With an explosive first step and an aggressive, attacking style of play, Will Sutton has been impressive on the Bears’ defensive line at times this season. The 2014 third round pick is a relatively valuable commodity who could certainly help a handful of teams throughout the NFL.

However, his value to the Bears is limited. Sutton is a traditional three-technique defensive lineman who was born to play in a 4-3 defense. He has obvious quickness, impressive strength and easy athleticism that allows him to make plays in the backfield as both a pass rusher and against the run.

He was a perfect fit for the Bears’ old defensive scheme which is why the team selected him in the third round. Looking back, taking Sutton seemed to be one of the only successful picks that Emery made in his tenure. Unfortunately, his style of play is not a great fit for a defensive lineman in Vic Fangio’s 3-4 defense.

Fangio is looking for his defensive lineman to eat up space and blocks to allow his linebackers to make plays. 3-4 defensive lineman are not typically asked to knife through the line of scrimmage and make plays in the backfield, and that is what Sutton does best.

I’m sure the Bears could carve out a role for Sutton on their defense, but his value would be much higher to a team who runs a traditional 4-3 defense. In fact, Sutton is a legitimate talent. The Bears could possibly receive similar compensation to the draft pick they spent on him.

Potential Fits: Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks.
