As Tim Tebow sits on the open free market and speculation about which team will sign Skip Bayless’s favorite quarterback grows. And in an unprecedented move teams come out and deny any interest in a particular player. The Jacksonville Jaguars general manager said they were not interested in the hometown hero.

Now the Cleveland Browns are announcing their lack of interest.

“I think Tim’s a great kid, I really do,” general manager Michael Lombardi said, via The Chronicle-Telegram. “Unfortunately, Tim has to get somewhere where he can develop his skills as a passer. Because in the NFL, it’s a passing league. You’ve got to be able to throw, so Tim’s got to be able to develop that skill.

“And when you commit to Tim, like Denver did the last eight games of the season when Tim was playing, you’re committing to that whole style of play. It’s all or nothing and that becomes very difficult and that’s kind of not the vision of where we’re headed.”

The problem is that Tebow is a victim of his own media hype machine. Any team that brings him on, no matter what their intentions are, falls under the scrutiny of Tebowmania. Look at what happened with the New York Jets, it’s clear Tebow was a distraction whether they admit it or not. And that attention, which is negative, might not balance out the leadership qualities he brings to the table.

The Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell has insisted that they aren’t considering adding Tim Tebow. Despite Jacksonville Jaguars fans clamoring for Tebowmania, which has even led them to petition President Barack Obama.

“We’re looking for the best players obviously for us that help us win,” Khan said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “How many players are in the NFL? I would assume it’s 90 [times] 32 at this point, right? So, ballpark about 3,000 players, correct? Why one player? . . . . Why do you ask about one player? What about the other 2,999?

“Because I’m fascinated with that.”

Tim Tebow grew up in the Jacksonville area, then led the home state and nearby University of Florida Gators to 2 BCS National Championships while winning himself a Heisman Trophy and legend status.

While signing Tebow wouldn’t be a commitment to winning immediately it could have a positive impact on the organization. He would likely increase revenue for the organization, which could make them players in free agency possibly. He could do all of this while leading the team to top 10 NFL draft picks potentially, which could set them up to win in the future.

Worst case scenario he repeats what he did in Denver and leads the team to the playoffs. Then it looks genius.

“I don’t think it’s right for me to go and say – forget about a specific player – which of the 3000 players in the league they ought to have and not have,” Khan added. “So it’s for them [to decide].”

Tim Tebow’s future with the NFL is uncertain since his release from the New York Jets. Many think his lack of mechanics and poor throwing motion and slow release has him destined to play football outside the NFL. Of course if he were willing to change his position he might still be able to find a home.

His hometown team’s fans though want him to get a shot. The Jaguars general manager David Caldwell has resisted the pressure so far, and the fans are going over his head sort of. They’re petitioning the White House to force the Jaguars to sign Tim Tebow.

“Call NFL Jacksonville Jaguars GM David Caldwell and tell him to stop ignoring the Jaguars fans and sign Tim Tebow!”

“If the Jaguars sign & START Tebow,” the petition continues, “home games will be sold out, sales will spike, the team will win and the fans will be happy.”

That seems to be fairly reasonable logic. NFL teams are businesses and making money should be the goal. He grew up in Florida, won a Heisman Trophy at a state school and a couple BCS National Championships.

But what this says is that the Jaguars are committed to getting to better and are trying to win.

To bring in Tebow purely would be to make money and not be competitive. But it’d be a great way to make money and keep racking up top 10 draft picks at the same time. That could be the winning recipe.

After drafting Greg McElroy out of the University of Alabama, it looked as if the Jets found a back up quarterback who could potentially win the starting job in the future and lead this team to glory. McElroy who played 3 years of football in Alabama, lead the Crimson Tide to a 14-0 season which included the SEC Championship and BCS National Championship.

He was drafted in the 7th round of the 2011 draft #208 overall, but he didn’t see regular season play until last season, when Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow seemed to have trouble getting things together. He played 2 games for the Jets, completing 19 of 31 attempts, 214 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

In March, the New York Jets have announced that they have agree’d to terms with veteran David Garrard, which would make him the 5th quarterback on the Jets roster, behing Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow (at the time), Greg McElroy, and the youngest son of New York Giant’s great Phil Simms, Matt Simms. Last season around the same time he agree’d with the Jets this off season, he agree’d with the Miami Dolphins in hopes to winning the starting position that now belongs to Ryan Tannehill. He ended up undergoing arthroscopic surgery and missed all 4 pre-season games and was released at the very beginning of the season.

Now with Tim Tebow out of the picture and looking for employment in this league or this sport, enter Geno Smith. Smith who was hoping to be selected in the 1st round of the draft, slipped all the way to the #39 pick in the 2nd round. His numbers dropped during the 2nd half of the season in West Virginia during his Senior year, but overall he had an amazing 3 out of 4 seasons.

With bringing in Geno Smith, it looks like the front office of this franchise are slowly starting to give up on Mark Sanchez. Posting a 2nd career low in yards per game (in 4 seasons) with 192, had the lowest touchdown percentage of his career of only 2.9% after throwing 13 touchdowns, had a 4.8% in 2011 where he threw for 26, both seasons matching interceptions at 18. Everybody remembers his infamous ‘butt fumble’, where he ran into his own offensive lineman against the New England Patriots, which resulted in a fumble recovery that was returned for a 32 yard touchdown by safety Steve Gregory.

So it is safe to say with the recent moves by the New York Jets, the quarterback position is up for grabs and as of right now, there are 5 guys on this roster who are going to fight for #1 spot on the depth chart. Whoever that may be, will start the season against Darrelle Revis and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home.

Mark Sanchez is aware of the competition in New York and is pretty excited about the idea of having to fight for his starting position which has been his since he was drafted.

Sanchez was asked if he expected to be the start this year, replying with

“Sure, no doubt. Of course, you gotta own it and compete your butt off to keep it.”

He mentioned he was “thrilled” to have competition going into training camp saying

“They drafted a quarterback, let’s compete.”

He also mentioned in an interview that he spoke with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg before and after they drafted Geno Smith.

It will be interesting to see how things work out in New York and I’m sure just like last season when the Jets traded for quarterback Tim Tebow, all eyes will be directly on this team through out the preseason. Right now, I honestly think Geno Smith is the heavy favorite to win this position.

Mandatory Credit: John Munson/THE STAR-LEDGER via USA TODAY Sports

Well, Tim Tebow’s time with the New York Jets didn’t last long, as it was announced earlier that the New York Jets decided to release Tim Tebow.

Now we all know Tim Tebow’s story and what he did in Denver, after those come backs and leading them back to the playoffs, was traded by the Denver Broncos out of no where, to the New York Jets. Now when I seen this as a headline on ESPN, I scratched my head, not really understanding why the Jets traded for Tebow. I understood the Broncos wanting to shop Tebow, knowing they would take a shot at bringing in Peyton Manning, bringing him in before they actually traded him.

With the draft being over and teams picking up extra pieces they need, in Tebow’s case, quarterbacks, I am not sure if too many teams will be interested in bringing him in unless they look to use him the same way the Jets did. Not taking anything away form Tebow, but New York wasn’t exactly the greatest place for him to go. He definitely has a lot of potential, he needs to be surrounded by the right coaching staff, at the right time, for the opportunity he is looking for, to be a starting quarterback in the National Football League, once again.

Where that coaching staff is and when? Who knows, like I said, the draft just ended and next years draft is going to have some decent talent as far as the quarterback position is concerned.

In 3 seasons in the National Football League, he has thrown 17 touchdowns against 9 interceptions, 2,422 passing yards, 989 rushing yards and lead the Denver Broncos to their first AFC West title and playoff win since 2005. In his only season with the New York Jets, behind Mark Sanchez he only completed 8-6 passes for 39 yards, with 102 rushing yards on 32 attempts. Now with all this being said, let’s get this list started and see where he could possibly end up, if he doesn’t consider a position change.

I may get some heat for this list, but, here we go.

Jacksonville Jaguars - They denied reports of bringing in Tim Tebow a few months back, but honestly, do you actually think they would stand by it? Tebow played college ball in Florida, for all of you who didn’t know and the quarterback situation in Jacksonville isn’t all that great either. The options this team could have with Tebow and that young offense could be endless, it may not be the cleanest and high scoring offense they would want, but right now the Jaguars only have 2 active quarterbacks on their roster with Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne. A handful of positions were address in the draft and the quarterback position was not one of those issues. So throw out a little bit of money in Tebow’s direction and boost ticket sales, maybe even get a win or two if he so happens to start a game or two if something were to happen to Gabbert or Henne.

San Diego Chargers - I am not completely sure if Philip Rivers is the franchise quarterback that San Diego is looking for, but I know Tim Tebow isn’t, but it wouldn’t hurt to have him as an option. Tebow can be seen as somewhat of a leader, guys around the league do respect him and right now the Chargers only have 3 quarterbacks on the roster, not taking one in this years draft. It could be a long stretch but, you could let Tebow compete for the #2 or #3 job if they decide not to bring in a undrafted free agent rookie anytime soon.

Arizona Cardinals - John Skelton left to the Cincinnati Bengals so right now their quarterback situation looks like the following, Carson Palmer, Drew Stanton, Brian Hoyer. Last season they ran through quarterbacks like new born babies run through diapers, it was ridiculous, a lot had to do with their offensive line but still, that’s crazy. I’m not saying Tebow could be a game changer in Arizona, but he could add depth and give this team who is currently rebuilding on offense, some new options to try out.

Arena Football League - Now I know what you are thinking, ‘David, the Arena Football League has nothing to do with NFL Free Agency.’ Actually it sorta does, you see, there has been players bouncing back and forth through the years between the Arena Football League, National Football League and Canadian Football League. Kurt Warner, Michael Bishop, Shaun King, Tommy Maddox, Jared Lorenzen, Jim Kubiak, Jordan Palmer (Carson’s little brother), all played in the National Football League and Arena Football League at some point in their career. Some of these guys had great careers in the National Football League, others found success in the Arena Football League after interest in them dropped from the NFL. If nobody picks up Tim Tebow in the National Football League, he will definitely end up in the Arena Football League or Canadian Football League, which leads me to our next destination.

Canadian Football League - Just like the Arena Football League, greats from this sport have swapped from league to league through out the years. Another list of greats coming/going to Canada are Warren Moon, Doug Flutie, Jeff Garcia (backed up Flutie in Calgary in ’94), Joe Theisman, and Dieter Brock. Not that big of a list, but you know, they were still quarterbacks and found success in both league. But it just shows, if you can’t find your rhythm in one place, you could always find it in another and possibly get people interested in you again in another league. It has worked for a handful of guys and they went on to be one of the greatest players to ever throw a pig skin.

We will see what happens to Tim Tebow but the Arena Football and Canadian League have to be the best option for him. He really doesn’t have a place to go, poor Tebow.

The New York Jets have released quarterback Tim Tebow. In a rare move this offseason for the Jets, they actually let a quarterback go. They at one point had accumulated six different quarterbacks on their roster.

They had Mark Sanchez and Greg McElroy on their roster before adding David Garrard and then drafting Geno Smith. They also had a guy named Matt Sims.

“We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said in a release. “Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped. Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward.”

By waiting till after the draft it certainly seems that the New York Jets were trying to make a trade. But the market seems to be avoiding Tim Tebow at all costs.

What makes this all the more confusing is that by drafting Geno Smith you put the Jets in almost the same position next year as you did last year when you traded for Tim Tebow.

Geno Smith comes in with less fanfare and pandemonium than Tebow did. He hadn’t let a NFL franchise on a tremendously emotional ride from bottom of the league to a playoff win. But it’s essentially the same two quarterbacks system with Geno Smith filling the vacant mobile quarterback role that Tebow held. But he was projected by some to be the number one overall pick, that puts him in the hype realm with Tebow.

And not to mention they have Garrard there. Someone is getting cut.

Former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia has spent the offseason tutoring New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez. The former first round draft pick, Sanchez, is coming of a horrendous season after leading the Jets to two AFC Championship games. The Jets brought in Tim Tebow last offseason. Some felt the move was to push Mark Sanchez, some thought it was purely a publicity stunt.

The latter became more obviously true as the season unfolded. When Mark Sanchez was benched they gave Greg McElroy the nod instead of Tebow.

“If there’s going to be competition at the quarterback position, it’s not going to come from Tim Tebow,” Garcia said, via ESPN NY. “Having Tebow there (last season) just became a distraction, more of a circus show.”

“It’s their decision, but from an outsider looking in, having Tebow there doesn’t bring anything positive. It just brings distraction. For Mark, the main competition is going to be David Garrard and Greg McElroy.”

What happened last season validates Garcia’s point. And even odder is the fact that Tim Tebow plans to attend Jets’ voluntary workouts despite not being a part of the teams 2013 plans. Can you say awkward?

If I were Tim Tebow though, I’d absolutely show up and take advantage of NFL facilities and continue to train if I was serious about my NFL career. The Jets though seem determined to trade him despite no team expressing any interest at all, at least not publicly.

But when the Jets added yet another quarterback in Garrard an open quarterback competition was declared. But bringing in Tebow to create the illusion of one was unnecessary according to Garcia.

“When you’re a quarterback, you don’t need artificial competition,” Garcia said. “And it’s not fair to Tim to put him through all that. If there’s a place for Tim that gives him a chance to be a contributor in an offense with another team, let him go be that guy.”

The Darrelle Revis saga has a new chapter. Now head coach Rex Ryan has spoke out and given his two cents on the “will Revis be traded” saga. Only, his claims go against the rest of the front office.

“I know for a fact that we’re not actively trying to trade Darrelle Revis. But if somebody calls, you listen,” Ryan said, via the New York Post’s Bart Hubbuch.

So that statement from the Jets’ head coach makes it seem as if they’re planning on having Revis on their roster next season. Many had suspected that they would be getting rid of him before the draft.

Rex Ryan though clearly appears to be just blowing smoke up everyone’s you know whats. Look at what he said about Tim Tebow.

Bart Hubbuch quotes Rex as saying Tebow “will be part of the competition.”

But even Rex says he doesn’t know what the front office is doing, and why certain moves like trading Revis and cutting Tim Tebow haven’t happened yet.

“I’m not out of the loop [on roster decisions now]. Ultimately, though, my only job is to coach the football team,” Rex said.

But Jets fans don’t stress. He won’t guarantee a Super Bowl, but his squad will be ready for 2013.

“We’re going to bring it. We are going to bring it. I know what it takes, and I promise you, my guys are going to be ready,” Rex said.

The New York Jets don’t know what to do with Tim Tebow. If they don’t know what to do with Darrelle Revis, than could you really expect them to figure out how to get out of the Tebowmania circus?

“We’ll see what the offseason (brings),” Jets owner Woody Johnson said Sunday.

But the offseason hasn’t brought anything in regards to Tim Tebow. The Jets seem to be clinging to hope that they can trade Tebow when that market is most likely non-existant. It would take a team desperate for a quarterback that didn’t address that need in the draft possibly to get it done.

But according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily news, Woody Johnson says they’re exploring all possibilities. The only possibility though seems obvious, release him.

Rex Ryan doesn’t trust Tim Tebow to motivate or push Mark Sanchez. They just brought in David Garrard to fill that role and possibly compete for the starting job.

Tebow is set to earn $2.6 million this year, and the Jets can’t afford to keep him around. The only reason I think they hold on to him through April is to see if a trade market emerges after the draft.

Woody Johnson on Tim Tebow: “We’re looking at all possibilities with him. We’ll see what the offseason (brings).” #nyj

Happy 316 day! It’s kinda like Pi Day on 314, but this is for Tim Tebow.

It seems like a lifetime ago that Tim Tebow dropped 316 yards against Pittsburgh to lead the Broncos to a home playoff win vs. a Super-Bowl contender from the AFC north (something Peyton Manning fell short of doing in his first year in Denver). Tebow’s amazing feat of upsetting the heavily favored Steelers in the playoffs not only saw the coincendece of his 316 yards passing matching his infamous favorite bible verse, John 3:16, but he also averaged 31.6 yards per completion (and the Steelers time of possesion was 31 minutes, 6 seconds and the overtime game drew a 31.6 TV rating). So March 16 seems like a good point in the offseason to take a look at a guy who should be finding a new NFL home.

After being shipped off to the Jets to not start a single game at QB in New York even though Mark Sanchez struggled (and was benched), Tebow has become expendable and on the brink of slipping out of NFL relevance and our national consciousness and into the anonymous world of clipboard carrying or perhaps the Canadian Football League.

Now his name only comes up in relation to if/when he’s cut from a Jets team that will have Sanchez competing with the likes of David Garrard and possibly other journeyman castoffs from the Kevin Kolb division. Occasionally someone mentions the idea of his returning to North Florida to “push” Jacksonville QB Blaine Gabbert, or perhaps in a defined backup roll on some other team with an entrenched starter.

These stories never go anywhere, much like his passes, they just sail away or are driven into the ground by those obsessed with talking about Tebow.

The obvious angle never talked about enough is: what about Tebow finally switching positions to some form of H-Back, a FB/TE Slash who can make plays in short-yardage or goal line situations? I guess no analysts will talk about it until Tebow himself indicates, at least privately if not publicly, that he’s ready and willing to switch positions. Even for those of us who discount him as a legitimate option to compete for a starting QB spot, there should still be some consideration and interest in him as a football player, should he finally relent to a change.

Let’s set aside all the alleged intangibles like “he’s a winner” and leadership (though they may also be true). He’s a tough, smart runner. Remember one of the games that put him on the map with Denver was that winning drive at the end against the Jets when he took every snap with an empty backfield, barely threw any passes, and just ran the ball every play down the field vs. an elite defense that knew he was running the ball every time.

He would still be a situational guy, but in a world of 2-TE offenses and pistol formations and zone read option schemes, when fewer teams even carry a true Fullback on their rosters any more, Tebow is worth having from a purely on-the-field standpoint. Even though he’s not much of a threat as a passer, he doesn’t need to be. I wouldn’t ask him to be RGIII or Colin Kaepernick or Russell Wilson, but I would put him next to a guy like that. Hand it off to Tebow straight up the middle as the defense is forced to respect the outside speed of the QB. Direct snap it to Tebow and let him hand off to Percy Harvin while the defense is busy wondering what’s coming next. Put him in as a blocking back in a goal-line situation and give him the quick handoff as the upback, or have him stand next to the QB in shotgun/passing formations in the redzone so defenses will have to respect the delayed draw.

In today’s changing NFL offenses, a versatile player like Tebow (with all his intangibles and personal drive) should be a valuable asset to any team. The “Tebow Circus” only comes to town if he’s brought in as a QB. Signing him strictly as some sort of utility running back would eliminate any threat of a QB controversy (even in a place like Jacksonville).

If Tebow really is the winner and selfless team guy he claims to be, and if he wants to use the platform of professional sports celebrity to promote his faith-based charities or whatever his other pursuits may be off the field, then he’d be best served by instructing his agent to tell teams around the league that Tebow is ready and willing to play any role.

John 3:16 makes reference to a “begotten son” but if Tebow isn’t willing to change positions in the NFL, he become a forgotten one.
