Cleveland Browns: 3 Moves team needs to make in 2019 offseason
Add a No. 2 Cornerback opposite of Denzel Ward
If the Browns elect to pass on an interior defensive lineman in Round 1 of the draft, it will almost certainly be for a cornerback. The Browns selected Ohio State product Denzel Ward fourth overall in last year’s draft, surprising many who thought Bradley Chubb was locked in for that pick. Ward had an excellent rookie season for the Browns and showed a tremendous amount of upside. He appears to be one of the next elite shutdown corners in the NFL.
Unfortunately for Browns fans, the corner play opposite of Ward was not as stellar. Their No. 2 corner, whoever it was given the time of season, struggled most of the year and was a fatal flaw of this defense. With two very good safeties in Jabrill Peppers and Damarious Randall and a stud corner in Ward, all this secondary is missing is a corner opposite of Ward.
Depending how the draft falls, it could be very tempting for the Browns to take someone like Deandre Baker, Greedy Williams or Byron Murphy if they fall to the Browns in Round 1. Adding any of these guys would give the Browns one of the best secondary’s in the league.
The Browns may wait and use one of their two Round 3 picks on someone like Kris Boyd from Texas. With some intriguing free agent cornerbacks like Ronald Darby and Bryce Callahan, the Browns best bet may be to heavily pursue one in free agency in order to use their draft picks in other areas. Regardless of how they plan to do it, adding another cornerback this offseason will remain a priority for what appears to be a new Cleveland Browns football team.
