Re-sign pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney

The former first overall pick in the 2014 draft didn’t get off to the most dominate start like many expected, but he has finally emerged into what most expected when he was selected by the Texans. Jadeveon Clowney is coming off of a career year, and at the perfect time. Clowney is set to hit the open market this offseason, and making sure he doesn’t leave Houston should be one of the Texans top priorities.

With back to back nine sack seasons, Clowney also added a forced fumble, three fumble recoveries and 16 tackles for a loss in 2018 to go along with his nine sacks. He formed one of the most lethal combos with teammate J.J. Watt this year and was a big reason for the Texans being ranked among the top three in fewest rushing yards allowed in 2018.

Clowney will join some very good pass rushers in what could be a dominate pass rushing free agent class. With Demarcus Lawrence, Frank Clark, Dee Ford and many others who could hit free agency, Clowney should be the top option for all NFL teams in this group. In order for the Texans to re-sign Clowney, they will have to pay him around $17 million a year, just about a quarter of their expected cap space.

Star edge defenders are hard to come by, which means the Texans would be crazy not to re-sign their former first round pick to a long term deal. Clowney has finally proved what he is worth to this defense, re-signing him would ensure the Texans defense stays among one of the best in the league.
