With the #10 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans have selected Chance Warmack out of Alabama.

This is the 5th lineman to go in the first 10 picks in this years draft. A great pull blocker, with 40 starts at Alabama, was one of the key blockers on that Alabama Crimson Tide offensive line that lead the way for Eddie Lacey, who is also a possible 1st round pick. This kid could definitely become Chris Johnson and Shonn Greene’s favorite teammate if he is able to do what he did in Alabama, in Tennessee.

San Diego Chargers are now on the clock.

Rumor has it that D.J. Fluker and not Chance Warmack will be the first prospect on the Alabama Crimson Tide drafted, and the unfortunate thing is that this is possible. Daniel Jeremiah tweeted out information regarding this today, and teams might feel that drafting a guy who can play at guard and tackle is better than just drafting someone who will only play guard. Fluker would like to play at tackle instead of guard (most prospects would), but the big OL might be best off at guard. There is going to be a huge run on tackles in the top end of the draft, and Fluker is seeing his stock rise solely due to demand. There is no doubt in my mind that Chance Warmack is the superior prospect to Fluker, but it’s all about the tackle position these days.

Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

According to draft analyst and insider Tony Pauline, the Titans view Fluker as “a day one starter” at the guard position. Fluker’s natural position at the pro level could very well be at guard, and the Titans still need some help there even after signing star guard Andy Levitre from the Buffalo Bills. However, it is best for the Titans to take Warmack instead, because they already have bookend tackles and should instead focus on the best prospect available on the inside of the line. To me, that is clearly Warmack.

Now Pauline is also reporting that the San Diego Chargers are considering D.J. Fluker one pick after the Titans at No. 11, and tackle is the biggest need in San Diego. They need to surround Philip Rivers with some competence in front of him on the offensive line, and their situation at tackle is definitely due for an upgrade. The Chargers are setting up Rivers for failure, and they might take Fluker in order to do all that they can to upgrade at a position of huge need. Although Fluker, in my opinion, doesn’t have the talent to be deserving of a top 15 selection, there is a strong chance he ends up going there solely based on need. Lane Johnson is not making it out of the top ten anymore, so the Chargers might feel obligated to take Fluker and upgrade at tackle (even if Fluker is solely a right tackle).

We are exactly a week away from the 2013 NFL Draft and we here at NFL Spin Zone are still giving you a list of the top five prospects who are entering this years draft class. Now, if you haven’t seen any of my colleagues top fives, or my article on the top five tackles, please do so and come back to this article.

So continuing my piece on the tackles and guards for this years draft, this year’s class has a lot of promising talent. Quarterbacks and half backs who should have one of these tackles or guards on their teams, should have consistent protection throughout their tenure with their respected franchise.

Now since we got the top five for tackles listed, let’s start on the guards who will be looking forward to having their names called in next weeks draft, shall we? Starting off with #1 on the list

Chance Warmack, Alabama (6’2 317 lbs) - Combine Grade: 95.9 - Out of every offensive linemen who participated in the combine this year, he had the highest grade. He even had a slightly higher grade (but not by much) than potential 1st round pick Luke Joeckel who posted a 95.3 combine grade. He ran a 5.49 40 yard dash and posted a 110 inch broad jump. Finishing his senior season with the Alabama Crimson Tide, he was 3 national championships (2010, 2012, 2013) and 1 Capital One bowl (2011) along with teammate D.J. Fluker who played tackle. I have going at the 7th overall pick to the Arizona Cardinals who need help with their offensive line and should either take Warmack if available, but should draft an offensive linemen either way. He could very well slip into the Top Five picks which will include Luke Joeckel and Eric Fisher. He is a big boy, so he does have a strong punch and good extension of his arms. Good lower body strength so he shouldn’t have a problem with taking on strong defensive tackles. Doesn’t have quick feet but keeps them moving. Needs to work on his agility, it will more than likely be a key focus for coaches who get to work with him, so I think he will become lighter on his feet as time goes on.

Jonathan Cooper, North Carolina (6’2 311 lbs) - Combine Grade: 86.9 - A top performer in reps, where he completed 35, is a guard who could be a great pick up for any team if he isn’t selected within the first 15 picks. I have him going to the Chicago Bears at #20 overall but based on his combine performance, he should go a few slots ahead of that, if not, sooner than expected. He was a key anchor for one of the best rushing games in the country last season, where 3 Tarheel half backs rushed for over 600 yards or more. He wrestled in college, being an athletic big man, endurance shouldn’t be an issue. A very strong run blocker, quick feet and arm extension and comes off the ball pretty quick. Needs to add on more weight so he can handle the stronger defenders he will face in this league, other than that, Cooper has everything he needs to be a successful offensive guard in the National Football League. One kid I am very excited to watch play, no matter what team he is on.

Larry Warford, Kentucky (6’3 332 lbs) - Combine Grade: 88.3 - I never really realized this but, Kentucky hasn’t had an offensive linemen selected in the NFL draft since 1993, thank you internet for that. After checking out some of his numbers from the combine and watching video clips from the senior bowl, he could very well be an early pick in the 2nd round, maybe either the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets or Cincinnati Bengals. He finished his senior year with the University of Kentucky Wildcats where he began as a reserve at right guard, then starting the remaining 37 games he spent in Kentucky. Possesses quick feet and can stay move for move with his assignment when it comes to pass protection. Can reach the 2nd level of the field and clear some extra room for ball carriers. Has a strong punch, but needs to work on his hand speed. Gets off the snap and into oncoming tackles/defenders beautifully.

Barrett Jones, Alabama (6’4 306 lbs) - Combine Grade: 71.1 - Another senior from Alabama who played all 5 positions on the offensive line for coach Nick Saban. He was of course, apart of 3 national champion teams and 1 Capital One bowl victory. He won the Outland Trophy in 2011, which was awarded to Luke Joeckel last season, which is given to the best interior linemen in college football. Great run and pass blocker, keeps his feet moving and arms extended. Has the ability and quickness to reach the 2nd level of the field but can have trouble putting in a block on a quick target. Needs to work on his placement a little more and eliminate lunging into oncoming defenders, as they can get around him quicker. A good thing that should benefit him, is he played every position on the offensive line, so he could possibly go to the Chicago Bears who would definitely use him with all the troubles they have had in the past with their offensive line.

Brian Winters, Kent State (6’4 320 lbs) - Combine Grade: 71.1 - A surprise entrant on my list, a big offensive guard who can finish plays and keeps everything in motion as soon as the ball is snapped. Uses his foot work to help turn defenders away from either the quarterback. A very quick man for being as big as he is, should benefit him as it could get him into the mid 2nd or early 3rd round. He should either go to the Washington Redskins in the 2nd round or Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers somewhere in the 3rd. Needs to work on his balance and to continue to keep his feet moving while delivering punches to defenders, needs to seal off both the inside lane and outside corners.

1. Kansas City Chiefs – Luke Joeckel, T, Texas A&M – The A&M product is a sure fire hit at Kansas City’s biggest position of need. They can interchange him with Eric Fisher as many draft analysts say, but Joeckel has the experience over Fisher blocking some of the best defensive linemen in this draft from his play in the SEC. Fisher’s draft was eye popping, but then again so was Dontari Poe’s. Do you think Kansas City would pick Poe over Michael Brockers, Bruce Irvin or Chandler Jones if they had a time machine?

2. Jacksonville Jaguars – Dion Jordan, OLB/DE, Oregon – This is a toughie, Jaguars need a pass rusher and have the pick of the litter. They’re a team that takes a player solely based on draft stock (see Blaine Gabbart and Justin Blackmon). I think Dion Jordan will have the highest stock of the edge pass rushers for the Jags and will be the first one in a few years to actually earn their GM a pat on the back.

3. Oakland Raiders – Shariff Floyd, DT, Florida – Like the Chiefs, Oakland has a choice here at the best 2 interior linemen in Floyd and Lotulelei. They choose the safer pick in Floyd here, who like Joeckel, has the SEC experience to go with his monstrous gameplay (how many Pac12 O linemen are 1st or 2nd round prospects this year?). Oakland needs to make a safe pick here, they’ve done some crazy things in the past (drafting Jamarcus Russell over Darrelle Revis, Patrick Willis, Calvin Johnson, Marshawn Lynch – also trading the house for Carson Palmer). It’s time they get conservative and build back their franchise as safely as possible.

4. Philadelphia Eagles – Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama – The Eagles have a choice of getting 3 potential superstars in 3 positions of need here: Dee Milliner, Eric Fisher and Ezekiel Ansah. Cornerback is by far the most glaring need for them and Milliner is the crown jewel of this class who can become a Joe Haden or Patrick Peterson like cornerstone to the Philadelphia defense.

5. Detroit Lions – Eric Fisher, T, Central Michigan - The Lions need help badly on their offensive line. Although they did just draft Riley Reiff in the first round last year, rumor has it that they’re thinking about moving him to guard. The Lions can’t pass up the opportunity to put an end to their O-Line woes. They take Eric Fisher here to help protect Matthew Stafford so that he can get the ball to Calvin Johnson next season.

6. New Orleans Saints (Trade with Browns) – Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah – The Saints trade up to fill that missing piece at NT in their new 3-4 defense with Utah’s defensive standout, Star Lotulelei. The Saints currently do not have a true nose tackle and need someone who can come in and immediately make an impact. Lotulelei may do this and more, he can be the guy to anchor New Orleans’ brand new defensive scheme next season.

7. Arizona Cardinals – Lane Johnson – T, Oklahoma - The Cardinals decide to sit out a year on drafting a QB by pulling the trigger on Carson Palmer. They now have a QB worthy of getting Fitzgerald the ball. They still need major help blocking for him. When every single player in the Cardinals back field got injured at some point last season, it’s a sign you go offensive tackle in the 1st. Lane Johnson is one of the most athletic in this class and give Carson Palmer that much needed protection this season.

8. Buffalo Bills – Cordarralle Patterson – WR, Tennessee – The Bills decide to give Kolb a shot rather than go for Geno. They bank on the best looking WR in the draft in Cordarrelle Patterson. This way, when they do sign their next franchise QB, he’ll already have his weapons to throw to.

9. New York Jets – Ezekiel Ansah, OLB/DE, BYU – The Jets have so many choices at #9, but with Ziggy Ansah and Dion Jordan gone and Eric Fisher falling, the smartest move is to pull the trigger on a lineman many considered to be worthy of a #1 overall pick. A quintessential step in the rebuilding of the Jets. Eric Fisher will immediately bring their below average offensive line to one of the best in the NFL with Mangold and Ferguson at center and left tackle. Fisher could play right and eventually replace Ferguson at left, while Ducasse, Howard, Colon and possibly a later round pick can rotate at guard. Now whoever wins the battle at QB, will have time to relax and throw the ball and Mike Goodson whose always been great at finding the right holes can have his best NFL season yet.

10. Tennessee Titans – Chance Warmack, G, Alabama – The Titans whose greatest need may be at Guard have the opportunity to sign the best guard in the draft and a surefire starter. He’ll give Chris Johnson the help he’s been complaining about not having in the run game and can help Jake Locker stay off the injury reserve list immediately.

With the Draft coming up on April 25th – April 27th, college athletes across the country are prepping themselves for their shot at becoming the next big thing in the National Football League. Being a former offensive lineman myself, I know how important this position is. Quick feet, strength, awareness and excellent framework are keys when it comes to protecting your quarterback(s) and or running-back(s). Of course on-top of all that, knowing your snap count so your coaches won’t tear into you when you come off the field, also helps. Teams in the NFL are always looking to improve their front line on offense, some more than others. Yes, Chicago Bears, I am hinting at you. So here is my Top 5 prospects for this upcoming draft. Let’s start off with the first.

Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M (6-6 310 lbs) – Projected to be a Top 10 pick in the draft, Joeckel has shown he can handle the best of the best. He has awesome pass rushing protection and can do decent work when it comes to run blocking. I don’t see this man having a problem when he gets the hang of the NFL’s weight lifting program and gets adjusted. This kid reminds me of a younger Jake Long.

Chance Warmack, G, Alabama (6-3 320 lbs) – This man is a straight up monster. The Senior Guard did excellent when it come to the running game. Warmack has shown some struggles in games but adjusted well and bounced back to dominate whoever was across from him. Pass blocking can be improved when he reaches the league. He is projected to be in the Top 25. I wonder if he will get a call from Philadelphia.

Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan (6-7 305 lbs) – When it comes to quick foot work, this man has exactly that. He has shown his ability to drop back into pass coverage and cut off speedy pass rushers and win his blocks. This kid is projected to go sometime in the 1st round, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is picked within the Top 5-10 as well. Whoever passes on him will be insane. The good thing about this kid, is he can afford to add more muscle mass to his frame. When that happens, good luck trying to get by him.

Dallas Thomas, G/OT, Tennessee (6-5 308 lbs) – A man who was moved to left guard, is an excellent pass and run blocker. He is a part of a team who only allowed 18 sacks an entire season (around 1.5 per game) was the thirst lowest in the SEC. Projected to be a late 1st round or early 2nd round pick. I would love to see the Chicago Bears draft this young man.

Jonathan Cooper, G, North Carolina (6-3 295 lbs) - A good pass and run blocker who could keep options open with Offensive Linemen coaches. He recorded double digit knockdown blocks in 9 of 12 games this season. Helping the running game of North Carolina, which averaged 193.8 rushing yards a game their highest since 1994. Cooper is quick and athletic so being swapped between Guard and Center shouldn’t be a problem for him or whoever decides to draft him. I see him going in the 1st round, possibly the best guard available.
