3. Mike White, Cooper Rush making their case for top backup spot

One must continue to keep a close eye on the battle for the top backup quarterback spot, and on Saturday night Mike White played well after starting quarterback Dak Prescott had played in the preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals. White finished his time of the game 8-of-16 for 76 yards.

Last week against the 49ers, Rush was the dominate quarterback with a 15-of-23 performance for 145 yards and one touchdown. In that same game against San Francisco, White finished 6-of-11 for 63 yards.

Speaking of Rush, in his playing time on Saturday against Cincinnati, he was 6-of-9 for 37 yards, letting the Cowboys know they do, in fact, have a solid quarterback battle for the right to be Prescott’s top backup option.

This preseason and training camp the battle for the backup quarterback position really draws attention, or at least it should be, for the reasoning all NFL teams are just one play away from having to have their top backup in a given game.

Hopefully, the Cowboys won’t need to have any quarterback other then Prescott in a game this upcoming season, but if they do they need to make sure they choose the correct player to play that role.

White and Rush should make their roster spot position the toughest decision about any player by the coaching staff moving forward. No matter who the Cowboys go with as the top backup quarterback, they seem to have a signal caller with potential and one who could help the team if ever called upon.
