6. Shaun Alexander, 2005

Finally we’ve got to the first running back on this list. That’s right, Shaun Alexander won the AP MVP in 2005. I honestly can’t decide if it seems like him winning the award was a very long time ago or if it seems like it happened just a few years ago. Either way, his 2005 season was good enough to land him in the No. 6 slot on this ranking and it was a truly magical season in Seattle. He was the first running back to win the award since Marshall Faulk took it home in 2000.

In 2005, Alexander ran for 1,880 and a whopping 27 touchdowns. Those numbers read like video game statistics and the Seattle Seahawks back clearly deserved the MVP award that year. Although he added just 78 yards and one touchdown through the air in 2005. Not to mention, his 5.1 yards per carry–although impressive–is what keeps him from being higher on this list (you will see what other runners posted on future slides).

Alexander posted one of the biggest seasons in NFL history on the ground in 2005 and he will be remembered, in the Pacific Northwest, for quite some time. This season was incredible, although five AP MVP winners have topped what he did ten years ago.
