Ronald Darby, CB, Philadelphia Eagles

Yes, the Seahawks need a new starting cornerback. They got by last season filling the No. 2 role with surprisingly effective backups, but adding another top option across from Shaquill Griffin is the right way to go heading into 2019.

The problem is that the 2019 NFL free agency class is extremely weak at the cornerback position. Right now, the best option set to be available is Ronald Darby. While he’s far from a pushover in coverage, it’s not reassuring that he’s the top talent at his position this offseason.

Can Darby hold his own? Absolutely. Is he a sure thing who would immediately make the Seattle secondary significantly better? Not necessarily. Not only is he coming off a torn ACL, but he’s never been a lockdown cornerback. The worst part, though? Darby is going to cost far more than he should, simply because he’ll be the top cornerback on the market.

Signing Darby wouldn’t be the worst idea if he came with a reasonable price tag and wasn’t coming off a serious knee injury. Seeing as that’s the exact situation the former second-round pick is currently in, the Seahawks would be best to avoid falling into that trap.

Let another club make the mistake of signing him to an expensive deal that comes back to bite them.
