New York Giants: 7-Round 2019 mock draft after Odell Beckham Jr. trade
Round 5, Pick 142: Khalil Hodge, LB, Buffalo
At inside linebacker right now, the Giants have a less-than fearsome group of Alec Ogletree, B.J. Gooson and Tae Davis — yikes. Thus, New York uses the first of four selections in the fifth round to nab Khalil Hodge. Hodge was a tackling machine at Buffalo, notching 296 in his final two seasons. With great speed and instincts, though questions about his strength and level of competition, Hodge could be a Day 1 starter for Big Blue.
Round 5, Pick 143: Dontavius Russell, DT, Auburn
Last season, the Giants traded away Damon “Snacks” Harrison to the Detroit Lions. While their defensive front still looks quite solid by comparison to the rest of the defense, they could use a run-stopper on the defensive line, and Dontavius Russell fits the bill. While not much of an athlete or pass rusher, Russell has experience as a gap-clogger and great tackler while at Auburn. In the fifth round, he can be a nice rotational piece for New York.
Round 5, Pick 155: KeeSean Johnson, WR, Fresno State
Again, the Giants receiving corps is completely depleted without Beckham, so they look to get Rosen more weapons here with Fresno State’s KeeSean Johnson. He’s not quite the athlete players need to be to become a viable WR1 in the NFL, Johnson is a phenomenal route-runner that should be able to use his savvy to find success from the moment he enters the league. Given what New York currently has, that’s a big pick-up for them at this point in the draft.
Round 5, Pick 171: Malik Carney, EDGE, North Carolina
While Malik Carney is undersized as a hand-down pass rusher, a switch to playing as a 3-4 edge rusher may be beneficial to the athletic prospect out of North Carolina. He needs work and coaching in regards to his technique in rushing the passer, the upside and motor are there. He could contribute right away as a special teams player for the Giants, but could also give them more depth in a rotation off the edge.
