1) Starting quarterbacks don’t oversleep
Seriously, did anyone come off looking worse on last night’s show than Ryan Mallett? We initially see an extended version of the scene where Bill O’Brien names Brian Hoyer the starting quarterback. Obviously unhappy with the decision, Mallett quickly leaves the room without acknowledging Hoyer.
The worst moment for Mallett, however, comes midway through the episode. With reports circulating that Mallett missed practice because he overslept, the camera picks up OB telling a team official to stop trying to call him, citing that Mallett is 27 years old and implying that he shouldn’t need a baby sitter. He even tells the security manager who was on his way to wake Mallett to turn around and come back.
Look, everyone is human, and we all make mistakes. And as Mallett himself admits, the timing couldn’t be worse for him. But Tom Brady doesn’t oversleep. Peyton Manning doesn’t oversleep. Aaron Rodgers doesn’t oversleep. And, perhaps most relevant to Mallett, Hoyer doesn’t oversleep. And it’s this consistency that made Hoyer – not Mallett – the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans.
