6. Dave Toub, Special Team Coordinator, Kansas City Chiefs

Special teams coaches don’t get a lot of love when it comes to coaching searches. When you break it down, though, they should get a lot more attention than they do.

Even though, in today’s NFL, fans want an offensive specialist for head coach, and in the past it’s been defensive head coaches that have been successful, as a head coach you don’t specialize like you do as a coordinator. You have to be able to communicate with players on both sides of the ball. Special teams coordinators are the only assistant coaches that do that on a regular basis.

Toub has become a relatively hot name on some fans lists of desired coaches, and it makes sense. First of all, John Harbaugh has a special teams background, and he only has one losing season as head coach and a Super Bowl title. Secondly, according to Football Outsiders, the Chiefs have the second best special teams unit in the NFL — behind the Jets.

Relationships with players matter, and the special teams coordinator is the only coach that makes relationships with both offensive and defensive players. Toub should be given a real look, of the coaches with no head coaching experience.
