The Super Bowl is getting closer every day. The San Francisco 49ers had a bittersweet practice. On one hand Ahmad Brooks returned to practice, albeit in a limited role, as he continues to struggle with a shoulder injury. The bitter part is on the other hand, Aldon Smith was limited in practice as well. We’ve included a full injury report for the 49ers below

The following players are battling injuries as well and fully participated in Wednesday’s practice:

• RB Frank Gore (shoulder, ankle)
• LB Patrick Willis (shoulder)
• RB LaMichael James (finger)
• OG Mike Iupati (shoulder)
• DT Justin Smith (elbow, triceps)
• CB Tarell Brown (shoulder)
• LB Navarro Bowman (shoulder)
• TE Garrett Celek (foot)
• RB Bruce Miller (shoulder)
• LB Clark Haggans (shoulder)

Both Ahmad Brooks and Aldon Smith are expected to play in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

But what has me curious is what’s going on in San Francisco that has so many players out with shoulder injuries?

Is it an equipment problem, are they using those single strap back packs of the 90s that cause so many problems and scoliosis outbreaks?

Maybe they just have learned to hit and tackle properly and aren’t leading with their head like a lot of NFL human missles, aka defensive players.

Either way, they aren’t battling two many injuries with the big game on the horizon.

“(We) are aware that Aldon Smith incurred minor injuries during an incident last night,” the 49ers said in a statement. “We are in contact with Aldon and thankful that his injuries were not more serious and that he is recovering comfortably. The 49ers are also in communication with local authorities as they gather information regarding the incident, and will reserve further comment at this time.”

The Sacramento Bee reported that Santa Clara County Sheriffs’ office deputies reported to a house party around 2 am on Sunday. They were called to the scene because neighbors reported hearing gunshots. Two people were found shot and one person was found stabbed.

Sources confirmed that was indeed Smith who was stabbed. Smith who is only 22 years old has had a tumultuous off seasons since his break out rookie season. As a rookie he set the franchise record with 14 sacks and he also recorded two forced fumbles. In January Smith was charged with driving under the influence in Miami Beach.

Ever since the movie “Project X” there has been an effort to throw outrageous house parties, emulating the film. There were said to be over a 100 people at this specific party. They even called for backup from California Highway Patrol.

“It was a chaotic scene,” California Highway Patrol Sgt. Cardoza said. “There was a lot of commotion, and no one knows where the gunshots came from.”

Cardoza told the newspaper there are no suspects in the case at this time.

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith had himself one heck of a rookie campaign. The 49ers season is now over and Smith has immediately found himself in a little trouble. According to KTVU.com, Smith has been arrested for DUI in South Beach.

Smith was booked at 9:32 am ET and was released on $1,000 bond.

In his first NFL season, Smith racked up an impressive 14 sacks. He was instrumental in helping the 49ers get to the NFC Championship game. Smith has a promising career ahead of him, so hopefully this is just an out of character incident and he will be able to stay out of future trouble.

Smith played defensive end at Mizzou, but will play outside linebacker in the 49ers’ 3-4 scheme. He has drawn some comparisons to DeMarcus Ware, but that might be a bit premature, and this might be a bit of a stretch.

Give credit for new head coach Jim Harbaugh, however, for not feeling like he had to draft a quarterback because that’s what rookie head coaches usually do. Harbaugh clearly has some faith in Alex Smith and understands that teams win championships on defense.

Even though I’m a bit skeptical of taking Smith this high, I like taking defense first here.
