Travis Kelce will get more snaps, as Andy Reid admits mistake

The Kansas City Chiefs fell flat in the opener against the Tennessee Titans, as it as a disappointing day for the entire team that only got worse when it was announced that key defensive starters Derrick Johnson (one of the best in the business) and Mike DeVito will miss the remainder of the season. Today, the coaching staff is coming under fire for a variety of reasons, but the biggest is the fact that they only gave the unquestioned top dog of their offense just seven carries. Reid has admitted that he should have given Jamaal Charles, rookie edge rusher Dee Ford, and now budding tight end Travis Kelce more reps in yesterday’s loss.

  • According to the Kansas City Star’s Terez A. Paylor, Reid stated that Kelce is “capable” of receiving more than 18 snaps in a game, and that seemingly clouded statement is a clear, “OK, I f’d up on not playing him enough, too,” from Reid. I love how accountable the Chiefs head man is, but it’s going to take a lot more than accountability to rectify those wrongs; he has to play these guys more.

Kelce still caught three passes on five targets for nearly 50 yards despite logging only around 20 snaps, so you can only imagine what he would do with more reps. It’s asinine how little the Chiefs used Charles and Kelce, especially given Dwayne Bowe’s suspension. It’s almost as if Reid did whatever he could to try to lose and make Alex Smith and the Chiefs offense look at incompetent as possible behind what can only be described as a work-in-progress offensive line that desperately needs to gel and improve. Kelce is a truly special “move” TE, and he can form an ideal duo with Anthony Fasano; this is a guy who definitely needs to see double the amount of targets he got against Tennessee.
