Los Angeles Rams Preseason: 3 Takeaways vs Chargers
1. The Rams coaching staff doesn’t trust its quarterbacks (nor should it)
Talking about that progress from Jared Goff…or not. The team had high hopes for Goff to build on his 16-for-20 performance against the Raiders for 160 yards, one touchdown and 17 points in three drives. On Saturday, however, Goff looked more like the 2016 vision after starting out hot.
He led the Rams to the Chargers 7-yard line on his opening drive. But on third down, Goff spent too much time looking for a receiver to get open in the end zone. He failed to sense Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa’s presence. Bosa stripped Goff of the ball. Ingram picked it up and ran 76 yards for the touchdown.
Goff also failed to sense the Raiders’ Khalil Mack on a sack last week, which he needs to iron out before the season opener.
After the fumble, Goff’s confidence seemed to drop dramatically. On the Rams’ next possession, Goff badly floated a ball well over Sammy Watkins’ head, and the Chargers’ Jason Verrett intercepted. McVay then called eight-straight running plays to open the Rams’ next series. Goff badly missed on an out route to Tyler Higbee on the next play.
Goff finished 5-of-8 for 53 yards with the interception and fumble. Mannion entered the game with four-straight completions. Then, he went cold to start the third quarter before regaining confidence as his blocking kept him upright.

There is no controversy over who should be the starter entering the season. But the Rams probably would be feeling a lot better if the latest Goff progress report actually showed some progress.
