New York Jets: 7 Top options in 2018 NFL Free Agency
2. Trumaine Johnson, CB
At 6-1, 205 pounds, Trumaine Johnson is the big corner he Jets need in their system. He’s a long and physical corner, and adding him to the back-end of the defense will only help the pass rush.
Over the last three seasons Johnson has gotten his hands on 51 passes (41 passes defended and 10 interceptions). He has also turned a turnover into points in three of his last four seasons. He’s been at least partly responsible for 21 turnovers in his career with 18 career interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
If you can live with the occasional lapses in play, Johnson is the guy. He’s the shutdown corner the Jets need for their defense to thrive. The pass rush was an issue for the Jets, but so was the coverage, and they go hand in hand. The Eagles were a top five pass rush and coverage team in 2017.
The Jets defense can’t perform at their peak without a shutdown corner like Johnson. If the Jets combine his talents with another in the draft, the could have a dangerous secondary, along with Marcus Maye and Jamal Adams. The Jets would become a tough team to throw on, even if the pass rush can’t get home.
