4. How quickly can Adam Shaheen adjust to a new offense?

Adam Shaheen was a surprise second-round pick out of Ashland. He is huge (6-6, 278 pounds) and athletic. At Ashland, he earned the nickname “Baby Gronk” because of his size and his catching ability.

Shaheen is known for his route running and great hands. In his rookie season, however, he spent most of his time blocking than making catches. He made just 12 catches for 127 yards. A quarter of his catches (3) resulted in touchdowns.

Now, going into his second season, Shaheen needs to learn a new offense. This one, though, is more suited for his talents. Nagy likes to use tight ends in his offense. Look at Travis Kelce in Kansas City. Under Nagy, who was the offensive coordinator at the time, Kelce amassed 1,038 receiving yards and a career-high eight touchdowns.

The main tight end appears to be newcomer Trey Burton. He’ll probably get a majority of targets. However, if Shaheen picks the offense up quickly and plays well, that gives the Bears a very good one-two punch, much like the New England Patriots had with Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

Much like most players on offense, Shaheen was woefully underused. Fox doesn’t like using rookies much, especially in key situations. There were times in some games where Shaheen was big in the offense but late in the game he was on the bench while the offense sputtered.

Giving Mitchell Trubisky multiple big targets helps in the red zone. With Robinson, Burton, and Shaheen, Trubisky has many more options this season than he had last season. That bodes well in terms of higher scoring for a team that ranked 29th in scoring in 2017.
