be working to get better before the trade deadline too. If you don’t pay enough, someone else may get Gonzo by outbidding you – that of course is if he’s even available. If the team that has Tony G is likely to miss playoffs, you might get a slight discount but because of how few top tight ends there are this year I would advise that his value is still relatively high and the minimum anyone should get for him is a good keeper to make it worth the other owner’s time – so minimum top 40.

Oct 28, 2012; Chicago, IL, USA; Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart (28) runs the ball against the Chicago Bears during the first quarter at Soldier Field. Mandatory Credit: Rob Grabowski-US PRESSWIRE

Q: DeAngelo Williams didn’t get traded yesterday. What this mean for the fantasy value of DWill, Jonathan Stewart, Mike Tolbert and Cam Newton? – Sam Hockerley from Cleveland, Ohio

A: Start with the QB – I don’t believe this has much impact on Cam’s value. The Panthers run game has been bad as a whole this year but I don’t see Williams’ remaining in Carolina impacting on Newton. The other guy it doesn’t really affect is Mike Tolbert. Had DWill left, then he would have entered the discussion – however, he didn’t so Tolbert remains irrelevant at this point.

So now we’re back at the old fantasy conundrum – Jonathan Stewart or DeAngelo Williams? For me it’s clear as day – it’s Stewart. All the word out of Carolina is that the Panthers are switching to more of a one back run game with Jonathan Stewart taking the lead role. Going forward, JStew is gonna be a top 25 running back every week whereas I doubt I even rank DWill most weeks unless something changes.

Q: You have Michael Vick in your top 10 this week. Does this mean you think he keeps his job? – Rich from Atlanta, Georgia

A: My weekly rankings are entirely based on how I think a player will do any given week and are based primarily on probability. The New Orleans Saints have been as favorable a match-up to QBs in fantasy as any team in the NFL so there’s a decent chance that Vick puts up some good numbers this week – a decent guess would be 230 passing yards, 50 rushing yards, 2 passing TDs and a rushing TD with three picks and a fumble which in most leagues would net you 20 points and be a solid top 10.

As to the broader question, Michael Vick is a risky proposition right now. I would not trade for him unless I was giving up a depth player with little value like Joique Bell, Beanie Wells, Brian Hartline or Andy Dalton. Personally, I think he makes it to the end of the season – just – but is gone from Philly after that. I wouldn’t bet a single thing on it though as this situation is an absolute mess. If you own Michael Vick, you better have a decent backup or you are likely to get burned.

Q: In my 2 QB dynasty league, I’ve been offered Brandon Marshall and Sam Bradford for Matthew Stafford, Donald Brown and James Jones. What do you think? – Nick Lumas from Toronto, Ontario, Canada

A: I’m a big believer in Brandon Marshall who has really shone in his first year with the Bears and I like Sam Bradford to mature in a very good professional quarterback as his team improves around him but whoever offered this trade is asking for way too much.

Stafford is having a tough year but he is still a very good signal caller on a high powered passing offense with a good and improving receiving corps. Donald Brown has had his issues with blocking and assignments at times but we have seen some steady improvement as Bruce Arians has simplified the playbook in Indy following Peyton Manning’s departure and I expect he’ll be fantasy relevant for at least 3-4 more years. As for James Jones, I believe Greg Jennings time in Green Bay is almost over and Jones is the player I feel will step into that role which for me makes him at least a top 25 WR in dynasty formats with the potential to be top 10. So I would not do this deal unless Jones was removed – then it’s much better.

———————————————–

That’s a wrap for this week. If you’d like to have a question answered in next week’s Fantasy Mailbag, please send it to SZSuperLeague@live.com and you may be a part of the action.
Need help with preparing for your fantasy football league? The Fantasy Guru is here once again to give you a few tips on how to play the crazy game of fantasy football.

You want answers? You got em. Time to open the inbox again and answer your emails. Let’s see what we have this week.

Q: In the past couple of weeks, you have been ranking rookie QBs pretty high – this week RG3 is 2nd and Andrew Luck 7th. How can you do that when there are proven guys like Romo and Eli ranked lower? – John King-Davies from Kansas City, Missouri

A: When I do my rankings each week as I mentioned in the week 8 rankings, I go through all the names and I look mainly at the probability of what that player’s production will be on any given week. The biggest problem with football when doing this is that the sample size is always relatively small no matter what point of the season you are at. Unlike baseball and basketball, there are only 16 games per team in the regular season in the NFL and this means that the amount we see these players do their thing is extremely limited.

The effect of this is that the “established” players tend to get given more opportunity in the minds of fantasy owners while the younger inexperienced players are deemed as risky because they haven’t been around long. What I need to do is try and weigh the risk with the reward and come up with the best probability I can that the player will be more reliable that week than the next guy. I have made a significant effort this season to be open to how these young QBs have developed and it has become apparent that both Luck and RG3 are going to score pretty well most weeks and this week in particular they have the matchups that suit them doing pretty well.

Q: I own both Roddy White and Julio Jones. Should I trade one? What do you think of having top scoring teammates on the same fantasy team? – Justin Drazen from Providence, Rhode Island

A: I personally would hang onto both. Roddy White has had at least 50 yards off a minimum of four receptions every single week and his consistent production with the upside of getting a TD or two on top makes him a top fantasy option – he’s in my top 5 WRs overall. Julio may not have the same consistency as Roddy but he is such a game-breaking talent that when he is on he will blow your fantasy team straight to the top – something that is only improving as his experience in the NFL grows. If both players are playing to a continually high standard, I see no reason to trade either.

If you really feel the need to move one, I’d choose to trade Julio Jones simply because Roddy’s consistency is something I believe is a rare commodity in fantasy WRs. As to Julio’s value, I’ll be doing my rest of the season ranks next week but I’d say he’s probably top 25 overall or maybe top 20 at a stretch which would put him in the range of guys like Trent Richardson, Stevan Ridley, Jordy Nelson and Wes Welker. In cases like this, I like to make offers for package trades – 2 for 2, 3 for 3 – so that that way I can try and hide the value of what I am receiving and get maximum value for what I am trading. Just a hint or two there.

Oct 21, 2012; St. Louis, MO, USA; Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb (18) celebrates after scoring a touchdown during the third quarter against the St. Louis Rams at Edward Jones Dome. The Packers defeated the Rams 30-20. Mandatory Credit: Scott Kane-US PRESSWIRE

Q: If Greg Jennings is out for most of the season, how do you rate the other Green Bay receivers? – Josh Thomas from St Paul, Minnesota

A: While we don’t have confirmation of Jennings timetable yet, the extended period of time he is likely to be out first and foremost favors Jordy Nelson who should now be Aaron Rodgers’ primary read. James Jones should be the next to receive a big upgrade for fantasy owners due to his being the guy who would take Jennings’ spot.

With that being said there has been news out of Green Bay this week that the Packers feel Randall Cobb is due for a big increase in his workload and that he is ready to take on a leading role in the offense. Whether or not he is ready suddenly becomes irrelevant – although fantasy owners would say he’s certainly there after last week – as the thing is that this endorsement of Cobb makes him the guy to own in the Packers receiving corps. When I do my rest of the season rankings this week, I expect I’ll have Cobb as a top 15 WR and possibly top 10.

Q: Rob Gronkowski week after week is ranked near the top but he has had some really awful games. How can you keep doing that and have Tony Gonzalez below him? – Luis Kendall from Montgomery, Alabama

A: Tony G has been nothing short of consistent this season – something I expected from him going into the year as I listed him as my sleeper TE pick when the NFL Spin Zone staff picked their sleepers and busts. I’ve also ranked him ahead of Gronk a couple of times and in fact I had the Patriots TE as low as 6th one week. This week’s ranking is a reflection of the fact that Aaron Hernandez is still hurt and so I expect Gronkowski to have a big week against the poor Rams secondary. Gonzalez has a tougher matchup and one that may see him used as a decoy a little more to free up Roddy and Julio against the star-studded Eagles corners. Very tough to rank though.

LATE UPDATE – Word from NFL.com reporter Albert Breer is that Aaron Hernandez did not make the trip to London. This adds more fuel to the theory that Gronk will get a greater share of the targets this week and increases his probability for success.

Q: I’ve been offered Brandon Marshall and Alfred Morris for Calvin Johnson. Megatron is my favorite player but is this too good to decline? – Joel from Portland, Oregon

A: Take this deal and run with it my friend. Megatron is arguably the best WR in the NFL but his failure to connect with Matthew Stafford for a touchdown is something worth worrying about. Brandon Marshall on the other hand has shown a powerful chemistry with Jay Cutler and is a top 5 WR for fantasy while Alfred Morris looks to have made the Redskins RB job his while getting massive production and looking good doing it. Calvin is awesome but when someone is willing to pay that much for him you just have to take it.

I will say this though – if you are playing fantasy football for fun, I would have no problem if you kept Calvin because he’s your favorite. I wouldn’t recommend it if you want to win but if that’s not your goal then just keep him.

———————————————-

That’s it for this week’s fantasy mailbag. As always, you can submit your question via email to SZSuperLeague@live.com if you’d like to be featured in next week’s column. Keep an eye out next week for a special edition of my rankings in which I’ll do my top 200 for the rest of this season – that’ll be on top of my regular plug and play rankings for Week 9.

Until next time, this is the Fantasy Guru signing off.

“For more than 60 years, Topps has been committed to connecting fans with their favorite athletes. With the release of Topps HUDDLE, we are building on this legacy and extending this iconic brand even deeper into the casual, social, and mobile space,” said Michael Bramlage, Vice President at The Topps Company, Inc. “It is very exciting to be partnering with the NFLPA to connect new, digital-first fans with their favorite football players.”

The app itself is a different and unique spin on the fantasy football genre. You initially get a pack of digital cards and thats your team. The pack includes 11 players, 7 of which you would start for the weekend’s games. Your team isn’t limited to filling certain positional roles like most fantasy leagues instead you could comprise a team entirely of punters if you preferred.

But the improvements on the fantasy football genre doesn’t end there. Topps lists three features unique to HUDDLE:

Real-Time Roster Optimization: Did your QB just get injured? Move NFL players in and out of your starting lineup in real-time—during games—to maximize your points.

Expanded News Feed: What’s your QB saying on Twitter? Get the latest NFL news with more editorial coverage, Twitter feeds, and “shout outs” from fellow fans.

Multi-Zone Leaderboard: Have fantasy league fatigue? Compete against your Facebook friends and all other app users to crown football’s greatest fan.

But the uniqueness of HUDDLE doesn’t end there. Don’t like a play on your team? Trade the card, just as you would do when you were a child. You aren’t limited to the participants in your league like in other fantasy football you can trade with anyone across the world in the app.

“Topps Digital is focused on bringing a unique and invigorating news experience to our users” said Chris Vaccaro, sports editor for Topps. “Our news feed is front and center in the app, offering daily commentary and analysis of both NFL happenings and HUDDLE specific news and information to bolster the fantasy user experience while keeping everyone informed.”

You can also link your HUDDLE team to your social media profiles on Facebook and Twitter (you can also follow HUDDLE on Twitter @ToppsHUDDLE). By connecting to your social media you can engage and see where you stack up on a leaderboard comprised of your friends and followers.

“We’re confident fans will enjoy this creative mobile and social experience,” said Nicole Pozzi, Senior Manager of Multimedia Licensing for NFL PLAYERS. ”Topps continues to find new and exciting ways of showcasing our players while providing innovative engagement opportunities for fans wherever and whenever they want.”

The newsfeed is really what makes this stand out from other fantasy football. Many leagues require participants to research their teams and players on their own. The newsfeed brings all that information to you. In the newsfeed you can find information about your favorite players, who to sit or start but also the lighter side of the sport. You can see what your favorite players are tweeting or video recaps of plays but also the good natured trash talking that exists among sports fans. In HUDDLE you can “shout” on the newsfeed and send a message out for everyone to see, whether its asking for a trade, boasting about your team, or crying about your suffering.

The app is free to purchase from iTunes.

Screenshots of the app are included below from ToppsHUDDLE.com.

Need help with preparing for your fantasy football league? The Fantasy Guru is here once again to give you a few tips on how to play the crazy game of fantasy football.

Probability. When I do these rankings every week, that word is the one I come back to over and over again when deciding who should go where. It’s all about who I think has the best chance to deliver a good fantasy day. This week, that word comes to the forefront as there are a number of very favorable matchups for fantasy owners to exploit as the bye weeks continue. With the Bengals, Bills, Texans and Ravens on bye, there are a number of top fantasy producers unavailable this week not to mention injuries to key players like Maurice Jones-Drew. These rankings should help you decide who to plug and play this week.

——————————————

Next week I will have two sets of rankings for you – my usual plug and play ranks for week 9 and also a special set rankings for the rest of the season for those of you looking to identify where the players are valued overall – a very useful tool with the trade deadline coming up soon in most leagues. As always, there is also the Fantasy Mailbag on Friday – if you have a question to submit for that, send your email to SZSuperLeague@live.com and you could find yourself featured in the article.

Need help with preparing for your fantasy football league? The Fantasy Guru is here once again to give you a few tips on how to play the crazy game of fantasy football.

What’s better than a mailbag on Friday? You got it – a mailbag on Saturday! Since we’re going a day late, you guys deserve some extra answers so I have extended this week’s mailbag to seven emails instead of five. Better get on with it.

Q: Is now a good time to buy low on Matthew Stafford? He hasn’t thrown many TDs this year but better days are coming right? – Alex from Grand Rapids, Michigan

A: If you are a fan of Stafford but couldn’t afford his high price tag on draft day, now is the time to start looking at him. A mere four passing touchdowns in five games is too slow a pace for such a high passing offense like Detroit to maintain and I expect things will pick up. With that being said, Stafford’s next two opponent’s are the Bears and Seahawks who have both been quarterback graveyards at times this season. Be prepared that if you do go get him, it may be a wee while longer before Matthew Stafford really picks up to elite production.

Q: In a 2QB league, I’ve been offered Christian Ponder for Shonn Greene. My QBs are Cutler and Sanchez and my RBs are Peterson, MJD, Morris and Ballard. Accept? – Kyle Hendrik from Baltimore, Maryland

A: This is a no-brainer accept for me. Shonn Greene exploded into production last week and now is the time to take advantage and sell him high. I do think that Greene is at better than his previous few weeks production but the reality is that the Jets offense is a mess and you should sell where you can. I like Ponder as a nice QB2 in that situation. Try and sell Sanchez too – maybe pair him with Ballard to go after someone like Rivers, Ben or Romo so you can play matchups.

Q: Michael Crabtree didn’t do much against the Seahawks this week with Manningham out. Is the honeymoon over? – Jack from Brenham, Texas

A: I wouldn’t say that at all. Granted, the 49ers passing offense didn’t have a very good night but the Seahawks have done that to a lot of teams this year including the Patriots and Packers who have much better attacks overall. Crabtree is one of the better PPR players out there and in standard scoring he’ll at least have the distinction of being someone who gets plenty of looks which at the very least will put him in your flex conversation every week. I think we need to be careful not to write Crabtree off after one less than impressive game as it is becoming obvious that he is finally beginning to mature as an NFL receiver. If anything, I think Crabtree is a nice buy low considering his talent and ability to get downfield. I wouldn’t give up on him though.

Sep 23, 2012; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (29) runs with the ball against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cowboys Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

Q: You ranked Philip Tanner 24th and Felix Jones 32nd among running backs this week with DeMarco Murray out. Why? – Oliver Martin from College Station, Texas

A: I’ll be real honest – I have never liked Felix Jones as a running back. He’s been given chance after chance to take that Dallas job and time after time he has either failed to impress, gotten hurt or been outplayed by his competition. The reality is that this is probably Jones’ last chance to stay as a Cowboy going forward. I know that he’s been a favorite of Jerry Jones for a long time but it has to be said that even Jerry knows time is running out on this one.

Personally, I like what I have seen from Philip Tanner so far in his young career and I find it somewhat unfortunate that he arrived at the same time as DeMarco Murray. Dallas has an opportunity here to look to their future and find out what they have in Tanner while Murray is out with his injury. To give Felix Jones yet another opportunity in my opinion would be a waste of time. Regardless of who gets the start, I think tanner has the better day and winds up coming out of the match-up with Carolina as the Cowboys lead back until DeMarco Murray returns.

Q: I’m in a league where we are voting on how our draft order will be decided for next year. What’s your opinion of using a Lottery system? – Louise Forrest from Jacksonville, Florida

A: First thing’s first – I think it’s a mistake to be deciding settings for next year in midseason. One of my biggest pet peeves in fantasy is that I feel all rule changes shouldn’t come into affect until there has been a full season played after voting. In your case, this would mean the results of the vote would not apply until the 2014 Draft. However, I digress…

I must admit that I do like the idea of using a Draft Lottery. For those who don’t understand what this means, I’ll explain quickly. Each team is assigned a percentage chance that their team would be picked for any given pick. These numbers are put into a Lottery randomizer – these are readily available online, just google “draft lottery” and you should find one – and the machine spits out a draft order based on the percentages. The team that finished last always has the best chances of getting the top pick with the league champion having the worst odds.

Many people will disagree about the use of a lottery as there is the belief that the team that finishes last must always have the first draft pick to help with parity. In my opinion, this particular argument is somewhat outdated. You can always rig the percentages to make it difficult for the last placed team to lose. The point of a lottery is three-fold – it prevents teams from tanking, it enables for the trading of draft picks before the lottery to have an element of risk that wasn’t there previously and finally it adds a certain excitement to draft time which would other wise not be there. All in all, draft lotteries are a fun way to add a little something special to what may be an otherwise ordinary league.

Q: I own both Tom Brady and RG3 in standard league and I really need RB help. Which should I trade and who should I target? – Helen Turner from Seattle, Washington

A: I’ve had this problem myself in a couple of leagues and I’m gonna advise you do what I did – keep Robert Griffin III. Brady has plenty of value and you should be able to get a top 15 RB easily. I’d aim high to start with just to see what response you get – if you can get Jamaal Charles, Ray Rice, MJD etc then you’ve done well. If you can though, the one RB I would target is Trent Richardson. It’s possible his owner may be looking to sell high off the recent success of the Browns rookie and a player like Brady is exactly what an owner in this mindset would be aiming for.

Sep 1, 2011; Jacksonville, FL, USA; St. Louis Rams wide receiver Danny Amendola (16) looks up from the sideline during a preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Field.
Q: My team is 6-0 and riding high towards the playoffs thanks to some big one-off games from guys like Jordy as well as making nice waiver pickups like Alfred Morris. Looking toward playoffs, is now a good time to target injured players who won’t be back for a while or should I just keep doing what I’m doing? – John Lucas Drummond from Hattiesburg, Mississippi

A: First of all, congratulations on the good start John. Not an easy thing to do.

I do like the idea of looking ahead in this situation. While you’re in no way guaranteed of making the playoffs – believe me, I once went from being 8-0 to 8-6 and missing out on the post-season on tiebreakers a couple of years back – I would advise at least looking at ways you can make wise investments in your future.

First of all, injured players. I would advise a certain amount of caution here for two main reasons – all too often players who return from injury get hurt again and when they do come back there is no guarantee they’d have the form that was displayed before getting hurt. Vincent Jackson was a perfect example of this last season. If you must go after an injured guy, make sure you do so at a reasonable price. One trick I like to use is to get an injured player added into a multi player deal to help make up the value of a bigger piece I’m giving up. As an example, this week in a deep 2 QB dynasty I traded Peyton Manning, MJD and Brandon Pettigrew for RG3, Darren Sproles and Alshon Jeffery. The inclusion of Jeffery looked like an afterthought but he was in fact a target. Guys like Danny Amendola, DeMarco Murray and Donald Brown are smart investments here.

One other quick note if you’re making moves for the future – be mindful of late season schedules. Be aware that certain players have more favorable match-ups later in the season and as such they may be more desirable to you than they would have been otherwise. Matthew Stafford is a good example here – his next two games are against Chicago and Seattle but from weeks 13-16 he gets Indianapolis, Green Bay, Arizona and Atlanta. Something to keep in mind.

————————————————–

There ya go – seven of the best and I am done.
