New England Patriots: Securing future, Super Bowl return with 2018 NFL Draft
Build a wall for Brady and beyond
No matter who the Patriots have sitting behind Tom Brady, it’s safe to say they’ll be playing quarterback for the Pats at some point — whether it’s this year or before the end of their rookie contract. So, the Patriots have to get better along the offensive line.
Nate Solder left for greener pasture (in the form of money) and leaves a huge hole at left tackle. The interior of the line can stand to get better as well, so that they can open up holes for a power back like Jeremy Hill. Thus, an upgrade at guard is a necessity.
The Pats line has gotten by in large part due to Tom Brady’s football intellect, quick release, and ability to feel pressure. However, the unsung hero is the 70 years young offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia, who has been coaching since 1970. The Pats can’t expect Scarnecchia to be around the next five years, so getting guys that have a high ceiling instead of overachievers could and probably should be an option for the Pats within the first three rounds.
Next: 2018 NFL Mock Draft: 10 Big trades create chaos
The Patriots often look like a team on the brink of falling off, they never seem to have that big star. When they do, he often ends up being trade bait and the next-man-up moniker becomes more than a saying. As the draft approaches, the Pats have looked like a team that is without major holes because they have made the right moves, albeit quietly. This draft is ideally suited for the Pats to continue their winning ways and lock down a successor for Tom Brady.
